METALLIC FASTEN ER.
SPECIFICATION' forming part of Letters Patent No. 512,620, dated January 9, 1894. Application filed J' nly 10,1893. Serial No. 480,060. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Beit known that I, GEORGE. W. MoGILL, a citizen of the United States, residing lat Riverdale, New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Metallic Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to metallic fasteners particularly designed for fastening or securing papers, but useful for many other purposes; and the object of my invention is to improve the prior construction of metallic fasteners, and provideia novel, simple, and desirable capped fastener of the type having a duplex-pronged shank, the membersof which 11e contiguous, or are superimposed and are o f unequal length to facilitate their separation and spreading iiatly against the papers, articles, or pieces of material to be secured or bound. The object of myinvention is accomplished 1n the manner and by the means hereinafter described and claimed, reference being made to the accompanying drawings, in which- Flgure l is a plan view of one part of the duplex-pronged shank prior to bending its head portion laterally. Fig. 2 is a detail perspective view of the same, showing the head portion bent laterally. Fig. 3 is a detail plan View of the centrally depressed disk. Fig. 4 1s a detail perspective view, showing the duplex-pronged shank seated in the centrally depressed disk. Fig. 5 is a detail sectional View of one of the completed fasteners, taken on the line 5-5, Fig. 6. Fig'. 6 is a detail perspective view, looking at the under side of one of the fasteners. Fig.7 is a detail plan vlew, showing a modified construction of one of the prongs or members of the duplexpronged shank. In order to enable those skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will now describe the same in detail, referring to the drawings, wherein- The numerals l and 2 indicate the two prongs or members of the duplex-pronged fastener, each of which is made from ablank of the form illustrated in Fig. 1, whichvblank is preferably constructed with a pointed ex! tremity 3, anda semi-circular head portion 4 which proj ects'from each edge of the blank to form lateral shoulders 5. The semi-circular head portion 4 is bent laterally at right angles to the body of the blank, as shown in Fig. 2, and two of these blanks are superimposed, so that their main bodies lie contiguous to each other throughout their length, as shown in Fig. 5, so that the head portions 4 constitute an approximately circular head, Figs. 4 and 6, which is adapted to lie in a circular seat 6 formed at the center of a disk 7. The seat is provided by centrally'depre'ssing the center of the disk 7, and this centrally depressed part is provided with a single rectilinear slot 8 through which the two prongs or members 1 and 2 are adapted to pass for the purpose of placing the circular head formed by the semi-circular head portions 4 in the centrally depressed seat. The parts thus constructed are designed to be provided with a cap, not only for the purpose of ornamentation, but for the purpose of rigidly and permanently securing the duplex-pronged shank to the centrally depressed disk. The cap 9 is composed of a flat piece of sheet metal of circular form, and its margin or rim isturned around the periphery of the disk 7, and the whole is compressed or iiattened, so that the iianged portion 10 of the cap 9 lies flush with the under surface of the disk 7, as will be understood by reference to Fig. 5. By this construction a capped head for a duplex-pronged fastener isprovided, which is comparatively thin, but possesses strength, durability and efficiency, while the parts can be very rapidly produced by existing machinery, so that the cost of production is materially reduced.
The metallic fastener described possesses a -circular capped head, but obviously the outline 0fv this head may be variously modified by simply changing the'shape of the disk or plate 7 and cap 9.
In the modification illustrated by Figs. 7, 8, 9, and 10 the metallic duplex-pronged fastener is intended to possess an oval shaped head, and for this purpose the centrally de- IOO pressed plate 7 is oval shape or oblong, and the centrally depressed seat G is of a similar shape; While the rectilinear slot 8 extends transversely through the center of the eentrally depressed seat. The duplexpronged shank is formed from two blanks, one ot' which is illustrated in detail, Fig. 7, which blank is of substantially the same construction as described with reference to Fig. 1, with the exception that the head portion 4 differs in configuration to accommodate it to the oval shape of the centrally depressed seat 6, Fig. 8. The head portions of the two prongs or members are seated in the centrally depressed seat, by passing the prongs or shanks through the slot S, and subsequently the cap 9 is flanged upon the plate 7, as described with reference to Fig. 5. The free extremities of the shanks l and 2 may or may not be pointed, as described, but pointed extremities are preferred, in that they facilitate the passage of the shank through papers, articles, or pieces of material which are to be connected or bou nd together.
The prongs or members which compose the duplex-pronged shank are constructed of unequal length, so that one projects slightlybeyond the other to facilitate the separation of the prongs in spreading them apart upon the papers, articles, or pieces of material to be sccured.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is*- A metallic fastener, consisting of a duplexpronged shank having the members contiguous and each formed with a semi-circular laterally bent head portion, a disk having a centrally depressed seat provided with a single slot through which the contiguous members of the duplex-pronged shank pass for placing the circular head thereof in the depressed seat, and a cap having its margin or rim bent around the periphery ofthe disk and compressed so that the flanged part of the cap and the under surface ot' the disk are fiush, substantially as described.
