LACY M. NORAVOOD, OF SAVANNAH, GEORGIA.
ENVELOP-FASTENER.
Application filed July 29, 1907.
T 0 all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, LACY M. Nouwoon, a citizen of the lnited States, residing at Savannah, in the county of (hatham and State of Georgia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Envelop-Fasteners; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact ies ription of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in fasteners to be attached to envelops or for fastening the flap of a bag or other similar article.
The object of the invention is to prolong the life of an envelop by providing a fastener having plurality of revolving prongs to engage the eyelet in the envelop or other 'llap so that when one prong breaks a slight turn of the plate or center to which the prongs are attached will bring another prong into position to engage the eyelet.
With the above object in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings,*Figure 1 represents a top plan view of a portion of an envelop showing one form of this improved fastener applied thereto and with the flap of the envelop in open position; Fig. 2 represents a similar view with the flap closed and secured by the fastener; Fig. 3 represents a bottom plan view of the fastener detached; 4 represents a sectional view thereof; Fig. 5 is a bottom plan view' showing a slightly modified form of the means for attaching the fastener to the envelop; Fig. 6 is a longitudinal section of the fastener shown in Fig. 5 applied.
In the embodiment illustrated in Figs. 1. to 4, is shown a base plate or envelop-engag ing member 1, having a plurality of attaching clips 2, which are adapted to project through the body of the envelop and to be clenched on the inner side thereof. A flapengaging member is shown in the form of a plate 3, having a plurality of radially extending prongs, as 4, superposed and rev olubly mounted on the base plate 1, pref- Specification of Letters Patent.

erably by means of a rivet 5. This pronged plate may be stamped from sheet metal, preferably brass, and may be made of any desired size and with any number of prongs.
In the form shown in Figs. 5 and 6, the envelop engaging means comprises two plates (5 and 7, adapted to be placed one on each side of the body of the envelop, and a rivet passed through them and through the center of plate 3.
In the use of this invention, the base plate 1 with the pronged plate 3 revolubly mounted thereon is secured to the envelop near the top thereof, as shown, in Figs. 1 and 2, and one of the prongs, as 4, is passed through the eyelet S in the flap 9, of the envelop, as shown in Fig. 2, and two of the prongs disposed opposite to the one which passes through the eyelet are turned up'over the edge of the flap, whereby the latter is socurely held in place. When one of these prongs, as 4, becomes broken a slight turn of the plate 3 places another prong in position to engage the eyelet S, and in this way the life of the envelop is greatly prolonged.
I claim as my invention 1. An envelop fastener comprising a base plate, means for securing said plate to an envelop, a plate superposed and revolubly mounted on said base plate and having a multiplicity of radially extending clamping prongs.
2. An envelop fastener comprising means for engaging an envelop, and a plate revolubly mounted thereon and provided with a plurality of radially extending bendable clamping prongs.
3. The combination with an envelop having a flap provided with an eyelet, of a fastener comprising a baseplate secured to said envelop, adjacent said llap, and a plate revolubly mounted on said base plate and provided with a plurality of bendable prongs for engagement with said eyelet and with the edge of said flap.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing wit- IIGSSQS.
