UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIGE.
BENNET enE1G,oE NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN PAPER-FILES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 221,809, dated November 18, 1879 application tiled September 18, 1879. l
To all whom it mag/concern:
Be it known that I, BENNET GREIG, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Paper Files, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a file embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a crosssection thereof. Fig. 3 is a front view, partly in section. Fig. 4 shows a modification of the tiling-hooks.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts.
My invent-ion is especially adapted to tiles for holding wrapping-paper, paper bags, &c;
and it consists in the combination of a back plate, a series of iilinghooks attached to the base, the same being outwardly curved and pointed at their ends, and alongitudinallycurved guard-plate hinged at its inner longitudinal edge for overlapping and catching under the pointed ends of the hooks for retaining the papers in place and protecting the pointed ends of the hooks.
It also consists in combining, with the back plate, aseries of tiling-hooksthe shanks of which are formed with a top and two lateral or side cutting-edges for facilitating the tearing of the paper.
In the drawings, the letter A designates the back or foundation plate; B, the linghooks 5 C, the guard, and D 'the piercing-needle.
The back A is provided with suspensionears e, and the hooks B are secured thereto near its lower edge. These hooks B a-re bent outwardly or away from the back A at or near their ends, where they are sharp-pointed, so that the paper may be readily iiled thereon, and the shauks ofthe hooks are so shaped that they present a cutting-edge, f, Fig. 3, pointing in an upper direction.
A modiiication of this cutting-edge is shown in Fig. 4, where the hook has cutting-edges on The advantage gained by this arrangement is, that the paper is cut when drawn to one side, as well as when it is drawn downward.
By this cutting edge or edges the paper iiled on the hooks B is severed as it is torn from the hooks, and it is obvious that this operation is thereby materially facilitated.
The guard G is curved crosswise, and is hinged to a ledge, G, projecting from the back A in such a manner relatively to the iiling` hooks B that when moved to its normal position which is the position shown) the guard catches under the bent ends of the hooks. In this manner the ends of the hooks B are protected, while at the sametime the paper tiled thereon is prevented from shifting beyond the guard in an upper direction, so that it is not liableto come oft' the hooks.
The piercing-needle D is inclosed in a case, h, secured to the back A.
When a pile ot' paper is to be put on the hooks B it is desirable to pierce the paper to receive the hooks, so as to relieve the hooks of the strain incident to forcing the paper thereon. The piercing-needle D answers this purpose, and by making this needle a part ot' the le it is vnot liable to become misplaced or lost.
A greater or less number of thehooks B are used, according to the size ot' paper to be tiled 5 and, if desired, a spring may be combined with the guard C to keep the same in a lower position.
What l claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A paper-tile in which are combined a back plate, A, a series ot tiling-hooks, B, attached to the base, and outwardly-curved and pointed at their ends, and a longitudinally -curved guard-plate, G, hinged at its inner longitudinal edge for overlappin g and catching under the pointed ends of the hooks, for retaining the papers in place and protecting the pointed ends of the hooks, substantially as described.
2. The combination, with a back plate, A, of a series of tiling-hooks, B, the shanks ot' which are formed with a top and two lateral t or side cuttingedges, substantially as and for the purpose described.
ln testimony that l claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 12th day ot' September, 1879.
BENNET GREIG. [L s] Witnesses:
W. HAUEF, E. F. KASTENHUBER.
