- This invention relates to knobs, the object of the invention being to provide a knob from a single piece of sheet metal and avoid the expense and labor of spinning and also the expense and labor of casting the knobs from metal, these two methods being the ones commonly in use at the present time and both of which are objectionable on account of their expense, and it is with the object of producing a high-grade knob at a small cost that I have devised the present knob and its method of construction,which, broadly speaking, con sists in constructing a knob from a single piece of sheet metal by stamping or punching the same into the desired shape.

Be it known that 1, JAMES W. LAWSON, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of Allegheny, county of Allegheny, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Knob, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to knobs, the object of the invention being to provide a knob from a single piece of sheet metal and avoid the expense and labor of spinning and also the expense and labor of casting the knobs from metal, these two methods being the ones commonly in use at the present time and both of which are objectionable on account of their expense, and it is with the object of producing a high-grade knob at a small cost that I have devised the present knob and its method of construction,which, broadly speaking, con sists in constructing a knob from a single piece of sheet metal by stamping or punching the same into the desired shape.
With the objects before mentioned in view my invention consists in certain details of construction and novelties of combination, all of which will be fully described hereinafter, and pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings forminga part of this specification, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a knob constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a view showing the blank from which the said kn ob is constructed. Fig. 3 is a perspective view showing the first step in shaping the blank. Fig. 4 is a View showing the manner of completing the shaping of the knob and attaching the same to the shank.
Fig. 5 is a sectional view of the knob and shank constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 6 is a side elevation of a shank, and Fig. 7 is a sectional View on the line 7 7 of Fig. 6.
In carrying out my invention I employ a blank A,which is essentially star-shaped, consisting of a circular body A and the points or tongues A and A there being in the present instance eight points or tongues A and four points or tongues A and it will be noted that the points or tongues A are pointed at their outer ends, While the points or tongues A are flattened or made straight at their outer ends, as most clearly shown at A but it will Serial No. 709,295. also be noticed that all of the said tongues are of substantially the same length. These tongues are furthermore arranged upon radial lines, and instead of a sharp angle between two points I preferably make a curve A as most clearly shown in Fig. 2, for the purpose of making a neater joint when the blank is struck up into the form of a knob. The shank B is made of cast metal and is constructed with a cap or flange B and a shoulder B adjacent to and directly beneath the cap or flange B, and between the cap B and shoulder 13 the shank is made square in crosssection, as most clearly shown in Figs. 6 and 7, the said square portion B being somewhat less in diameter than the shank proper, while the cap or flange B and the collar B are both somewhat larger in diameter than the shank proper. This shank, it will of course be understood, is constructed with the usual square bore, the same as the shanks now in use. In order to shape the blank into the form of a knob and simultaneously attach the said knob rigidly to the shank, I first punch the said blank by means of suitable punching-dies into the form shown in Fig. 3. The shank is then seated in a cup-shaped shaping-die O, the bottom of said die being flush with the upper surface of the shoulder B The blank is then placed in the cup-shaped die points downward and a shaping and pressing die forced thereon, which action forces all of the points or arms into the proper shape, brings them together, making tight joints, and forces the ends into the space between the cap or flange and the collar of the shank, and it will be observed that the straight ends A of the points or tongues A contact with the square portion B of the shank, thereby preventing any possible rotation of the knob upon the shank, and it will be noticed that the space between the collar and flange is just large enough to accommodate the arms or points of the blank, thereby rendering a tight connection between the knob and shank when complete, and in order to securely fasten or secure the said joints I employ a small quantity of solder at this point and by the aid of heat securely connect the knob upon the shank.
It will thus be seen that I construct a knob from a single piece of sheet metal without the employment of a bead and also without the necessity of spinning. It will also be understood that I do notlimit myself to the exact details of construction or combination, but may change or vary the detailed parts considerably Without departing from the broad principles of my invention.
Having thus described myinvention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination with the knob formed of a single piece of sheet metal struck up from a star-shaped blank, one or more of the points or tongues being straight at the ends, of the shank, having the flange and collar, the space between the flange and collar being adapted to receive the points or tongues of the blank when shaped, the portion of the shank intermediate the flange and collar having one 01- more flat faces adapted to contact with the straight end or ends of the blank, substantially as shown and for the purpose described.
