I gl'nvcuh b UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES H. GRAHAM, 0F TORRINGTON, CONNECTICUT, ASS-IGNOR, BY MESNE ASSIGN- -MENTS, TO THE TORRINGTON COMPANY, OF TORR-INGTON, CONNECTICUT, A COR- PORATION OF CONNECTICUT.
I METHOD OF MAKING SPOKE-NIPPLES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 18, 1920.
Application filed August 27, 1917. Serial No. 188,433.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JAMns H. GRAHAM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Torrington, in the county of Litchfield, State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Methods of Making Spoke-Nipples, of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the figures of reference marked thereon.
My invention relates to improvements in a method of making spoke nipples.
The object of the invention is to provide a method of making nipples of this character from an angular bar in one operation. This is a great saving in both material and labor and at the same time produces a strong nipple having all features of those manu factured by numerous operations.
In the accompanying drawings:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of an octagon shaped bar or slug from which a nipple can be forged under my improved method.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of a nipple produced from the angular bar or slug under my improved method.
In the usual manufacture of nipples, a round bar is used of a length slightly greater than the completed article and of a diameter equal to the diameter of the body of the nipple and the head is forged thereon. A portion of the shank is then slabbed to form the octagon or angular portion necessary on the nipple. This manner of producing nipples requires a number of operations and there is also a considerable waste of material as the slabs are practically a total waste.
In my improved method I employ an octagon or angular shaped bar which is of a length considerably greater than that of the completed nipple as clearly shown in the expansion and therefore during the forging operation the portion is retained in its same shape and condition. The die beyond this point is round and of a diameter equal to the greatest diameter of the bar or slug and beyond the round portion a still larger portion is provided for producing the head. Pressure is applied to the end of the bar or slug which shortens the bar filling the round portion of the die and also the head portion is formed by causing the metal to flow outwardly and longitudinally thereof and thus a nipple of the shape shown having the angular portion 3, the round portion 4, and the headed portion 5 is produced by a single operation.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Lettors Patent, is
The process of forming a spoke nipple from a blank having an angular cross section substantially equal to the minimum angular cross section of the finished nipple consisting in maintaining substantially the original size and shape of a portion of said blank, while causing the residue of metal of said blank to flow outwardly and longitudinally thereof to form cylindrical and head portions of greater diameter than said blank.
In testimony whereof, I ailix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
JAMES H. GRAHAM. Witnesses:
