Description

UNITED STATES PATENT ()FFICE.
MANUFACTURE OF PLATED W.|RE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 268,687, dated December 5, 1882.
' Application filed August 23, 1882. (N model.)
To all 'whom it M my concern:
Be it known that I, KAUFMANN KAUFMANN, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful I mprovements in the Manufacture of Seamless Roll Plated Wire, of which the following is a specification.
In the manufacture of plated jewelry there has beennsed heretofore roll-plated wire, the filling of which is of base or composition metal, while the exterior layer or plating is gold or other fine metal. This plated wire was ob tained by forming a plate of composition metal and a layer of gold into a tube, which was soldered at the seam, filled by a composition core, and then drawn or rolled, with the interior filling, to the thickness of wire required for use. As the seam is always more or less visible, care has to be taken, in the manufacture of plated.
2 a jewelry from such wire, that the seam is always brought tothe inside of the links, or other parts made therefrom. This requires considerable care in manufacturing articles of jewelry therefrom, and has furthermore the disadvantage that bywear the seam becomes oxidized, so as to show the interior filling. My invention is designed to furnish an improved method of manufacturing drawn or roll-plated wire for jewelry, in which the seam is entirely done away with, and consequently a roll-plated wire furnished for use in the arts; and the invention consists, first, of an improved method of covering composition stock with a seamless plating, and, secondly, of a seamless drawn or roll-plated wire, as a new article of manufacture.
In the accompanying drawings, Figures 1 to 5 represent the method heretofore in use of making drawn or roll-plated wire for jewelry, and Figs.6 to 10 show the different steps of making seamless drawn or roil'plated wire according to my improved method.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
In manufacturing seamless roll-plated wire according to my improved method, I first apis obtained. From this compound plate a disk- I shaped blank is cut. This blank is next drawn into the shape of a hollow cylinder, closed at oneend, by means of proper dies, iin such a manner that the fine metal is at the outside. This cylindrical blank is next filled with a core, 0, of composition metal, and the whole then drawn or rolled out and reduced 'to the proper thickness of wire required, forming thus a seamless drawn or roll-plated wire, (shown in Figs. 9 and 10,) that can be used with great advantages in the jewelers or other arts, as all the different parts of the articles of jewelry can be formed therefrom at a considerable saving of time and labor, as the care required for the special location of the seam in the roll-plated jewelry heretofore manufactured is entirely dispensed with.
blank from a compound plate the gold plate may first be formed into shape by suitable dies proper thickness and shape in the same manner as heretofore described. 7,
The wire produced by the method described has a seamless plating of gold stock which inadhering thereto intimately by the pressure asserted thereon in drawing or rolling, as contradistinguished from the plating obtained by electro-deposition.
By the use of such wire in the manufacture of jewelry--such as gold chains, ear-rings, bracelets, and, other articles-a considerable saving of time and labor is accomplished, as
without specialadj ustment, while the quality and durability of the articles of jewelry manufactured therefrom are considerably enhanced and a more substantial and finished appearance imparted to the same.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by LettersPatent-- 1. The method herein described of making seamless drawn or roll-plated wire, which consists of the following steps: first, forming a disk-shaped blank of composition stock and gold plate, or of gold alone, then drawing the same into the shape of a hollow cylinder closed at one end, then filling said cylinder with inferior metal, and finally drawing or rolling the In place of forming the hollow cylindrical the wire can be worked up into any shape and then filled with composition metal, the filled blank being then drawn or rolled to thecloses entirely the filling of composition stock so-formed cylindrical blank to the proper shape In testimony that Iclaim the foregoing as my and thickness required, substantially as set invention I have signed my name in presence 10 forth. of two subscribing witnesses.
2. As anew articleof manufacture seamless 5 drawn or roll-plated wire for jewelry, formed KAUFMANN KAUFMANN' of a filling of composition stock and an exte- Witnesses: rior seamless layer of fine stock, substantially PAUL GroEPEL as set forth. CARL KARP.
