ROACH CONICAL SHADOW BOX DISPLAY 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 Filed Dec. 14, 1946 k rm 0 i 7 mp 2 J m I Patented Oct. 17, 1950 CONICALSHADOW-BOXDISPLAY Earl M. Roach, Chicago, Ill., 'assignor to Arvey Corporation, Chicago, 111., a corporation of Illinois .Applica'tionlDccembcr 14, 1946, Serial No. 716,246
This invention relates to improvements in display devices and is more particularly concerned with the provision of a shadow box display adapted to be simply and inexpensively constructed of cardboard, or the like, 'foruse in displaying and advertising various kinds of merchandise.
This invention further contemplates the provision of an improved shadow box display in which an annular frame of angular cross section 'is adhesively or otherwise attached to the base of a conical body, the frame and body being secured in set-up position by means .of interlocking tongues and notches formed on the frame, and collapsible to a flat knock-down form suitable for storage or shipment to a point of use. This invention further contemplates the provision of a shadow box display in which the annular frame embodies inner and outer annular flanges diverging rearwardly from the base of the conical body, with the inner flange disposed in spaced, substantially parallel relation to the inner side Wall of the conical body to thus provide an annular inwardly facing recess from which light rays from a suitable lamp disposed within the recess will be reflected inwardly along the inner surface of the conical body and toward the apex thereof withoutilluminating the front face of the annular frame. If desired, a lamp may be positioned in front of the display for directing a beam of light toward the frontend thereof, to thus illuminate the front face of the annular frame and that portion of the conical body disposed within the inner diameter of the frame, with an annular relatively dark area between the frame and the illuminated portion of the conical body.
This invention embodies other novel features, details of construction and arrangement of parts which are hereinafter set forth in the specification and claims, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings wherein:
Fig. l is a front elevational view showing a conical shadow box display embodying features of this invention.
Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken along the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail sectional view taken along the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is an enlarged detail sectional view taken along the line 4-4 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 5 is a fragmentary detail view illustrating the manner in which the ends of the annular frame are moved toward each other for interlocking engagement. I
5-Claims. (01. 40-126)- 2 Fig. 6 is a 'plan view showing a display in its flat collapsed position. I J I t I Referring now to the drawings for a better understanding 'of this invention, the shadow box display is constructed from a disc-shaped blank of cardboard A and an arcuate-shaped blank of cardboard B which are adhesively or otherwise attached to each "other at I to provide a flat knock-down form, as illustrated in Fig. 6,.suitable for storage or shipment to the point 'of use. The blank A is scored radially at B, 9 and I0 to permit the blank to be drawn into a conical formation to provide a cone-shaped body I I'for. the display.
One end of the blank B is formed with a notch I2 and locking tongues I3 and I4, and the other end of the blank is formed with a notch I6 and a locking tongue II. The blank B is also scored along a line I8 to provide a frame I9 having an inner flange 2 I and an outer flange 22. The blank A is also scored at 23 to provide an attachment flange 24 for adhesive engagement at I. to the outer flange 22 of the frame 2|. A tongue 26 is formed on the blank 'A at the outer end of the score line 9 for insertion in a slot,2'| formed in the blank A. In setting up the display, the sections 28 and 29 of the blank A defined by the score lines -B, 9 and III are caused to move outwardly into sideby-side relation, and is illustrated in Fig. 4, to permit insertion of the tongue 26 through the slot 21. The blank A thus forms a conical body .II of the display. During the formation of the cone-shaped body I l the ends of the frame. I9 are moved toward each other for interlocking engagement by means of notches I2 and I6 and the tongues I3, I4 and Il. The tongue I1 is adapted to be moved downwardly through a notch 3| while the tongue l3 is disposed against the inner face of the outer annular flange .22.. Each locking tongue I3 and I1 is thus disposed against the back face of the annular outer flange 22 and is not visible from the front side of the display. After the ends of the frame I9 have been inter locked by means of the tongues I3 and H, the
tongue I4 is positioned against the front side of the inner annular, flange 2|. The ends of the frame I9 are also formed with oppositely disposed ears 32 and 33 disposed for overlapping engagement with the car 32 disposed over the ear 33. After the ends of the frame I9 have been interlocked in the manner shown'and described, the tongue 26 on the blank A is inserted through the slot 21 to form an assembled shadow box display.
In the use of the display, it is contemplated that electric lamps (not shown) may be inserted through one or more apertures 35 provided in the cone-shaped body II. It will be noted that the openings 34 are located to dispose the electric lamps within the annular recess 36 defined by the cone-shaped body I I and the fame l9. When the electric lamps are connected to a suitable source of current, light is reflected by the walls defining'the recess 36 to direct the light beams inwardly along the inner surface of the coneshaped body I I and toward the apex thereof. By this means of illumination, the inner surface of the cone-shaped body II is brightly illuminated while the outer surface of the annular frame l9 will appear relatively dark.
It is also contemplated that the display may be used with an electric lamp positioned in front of the display to direct light toward the outer surface of th annular frame l9 and the inner sur-. face of the cone-shaped body I I. With this form 10f illumination, the front face of the annular frame I 9 and that portion of the cone-shaped annular darkened area within the annular recess Goods on display are positioned in front of and/or around the shadow box.
It will be seen that the blanks A and B forming ,this display may be inexpensively cut, scored and adhesively united in a fiat superimposed relation suitable for shipping and storage. It will further be seen that the display may be erected to its set-up position by merely moving the ends of the frame I9 toward each other for interlocking engagement. It will further be noted that the sections 28 and 29 of the body sets of interlocking fingers of the type formed on the frame at l3 and I1.
While this invention has been shown in but one form, it is obvious to those skilled in the art that it is not so limited but is susceptible of various changes and modifications without departing from the spirit and scope of the claimed invention.
