Patented Nov. 11, 1941 6 OFFICE FOLDING CHRISTMAS FIREPLACE Donald M. Reed, Terre, Haute, Ind. Application April 22, 1940, Serial N0. "331,658 Claims. (,Cl. 46-12) The present invention relates to improvements in folding decorations and more particularly to folding Christmas fireplaces, the primary object of the invention being to provide a place for children to hang their stockingson Christmas Eve, because many homes have no fireplace. v
Another object-of the invention is the provision of a folding Christmas fireplace including parts which serve as a container in which the remaining parts of the fireplace may be packed.
A further object is to provide a folding Christmas fireplace which may be readily assembled and dismantled.
A still further object resides in the provision of an attractive illuminable decoration.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent "during the course of the following detailed description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and in which drawings:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the assembled folding Christmas fireplace.
Figure 2 is a central vertical cross sectional view of the fireplace.
Figure 3 is a front elevation of a head panel forming a part of the fireplace.
Figures 4 and 5 are front elevations of left and right pilasters thereof, before folding.
Figures 6 and 7 are bottom plans of the mantel and hearth thereof.
Figure 8 is a front elevation of a grate, before folding.
Figure 9 is a front elevation of a back panel thereof.
Figure 10 is a fragmentary sectional detail of a separable connection preferably forming a part of the fireplace.
Figure 11 is a longitudinal vertical sectional view of the foldably collapsed fireplace in condition for shipment or storage.
In the drawings, which for the purpose of illustration show only a preferred embodiment of the invention, and wherein similar reference characters denote corresponding parts thruout the several views, the letter A generally designates the folding fireplace, including a hearth B, a mantel shelf C, left and right pilasters D, a head panel E, a back panel F and a grate G.
The hearth B and mantel shelf C include top walls 15, I6, downwardly extending front flanges I1, l8, rear flanges I9, 20, and end flanges 2|, 22. In the example shown, the front flange ll of the hearth includes tabs 23 stitched to the end flanges 2|, and the end flanges 2| include similar tabs 23 stitched to rear flange I9. As
illustrated in Figure 6, the rear flange 2ll of the mantel shelfisprovided with tabs 23 stitched to the end flanges 22 and the end'fianges likewise include tabs23 stitched to the front flange. Thus the hearth B and mantel shelf C may be formed from rectangular blank sheets Without loss of material. From an inspection of Figure 11, it
. will be noted that the inverted mantel shelf C forms a container and the hearth B a cover therefor. v
Referring now to the left and right pilasters D, the same include, foldably joined front, outside and inside panels 25; 26 and 21. As shown in Figures 4 and 5, the inside panels at their upper ends include strip portions 28 'of reduced width. In order to removably dispose the pilasters D between the hearth Band mantel shelf C as shown in Figure l, the hearth and mantel shelf are provided withslots 30 for the reception of tongues 3| extending from the upper and lower end margins of the pilasters. 1 v v Extending between the pilasters D and in downwardly depending relationto the mantel shelf C is the head panel foldable along its longitudinal center line 35 to reduce its width for storage and" shipment, and foldablev intramarginally of its lower, endfto provide an inturned flange 36 as sho'wnin Figure 2. Projecting from the side margins of the head panel are tongues 3| removably disposable in slots 30 along the strip portions 28 of the inside panels of the pilasters D, and extending from the ends of the inturned flange 36 are tabs 31 for engaging the strip portions 28.
Extending between the pilasters D and in upwardly projecting relation to the hearth B is the back panel F foldable along its longitudinal center line 40 to reduce its width for storage and shipment, and provided at its bottom edge with a tongue 3| insertable ina slot 30 of the hearth. Formed intramarginally of its sides are slots 30 for the reception of tongues 3i extramarginally of the inside panels 21.
Removably disposable on the hearth B between the pilasters D is a grate G, including a front section 45, a platform section 46 foldably joined to the front section along a horizontal line 41 intermediate its sides and upwardly of its base, side sections 48 foldably joined to the front sections at its ends, and back sections 49 foldably joined to the side sections. These back sections upon assembly are inturned to interlock with the horizontally elevated platform section 46 at notches 50. Formed in the platform section is an aperture 5| for the accommodation of j a suitable light (not shown). The grate G is '1 .also provided in its front section with spaced 3 vertical slots 52. 1
From the foregoing description, it will be understood that the pilasters D, head plate E, back 3 plate F and the grate G are, foldably collapsible for disposition in the mantel C and hearth B, 1 which constitute a box for the storage and shipment of the fireplace, and that the various parts may be readily assembled and dismantled thru 1 the provision of the separable fastening means including the "tongues 3| and slots 30. It will 3 also be understood that the various parts may j be printed or otherwise treated to simulate brick,
stone, or other materials from which fireplaces 1 are usually constructed. v v
Q Various changes may be made in the form' of 1 invention herein shown and described without I departing from the spirit of the'invention or the scope of the following'claims.
I claim:
mediate its ends, side sections foldably joined to the front section along its ends, and back sections foldably joined to the side sections, said back sections being removably engageable with the platform section.
4. In a collapsible fireplace construction, a box including a container member and a cover member, one of said members constituting a hearth and the other a mantel shelf, a mantel for removable disposition betweenn'the hearth and shelf, said mantel comprising spaced pilasters including'foldably joined front, inside and outside panels, a head panel for removable dispo- "sition between the pilasters and in depending relation to the shelf, a rear panelfor removable disposition between the pilasters and in upwardly extending relation to the hearth, and a grate including a front section to be disposed 1...In a collapsible fireplace'construction, a

In ,afireplace construction, a collapsible j grate including a front section, a platform section foldably joined to thefront section inter- 1 hearth, a mantel shelf, and a mantel for removable dispositionbetween the hearth and shelf, saidqmantel comprising independent spaced pij lasters including foldably joined front, inside and l outside panels, a head panel for removable dis- I position between-said inside panels of the pilas- V I ter's'and in downwardly extending relation to the b shelf, and a back panel for removabledisposition 'betweensaid inside panels of the pilasters and in upwardly extending relation-to the hearth.
between the pilasters, a platform section foldably joined to the front section for disposition in elevated relation to the hearth, side sections foldably joined to the front section along its ends.
fordisposition adjacent the inside panels, and back sections foldably joined to'the side sections and removably engageable with the platform section, said mantel and grate being collapsible for shipment and storage within'sa'id box.
5. In a collapsible vfireplace construction, a hearth, a mantel shelf, a'mantel for removable disposition between the hearth andsh'elf, said mantel comprising spaced pilasters including foldably joined frontinside and outside panels, a head panel for removable disposition between the pilasters and in downwardly extending relation to theshelf, arear panel for removable dispositionbetween the pilasters and in upwardly extending relation to the hearth, and a grate including a front section'to be disposed between the pilasters, a platform sectionfoldablyjoined to, thefront section for disposition in upwardly spaced relation to the hearth, side sections foldably joined to the front section along'its ends for disposition adjacent the inside. panels, and back sections foldably joined to theside sections and removably engageable with the platform section.
