This invention relates to ashtrays and in particular to disposable ashtrays formed from foldable blanks. I
The main object of the invention is to provide adisposable ashtray which may be readily and easily assembled from a foldable'blank.
Another object of the invention isto provide a disposable ashtray formed from a foldable blank adapted to hold a cigarette or the like in spaced relationship above the ash retaining portion thereof.
Another object of the invention is to provide a disposable ashtray formed from a foldable blank having a novel tab arrangement for holding the various portions thereof in the desired assembled relationship with respect to each other.
Another object of. the invention is to provide a disposable-ashtray formed from a foldable blank lined with asbestos paper or the likewherein the rough asbestos fibers of the lining provide sealing means atthe joints thereof.
Other objects of the invention will become apparent by reference to the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing. in which:
Fig. 1 is a plan view of a foldable blank from which a disposable ashtray embodying the invention may be readily assembled.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged view in perspective showing a completely assembled disposable ashtray embodying the invention assembled from the blank disclosed in Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a plan View of a foldable blank having portions thereof covered with asbestos paper or the like from which a disposable ashtray embodying the invention may be readily assembled.
Fig. 4 is an enlarged View in perspective showing a completely assembled asbestos lined disposable ashtray assembled from the blank disclosed in Fig. 3.
Referring now to the drawing wherein like numerals refer to like and corresponding parts throughout the several views, the disposable ashtray disclosed in Figs. 1 and 2 is formed from a blank A of suitably die cut and scored fireproof cardboard or the like. tray is composed of a bottom panel If]v having a front panel ll bent upwardly therefrom from which two side panels l2 are bent at an angle greater than degrees rearwardly from the said front panel ll and are disposed diagonallyover and in contact with the said bottom'panel [0, a rear panel 13 bent upwardly from the said bottom panel l0 into abutment with the upwardly and outwardly sloping ends I20 of the side panels The said disposable ash- 1938, Serial No. 211,356
l2, and a downwardly and outwardly sloping combined carrying tab and prop It; all of which is maintained in the assembled relationship shown in Fig. 2 by means of a pair of suitably disposed hook shaped tabs l5 projecting from the said side panels I? and a pair of suitably disposed hook shaped tabs l6 projecting from the combined carrying tab and prop it which are wedged into suitable slots ll punched in the rear panel !3, one each of the said tabs 15 and 16 being inserted in each slot I! when the said disposable ashtray is completely assembled. The said tabs it projecting from the combined carrying tab and prop l4 being disposed inwardly with respect to the said tabs l5 projecting from the side panels i2 when the said tabs are positioned through the said slots ll whereby to cause the said tabs Hi to bend outwardly after being inserted through the said slots Ii and serve as clinching means for maintaining the ash holding portion of the said disposable ashtray in assembled relationship.
The blank from which the said ashtray is formed is preferably provided with a suitable elongated aperture I8 extending substantially equidistant on both sides of the bend line 20 between the rear panel 13 and the prop M as best illustrated in Fig. 1, the said elongated aperture l8 being slightly narrower than the diameter of a cigarette whereby to frictionally engage a cigarette positioned therein after the ashtray is completely assembled. Also, the rounded ends of the said slot 18 form seats IQ for supporting a cigarette which may be inserted in the said slots [8 after the ashtray'is completely assembled;
The dotted lines 20 in Figs. 1 and 3 repre'sen the bend lines between the various parts of the disposable ashtray which are preferably scored to make the folding and assembly of the said blank into an ashtray easy and accurate.
The embodiment of the invention disclosed in Figs. 3 and 4 is substantially the same as the embodiment of the invention disclosed in Figs. 1 and 2 except that the material from which the blank is cut is a non fireproof cardboard and is provided with an-asbestos paper lining 2| of the shape indicated on the blank in Fig. 3. It will be particularly noted that the asbestos lining 2| is cut diagonally along the lines 22 to fit inside of the upwardly sloping ends I20 and bottom edges I200 of the said side panelsl2 whereby to provide a right angle joint between the bottom panel l0 and rear panel l3 and the side panels II.
The said asbestos paperlining .2l is preferably cut so that the edges thereof which become juxtaposed when the ashtray disclosed in Figs. 3 and 4 is assembled are slightly rough whereby to admit of the protruding asbestos fibers thereof to interlock and seal the joints between the said juxtaposed edges of the said asbestos paper lining 2|.
The applicant has provided a novel ashtray of disposable material which is very inexpensive to manufacture and which may be produced in blank and assembled by the user. The asbestos paper lining, if used, not only provides a fireproof surface but provides means for accomplishing tight joints between the side panels and the bottom and rear panels of the said disposable ashtray. The novel arrangement of tabs and angular disposition thereof after assembly provides novel, facile and inexpensive means for securing the said disposable ashtray in its assembled relationship.
Although but two embodiments of the invention have been shown and described herein, it is obvious that many changes and modifications may be made in the size, shape, arrangement and details of the various elements of the invention without departing from the spirit thereof and it is not intended to limit the scope of the invention other than by the terms of the appended claims.
I claim:
1. A disposable ashtray formed from a foldable blank of fireproof material composed of a bottom panel, a front panel bent upwardly from said bottom panel, side panels bent from the sides of the said front panel greater than degrees rearwardly from said front panel disposed angularly over and in abutting contact with said bottom panel, the rear ends of the said side panels sloping upwardly and outwardly with respect to the rear line of the said bottom panel, a rear panel bent upwardly from the said rear line of the said bottom panel into abutment with the said upwardly and outwardly sloping ends of the said side panels, a prop bent downwardly and outwardly from the top of the said rear panel to a line level with the bottom of the said bottom panel, tabs hooking downwardly from the rear ends of the said side panels, and tabs bent greater than 90 degrees from said prop toward said rear panel hooking upwardly from said prop, the said rear panel having a pair of slots therein in alignment with the rear ends of said side panels each slot being adapted to receive one each of said tabs, the said tabs from the prop being disposed inwardly with respect to the tabs from the said side panels when the said ashtray is assembled whereby to maintain the said sidepanel tabs in clinched relationship with respect to the rear panel after the assembly of the said ashtray.
2. A disposable ashtray formed from a foldable blank of fireproof material composed of a bo tom panel, a front panel bent upwardly from said bottom panel, side panels bent from the sides of the said front panel greater than 90 degrees rearwardly from said front panel disposed angularly over and in abutting contact with said bottom panel, the rear ends of the said side panels slop ing upwardly and outwardly with respect to the rear line of the said bottom panel, a rear panel bent upwardly from the said rear line of the said bottom panel into abutment with the said upwardly and outwardly sloping ends of the said side panels, a prop bent downwardly and outwardly from the top of the said rear. panel to a line level with the bottom of the said bottom panel, tabs hooking downwardly from the rear ends of the said side panels, and tabs bent greater than 90 degrees from said prop toward said rear panel hooking upwardly from said prop, the said rear panel having a pair of slots therein in alignment with the rear ends of said side panels each. slot being adapted toreceive one each of said tabs, the said tabs from the prop being disposed inwardly with respect to the tabs from the said side panels when the said ashtray is assembled whereby to maintain the said side panel tabs in clinched relationship with respect to the rear panel after the assembly of the said ashtray, the said blank before bending having an elongated slot therein disposed longitudinally with respect to the said rear and prop panels before bending and located substantially half in the said rear panel and substantially half in the said prop panel whereby to provide seats for supporting a cigarette inserted in the said slot after bending, the width of the said slot being slightly less than the diameter of a cigarette whereby to admit of retaining a cigarette frictionally in said slot.
3. A disposable ashtray formed from a foldable blank composed of a bottom panel, a front panel bent upwardly from said bottom panel, side panels bent from the sides of the said front panel greater than 90 degrees rearwardly from said front panel disposed angularly over and in abutting contact with said bottom panel, the rear ends of the said side panels sloping upwardly and outwardly with respect to the rear line of the said bottom panel, a rear panel bent upwardly from the said rear line of the said bottom panel into abutment with the said upwardly and outwardly sloping ends of the said side panels, a prop bent downwardly and outwardly from the top of the said rear panel to a line level with the bottom of the said bottom panel, tabs hooking downwardly from the rear ends of the said side panels, tabs bent greater than 90 degrees from said prop toward said rear panel hooking upwardly from said prop, the said rear panel having a pair of slots therein in alignment with the rear ends of said side panels each slot being adapted to receive one each of said tabs, the said tabs from the prop being disposed inwardly with respect to the tabs from the said side panels when the said ashtray is assembled whereby to maintain the said side panel tabs in clinched relationship with respect to the rear panel after the assembly of the said ashtray, and a fireproof lining for said ashtray secured to said foldable blank prior to folding and assembling said ashtray.
4. A disposable ashtray formed from a foldable blank composed of a bottom panel, a front panel bent upwardly from said bottom panel, side panels bent from the sides of the said front panel greater than 90 degrees rearwardly from said front panel disposed angularly over and in abutting contact with said bottom panel, the rear ends of the said side panels sloping upwardly and outwardly with respect to the rear line of the said bottom panel, a rear panel bent upwardly from-the said rear line of the said bottom panel into abutment with the said upwardly and outwardly sloping ends of the said side panels, a prop bent downwardly'and outwardly from the top of the said rear panel to a line level with the bottom of the said bottom panel, tabs hooking downwardly from the rear ends of the said side panels, tabs bent greater than 90 degrees from said prop toward said rear panel hooking upwardly from said prop, the said rear panel having a pair of slots therein in alignment with the rear ends of said side panels each slot being adapted to receive one each of said tabs, the said tabs from the prop being disposed inwardly with respect to the tabs rom the said side panels when the said ashtray isassembled whereby to maintain the said side panel tabs in clinched relationship with respect to the rear panel after the assembly of the said ashtray, the said blank before bending having an elongated slot therein disposed longitudinally with respect to the said rear and prop panels before bending and located substantially half in the said rear panel and substantially half in the said prop panel whereby to provide seats for supporting a cigarette inserted in the said slot after bending, the width of the said slot being slightly less than the diameter of a cigarette whereby to admit of retaining a cigarette frictionally in said slot, and a fireproof lining for said ashtray secured to said foldable blank prior to folding and assembling said ashtray.
5. A disposable ashtray formed from a foldable blank composed of a bottom panel, a front panel bent upwardly from said bottom panel, side panels bent from the sides of the said front panel greater than 90 degrees rearwardly from said front panel disposed angularly over and in abutting contact with said bottom panel, the rear ends of the said side panels sloping upwardly and outwardly with respect to the rear line of the said bottom panel, a rear panel bent upwardly from the said rear line of the said bottom panel into abutment with the said upwardly and outwardly sloping ends of the said side panels, a prop bent downwardly and outwardly from the top of the said rear panel to a line level with the bottom of the said bottom panel, tabs hooking downwardly from the rear ends of the said side panels, and tabs bent greater than 90 degrees from said prop toward said rear panel hooking upwardly from said prop, the said rear panel having a pair of slots therein in alignment with the rear ends of said side panels each slot being adapted to receive one each of said tabs, the said tabs from the prop being disposed inwardly with respect to the tabs from the said side panels when the said ashtray is assernbled'whereby to maintain the said side panels tabs in clinched relationship with respect to the rear panel after,
