Description

modem v. T. BRIGGS.
STONE SLED.
PatentedJan. 17,1882
Wain/away.
UNITED STATES PATENT. OFFICE. f
VANRENSSELAER T. BRIGGS, OF DE WITT TOWNSHIP, CLINTON COUNTY,
MICHIGAN.
STONE-SLED.
SPECIEEECATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 252,422, dated'January 17, 1882.
' Application filed April 4, 1881. (ModeL) To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, VANRENSSELAER T.
.BRIGGs, of the township of DeWitt, county of Clinton, and Stateot'Michigin, haveinvented a new and valuable Improvement in Stone- Sleds, which has not been in public use in the United States; and I do hereby declare that the bow, two or more being placed side by side,
and secured together by means of pins, dowels, and cross-bars, and having side rails made of pieces of common scantling secured along the upper sides of the planks around'the outer edges, the whole forming a sort of a scowshaped sled.
The nature of this invention consists in a metallic bow or shoe, S, to form the bow end of such kinds ofsleds. My metallic bow or shoe S is bolted to planks B B, the ends of which abut the stren gthenin g-rib orcross-bar O,which forms a part of the shoe S, and the side rails,G G, are pinned to the outer edges of the planks B B, and bolted down through them and also to the outer strengthening-rim, H, which is formed around the outer edge of the shoe, all as is shown in the drawing. There is nothing new about-the planks B B nor side rails, (J C,
to take the place of the crooked planks, and to permit theuse of straight planks and side rails in their stead-,and hence any wooden part being broken can be easily replaced, while the under side of the metallic shoe or bow, being will therefore appear that my metallic shoe is hard and smooth with wearing, will more easily pass over obstructions and be much more lasting than wood. In theouter upturned part of the bow S isformed a hole, P,immediately within the outer rim, H, in which to fasten a clevis or chain by which to fasten a team to the sled.
Having thus fully described my invention,
what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a stone sled or boat, the metallic shoe or bow S, having outer rim, H, hitching-hole P, and cross-bar 0, to form the bow part of a stonesled, in combination, with straight planks B B and side rails, (J (J, substantially as specified. Dated at Lansing, Michigan, April 2, 1881-.
