I 1 Claim.

' This invention relates to utility holders. More particularly, the invention pertains to utility holders of the type which are used to hold and handle scouring pads.

It is an object of the invention to provide a utility holder of the character described, which is so shaped and constructed that it can be employed for long periods without too greatly tiring a user. It is a further object of the invention to provide a utility holder which can firmly grip pads of any shape, is of simple construction and will protect the finger tips.

Other objects of the invention will in part be obvious and in part hereinafter pointed out.

The invention accordingly consists in the features of construction, combinations of elements and arrangement of parts which will be exemplified in the constructions hereinafter described and of which the scope of application will be indicated in the appended claim.

In the accompanying drawings in which are shown various possible embodiments of the invention,

Referring now to the drawings, and more particularly to Figs. 1-3, the utility holder Hi there shown is formed from a single piece of sheet material which has been blanked and shaped in any suitable fashion to provide a device such as illustrated. Said holder comprises two arms l2, I4 integrally connected by a wide externally convex base It Each arm includes an outwardly convex portion l2a, Ma adjacent the base. These convex portions preferably terminate about an inch away from the base and run smoothly into externally concave portions 1211, Mb. The degree of curvature of the base and convex portions is such that the ends of the convex portions mutually converge and said base and convex portions are shaped so that the maximum spacing between the convex portions is about from one and onequarter to one and one-half inches. Excellent operative results are obtained where the base and convex portions are of circularly segmental section and together extend over an arc of about.

' in generally the same direction, but may diverge slightly when the utility holder is idle, the same, however, being adapted to be pressed into approximate parallelism or even convergence when holding a scouring pad S. If desired, the lower portions [20, I40 of the arms may be substantially straight, although said latter portions can be omitted if the concave portions are lengthened. Preferably, the concave portions [2b, Mb extend at least about an inch away from the ends of the convex portions l2a, Ma, and the straight portions I20, I40 are about one-half inch long. The holder may be of any suitable width.

The holder can be made from any self-formmaintaining material, metal or plastic preferably being employed. The material also should be resilient, as in the use of the holder it is contemplated that the pad be inserted between the two arms and the arms pressed together by the finers of the user.

To facilitate gripping action of the arms, the holder may include two rows of oppositely facing teeth l8, one row on each arm adjacent the tip thereof. Desirably, these rows of teeth are struck from the arms and are disposed in about the same plane. Also, it is desirable to have the tips of the arms provided with outturned flanges 20 for protecting the finger tips of a user.

It will be observed from inspection of Fig. 2 that the convex portions l2a, lZb are adapted to be snugly received in the palm of the hand and that the concave portions I2b, Mb are adapted to be engaged by the finger tips.

By forming the base and arms in the foregoing manner, the utility holder fits naturally into the hand and can be handled for long periods without greatly tiring the user.

It will be understood that the tips of the teeth 18 normally are spaced apart far enough to permit an ordinary scouring pad to be inserted into the device between said teeth. However, it will be appreciated that the arms of said holder can be forced apart in order to receive wider pads if desired. 7

In Figs. 4-6 we have shown another utility holder 30 embodying a modified form of the invention and differing from the holder I0 only in the manner in which the finger guards and teeth are provided. In this latter holder the straight portions I20, I40 of the arms are integrally connected to outwardly projecting ridges 32 which a act as guards for the finger tips. The free ends of said ridges have rows of oppositely facing approximately coplanar teeth 34 for engaging the scouring pad.

It will thus be seen that utility holders have been provided which achieve the objects of the invention and are well adapted to meet the conditions of practical use.

As various possible embodiments might be made of the above invention, and as various changes might be made in the embodiments above set forth, it is to be understood that all matter herein described and/or shown in the accompanying drawings is to be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.-

Having thus described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:

A utility holder consisting of a single piece of resilient stiff sheet material, said holder comprising a Wide externally convex base integrally connected to a pair of arms, the arms adjacent the base being externally concave, said concave arms smoothly running into said convexbase, the free ends of said arms extending generally in the same direction and smoothly running into straight portions, said straight portions being parallel to each other, said base being ofcircularly segmental section and extending over a circular arc of about 240 and having a radius'of from about to of an inch, said concave arms extending about an'inch away from the base and the straight portions extending about inch away from the concave arms whereby when the base lies in the palm of a users hand and the fingers of the hand are at the sides of the holder on the concave arms, the tips of the fingers are disposed adjacent the extremities of the straight portions, outwardly projecting finger guards at the extremities of the straight portions and on which a users fingertips rest, and a series of inwardly projecting spaced teeth comprising a single row on each straight portion, likewise at the extremities of the straight portions, said teeth on each straight portion lying in a horizontal plane perpendicular to that-straight portion, the teeth on one straight portion being opposite the recesses between the teeth on the other straight portion whereby the teeth of one straight portion can interlock with those of the other straight portion when the holder is closed entirely.
