MANICURE INSTRUMENT.

MANICURE INSTRUMENT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 31, 1917.
Application filed April 6, 1916. Serial N 0. 89,477.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN B. IVILLIAM- son, a citizen of the United States, residing at Louisville, in the-county of Jefferson and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Manicure Instruments, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to manicure instruments and has as its object to provide an instrument of this class of simple form which may be manufactured at a low cost and may be carried about conveniently in ones pocket as for example upon a key ring and which instrument may be employed as a nail file, finger nail cleaner, and in push.- ing back the cuticle from the nail.
It is one aim of the invention to so form the instrument that the same may be conveniently employed in cleaning the finger nails without likelihood, however, of injury being caused either to the finger nail itself or to the flesh beneath the nail as is likely to occur where an ordinary penknife is employed.
Another aim of the invention is to so construct the instrument that the same may be employed in pushing back the cuticle from the nail without likelihood of tearing the cuticle or roughening the same.
In the accompanying drawings:
Figure l is a perspective view illustrating the manner of using the device in filing down the nails;
Fig. 2 is a similar View illustrating the manner of using the device in cleaning the nails;
Fig. 3 is a plan view of the device;
Fig. l is a longitudinal sectional view on the line 4-4. of Fig. 3.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the accompanying drawings by the same reference characters.
The instrument embodying the present invention is preferably stamped or otherwise formed from a sheet metal blank and the same comprises a head or finger piece indicated by the numeral 1 which is located at one end of the body portion of the device indicated by the numeral 2, said head and body portion occupying a common plane inasmuch as the device throughout its entire length is flat sided. It is preferable that the head 1 be formed centrally with an opening 3 which permits 9f the instrument being firmly grasped between the thumb and forefinger of one hand while the instrument is being employed in manicuring the nails of the other hand and which opening may also receive a key ring. In order that the instrument may be employed in filing down the edges of thenails the opposite faces of. the body portion 2 of the instrument are serrated or roughened as indicated by the numeral 4 and consequently either side or face of the said body portion may be employed for this purpose.
As stated, the head 1 is located at one end of the body portion 2 of the instrument and the body portion at its other end is provided with an extension 5 connected by a shank 6 with the head 7. The opposite edges of the extension 5 are recessed on curved lines as indicated at 8 the curvature corresponding substantially to the curvature of the tip end of the finger. The outer end edge of the extension 5 is located at right angles to the longitudinal axis of the instrument and the forward ends of the concave edges 8 terminate at the said forward end edge of the said extension 5 resulting in the formation at opposite sides of the shank 6 of shoulders 9 which, it will be apparent, are located in juxtaposition to the concave edges 8 at the corresponding sides of the instrument. The head 7 is of a maximum width substantially equal to the width of the extension 5 in a line with the shoulders 9 and consequently notches 10 are provided at the opposite sides of the shank 6. The inner or rear edge of the head 7 is preferably parallel to the shoulders 9 but the outer or forward edge thereof describes approximately a semicircle, being convex as indicated at 11.
When the instrument is to be employed in cleaning beneath the finger nails, it is dis posed edgewise to the tip end of the finger the nail of which is to be cleaned and with the corresponding edge 8 of the extension 5 of the instrument resting against the said end of the finger and with the shoulder 9 extending beneath the free edge portion of the finger nail in the manner clearly shown in Fig. 2. The instrument is then moved back and forth around the tip end of the finger in a manner which will be readily understood. It will be understood of course that the corner portions of the extension 5 within the angles between the shoulders 9 and forward portions of the edges 8 of the said extension. constitute cleaning teeth and.
that as before stated the engagement of the fingers serves to prevent these teethfrom When the instrument is to be employed pushing back the cuticle from the nail the instrument is disposed endWise to the finger and with the convex edge 1101 the head 7 bearing against the cuticle. Pressure is then gently exerted against the instrument toward the base of the finger nail for accomplishing the result desired. It Will be-understood that due to the provision of'the convex edge 11 and-the use of the instrument in the manner stated, the cuticle may be pushed back from the nail without likelihood of'injuringeither the nail or cuticle or in any Way; roughening or tearing the cuticle.
Having thus described the invention What is claimed as new is:
1. An instrumentof theclass described including a Hat one piece elongated body portion having its opposite longitudinal edges at one end thereofconcave to adapt them to fit against and conform tothe tip end of a finger and provided beyond said concave portions With oppositely disposed Copies of this patent may beobtained for'five cents each, by .addre ssingitherr Commissioner of "Patents,"
substantially rectangular recesses defining spaced parallel shoulders constituting cleaning teeth; said end of the body portion being provided with a fiat head having a blunt uninterrupted convex Working edge merg- 7 ing into the adjacent shoulders.
2.: Anminstrument of the class described comprising a fiat one piece elongated body portion'having one end thereof substantially circular in contour and provided with a central opening. and its opposite longitudinal edges at the other end thereofconcave to cleaningteeth, the last mentioned end of the 'body portion being. provided with a head having a blunt continuous convex Working edge merging into the ad acent shoulders and one side of the bodyv portion between the 7 central opening therein and the concave portions being provided with a filing surface.
Intestnnony whereof I afii'x my signature. 7
