Description

Dec. 14 1926. Y 1,610,925
J. D. B'RYAN TOIQETAREICLE Filed March 24. 1926 Patented @ec. 1d, 1926.
Jo'snrni n. BRYAN, or onioaeo, rnnrnois.
Tense ars'rronn.
Application filed March 2a, 13%; Serial 1 T0.' 96,922 1 The object of the invention is to provide an article of the nature described which shall be of improved construction and operation, which'shall be neat in appearance, convenient to use, and effective for the purpose for which it is intended.
The invention is exemplified in the combination and arrangement of parts shown in the accompanying drawings and described in the following specification, and it is more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings- Fig. 1 is an elevation of one embodiment of the invention;
Fig. 2 is a view looking from the right 012 Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is an elevation of a case for holding the device shown in Figs. 1 and 2;
Fig. 1 is a view looking from the right of Fig. 3;
Fig. 5 is an enlarged elevation of the inner surface of one of the tongs of the tweezers;
Fig. 6 is a view similar to Fig. 5 showing the opposite tong.
Fig. 7 is a section on line 7-7 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 8 is an enlarged elevation of the tweezer tongs in the act of grasping a hair;
Fig. 9 shows the tongs closed upon the hair.
As shown in Fig. 1, the article comprises a handle portion 10 having spring tongs 11 and 12 extending therefrom to form a. pair of spring tweezers. The end of the tong 11 is pointed, as shown in Fig. 6, and is scored on its inner surface to provide a roughened surface for grasping any article held beoween the tongs. The tong 1-2 is provided with side flanges 13 between which the pointed end of the tong 11 fits when the tongs are closed. The forward ends of the flanges 13 are curved backwardly from the pointed end of the tong, as shown at 1 1 in Fig. 8. This exposes the pointed end of the tong so that it may be used for grasping an article in a small opening or beneath the skin, as may be desirable, as for instance, in removing a splinter or plucking out a short or broken hair. The side flanges hold the tongs from lateral displacement relative to each other when the tongs are closed and also serve an important purpose in assisting the tongs in grasping a hair or other threadlike device.
In Fig. 8 there is represented at 15 a threadlilre device which may be a hair which it is desired to pull. The hair extends transversely of the opening between the tongs and as the tongs are closed, it is held by the roughened surface of the tong 11 against the beveled portion 1a of the side flange 13. VVhen the tongs are forced together, the hair will be bent by the flange 13 about the end of the tong 11, as shown n. Fig. 9. This not only permits the clamp ing surfaces of the tongs to grip the hair but places a bend in the hair which forms a snubbi ng action making it practically impossible for the hair to slip. It is found that this construction is exceptionally convenient and efficient in plucking eyebrows or removing superfluous hair.
In addition to the operation of the device as a pair of tweezers, the side of one or both of the tongs is provided with file teeth, shown at 16, so that the sides of the imple ment may be used as a fingernail file. The end of the handle 10 is cupped, shown at 17, to constitute an ear cleaner; the cup. shaped portion 17 is perforated at 18 to provide a blackhead remover.
The instrument is preferably carried in a case similar to that shown in Figs. 3' and 1. The case may be made of leather, metal or other suitable material and is preferably provided with a restricted portion at 19 for engaging the tapered sides of the tongs to support the device so that the pointed end of the tongs will not penetrate the end of the case.
I claim 1. A. pair of tweezers having cooperating jaw members pointed at their ends, one of said aw members having flanges at the opposite edges thereof adjacent its pointed end but spaced backwardly from said end, said flanges being arranged to lie at opposite sides of the complementary jaw member when said jaw members are closed.
2. A pair of tweezers comprising jaw members pointed at their ends, one of said jaw members having flanges at opposite edges thereof, the end edges of said flanges being spaced backwardly from the pointed end of said jaw member and curved in a. concave are, said flanges being arranged to lie at opposite sides of the complementary jaw members when said j aw members are closed. I
3. A pair of tweezers comprising spring bow tongs having pointed jaw members at I the ends thereof normally held in spaced relation by the resiliency of the tongs, one of said aw members having the SldeS there of unobstructed and having a flat Contact face provided with transverse serrations the other of said aw members being pointed to between said first-named jaw member, said 10 flanges being spaced backwardly from the points of said jaw members and provided With an inclined forward edge.
In testlmony whereof I have signed my name to this specification on this 16th day of 15 March, A. D. 1926.
JOSEPH D. BRYAN.
