7 EDGE TRIMMING MACHINE KNIFE. v No. 251,725. Patented Jan. 3,1882.
NITED STATES PATENT Onnrce.
FRANKLIN MOULTON AND CHARLES M. ADAMS, OF ASHLAND, MASS.
EDGE-TRIM MING- MACHINE KNIFE.
SPECIFICATION forming'part of Letters Patent No. 251,725, dated January 3, 1882.
Application filed May 23, 1851. (ModeL) I To all whom it may concern: it
Be it known that we, FRANKLIN MoULToN and CHARLES M. ADAMS, citizens of the United States, residing at Ashland, .in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boot and Shoe Heel and Edge Trimming-Machine Knives; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and. exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making apart'of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a perspective view of our invention. Fig. 2 is a detail view of the cutting-blade and Fig. 3 is a sectional view, taken on line y 3 of Fig. l.
The present'invention has relation to certain new and useful improvements in devices to be attached to machines for trimming the heels and edges of boots and shoes and the object thereofis to providea device that will remove the feather or raw edge of the outer sole next the upper at the same time therest of the boot or shoe is being trimmed and at the same motion of the machine. This object is attained by the construction substantially as shown in the drawings and hereinafter described.
In the accompanyin gdrawin gs, Arepresents the knife-holder,having connected to itasuitable handle, B, said holder being pivoted to a stationary arm, 0, which is connected to the machine.
The knife D is formed with open slots, a, by which it is firmly held and secured to the holder A by set-screws b, the slots admitting of the adjustment of the knife by an adjusting-screw, c, which passes through a screwthreaded hole in a lug, d, projecting from the side of the holder, the end of said screw bearing against the edge of the heel of the knife. The knife D has a cutting-edge, c, and at an angle thereto a second cutting-edge, f, which comes in close contact with the projecting edgeof a plate, E, formed'on the end of the holderA. This plate has upon its under side a groove,g,just in front of the cutting-edge of the knife. This makes room for the knife to take out the rough or feather edge with the same shaving taken off when trimming the heel and outer sole.
To the outerside of the plate E is connected in anysuitable manner the guide-roller h,which runs on the upper or oounterand preventsthe knife from cutting too deep. v
'The device may be adapted for use on any or all heel and edge trimming machines; and the special form of cutting-edges of the knife enables the feather or raw edge of the outer sole next to the upper of the boot and shoe to.
be taken out at the same time the rest of it is trimmed and with the same motion of the machine.
Having now fully described our invention, What We claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The knife D, for edge trimmers, having cutting-edge e, and the cutting-edge f, arranged with relation to each other, as shown and describerhsaid knife being provided with slots on, by means of which it may be adjustably and removably connected to the holder A, substantially as and for thepurpose set forth.
2. The holder A, having plate E,with groove g,in combination with the knife D,having cutting-edges e fisubstantiallyas and for the purpose specified.
3. The holder A, pivoted to the stationary arm 0, and having plate E, with groove g, in combination with the knife D, having cuttingedges 6 f, said knife being detachably and adjnstably connected to the holder, substantially as and for the purpose described.
In testimony that we claim the above We have hereunto subscribed our names in the presence of two witnesses.
FRANKLIN MOULTON.
' CHARLES M. ADAMS.
