WELT-TRIMMER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 331,338, dated December 1, 1885.
Application filed March 25, 1885. Serial No. 160,132. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES A. SQUIRE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bradford, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in WVelt-Trimmers, of whichthe following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a means for trimming the welt of a boot or shoe, to be used in connection with a rotary cutter for trimming the edges of the soles, whereby the operation of trimming the welt and the sole can be performed at one and the same time. a
Heretofore it has been the practice to trim the welt by a hand-tool, and then to trim the sole by machinery-a process requiring two separate operations.
My invention consists of athin metal disk having a series of small cutting'edges, and se cured between a rotary cutter and a shield, which latter has a series of slots or notches corresponding with the cuttingedges of the disk, and arranged in juxtaposition with the same. I
-Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a section of a rotary sole-trimmer with the disk and shield attached. Fig. 2 represents a face View of the disk or welttrimmer. Fig. 3 is a section of the same on the line as w of Fig. 2, and Fig. 4. is a section of one of the arms of the disk on line y y of Fig. 2. Fig. 5is a front view, and Fig. 6 an edge View, of the shield. Fig. 7 represents the welt trimmer in connection with 'the shield.
My invention is designed to be used in connection with a rotary cutter for trimming the edges of boot and shoe soles, such as described and shown in Patent No. 238,303, March 1, 1881.
A in Fig. 1 represents a section of such rotary cutter attached to a shaft, S. C is the welttrimmer, and B the shield, the two being secured to the cutter A by means of the screw D on the end of shaft S. In the edge of the shield B are radial notches or recesses 12 b b b, the sides of each one of which are sharpened and beveled in opposite directions, as indicated in Fig. 5.
The shield, it will be seen, is flat on one side and convex on the opposite side.
The welt-trimmer C is composed of a thin plate of metal having four arms, as shown in Fig. 2, which constitute the cutters.
The outer edges of the cutters are turned over, forming projections or lips, which are beveled on. the sides toward the edge-cutter A. The edges 0 of the ends (I are beveled and sharpened, and constitute the trimmers. hen the parts are put together, the points of the cutters e are arranged to come nearly in contact with the opposite edges of the notches or slots 1) of the shield, as indicated in Fig. 7, a sufficient space being left for the escape or clearance of the slight portion removed from the welting of the sole.
It will be understood that the periphery of the welt-trimmer and that of the shield do not present a cutting-edge, thereby preventing any injury to the upper-of the boot or shoe. The lip of the cutter A fits under and in con tact with the tnrned-over projections d of the Welt-trimmer. between the cutter A and the shield B, all being secured to the shaft S by the screw D.
By means of my improvement I am enabled to trim the welt at the same time with and during the operation of trimming the soles, and without liability of injuring the upper.
WVhat I claim as my invention is 1. The welttrimmer C, having the turnedover lips d, beveled on the sides toward the edge-cutter A, and cutting-edges e, in combination with the shield B, having notches or.
recesses b, the sides of each of which are sharpened and beveled in opposite directions, substantially as shown and described.
2. In a welt-trimmer, the shield B, having radial notches or recesses 12, the sides of each of which are sharpened and beveled in opposite directions, as shown and described.
