SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 364,139, dated May 31, 1887. Application filed February 8, 1887. Serial No. 226,920. (No model.) I

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, EDGAR P. SEWARD, of Haverhill, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin Knives for Channeling Soles of Turned Shoes, of which the following is a specification.

This invention has for its object to provide an improved knife for channeling soles of turned shoes, adapted to cut a deep channel, which will form the edge and rand surface of the sole. Y

The invention consists in a knife having an angular cutting-edge formed to out from the tread-surface or grain side of a sole into the same at right angles with thetread-surface, and then inwardly substantially parallel with said tread-surface, the part oft-he knife that cuts from the tread-surface inwardly being beveled on its outer side, as I will now proceed to describe and claim.

Of the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 represents a front view of my improved knife. Fig. 2 represents an edge view of the same; Fig. 3, a perspective view;,Fig. 4, a section on line mm, Fig. 1; and Fig. 5 a transverse section of a sole channeled by said knife. Fig. 6 represents a sectional view 'of the knife heretofore used.

The same letters of reference indicate the same parts in all the figures.

In the drawings, a represents my improved knife, the same having a cutting-edge composed of two parts, 2 3, continuous with each other and'formcd to make a channel, a, of the form shown in Fig. 5 in the outer sole of a turned shoe, said channel extending from the grain side or tread-surface of the sole partly across the thickness of the sole at a little distance from the edge thereof, and then inwardly substantially parallel with the sides of the sole. The part 2 of the knife is beveled on the outer sidethat is, the side adjacent to the margin of the sole when the knife is cutting the channel, the opposite side being substantially parallel with the edge of the sole-so that the tendency of the knife is to cut inwardly from the edge of the sole and not to cut outwardly" toward said edge. The part 5 of the knife having the cutting-edge 3 is beveled on the side adjacent to the tread-surface, so that the tendency of this part of the knife is to cut toward the flesh side and away from the tread or grain surface. -The knife is a part of a solerounding machine of the usual (or any suit able) construction, the sole being moved while the knife is cutting the channel. I

By the described form of the part 2 of the knife, whereby said part is prevented from working toward the edge of the sole, I am enabled to cut a much deeper angular channel than heretofore, and thus form an edge on the sole of any desired thickness, the thickness being absolutely uniform, because both the rand surface and edge of the sole are formed by the knife at one operation.

I am aware that a knife formed to cut a shallow channel of the general form shown in Fig. 5 is not new; but such knife has heretofore had its part 2 beveled on the inner side, as shown in Fig. 6, so that the knife has a tendency to work toward the edge of the sole, and cannot cut a deep channel on account of thi s-tendency.

I claim The improved channel-cutting knife having the portion 2 beveled on the sidewhich is nearest the margin of the sole when the knife is in operation, and the portion 3, beveled on its upper side, as set forth.
