UNITE STATES PATENT QFFICE A JOSEPH H. WALKER, OF WORCESTER, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT in 800T ANDSHOE RA,NDS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 133,687, dated December 3, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH H. WALKER, of the city and county of Worcester and Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bands for Boots and Shoes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing which forms a part Fig. 3 represents a perspective View of a section of the old'rand partly cut; and Fig. 4 represents a cross-section of two old forms of rands placed together to illustrate how they are cut apart.
To enable those skilled in the art to which my invention belon gs to make and use the same,- I will proceed to describe it in detail.
In the old style or form of rand the edges a were perpendicular, while in my improved rand they are out upon an incline, as shown at b b, Fig. 2. The old style of rand was objectionable, since the corner 0' had to be cut or trimmed ofi" in order to make the heel of a uniform taper. This involved both a waste of leather and also a loss of time.
The Bigelow machine, patented July 5, 1870, compresses the heel upon all sides, and consequently the trimming. 011' of the rand is obviated; but I found, by the use of the machine,
that having the corner a on the rand prevent ed the extreme upper edge of the heel part of the rand from receiving complete finish and the necessary pressure to insure a perfect heel.
The rands are cut by machinery commonly employed, with exception that the feed-rolls are made in tapered form, whereby the edges a a are out upon an incline, as shown at b bin Figs. 1 and 2 of the accompanying drawing. The degree of inclination can be varied by havingfeed-rolls of different bevels.
One mode in which my said improved rand can be conveniently cut is shown and described in an application of even date herewith, in which I have applied for Letters Patent for the improvements in the machine whereby said rands can be out.
It will be understood that in applying the rands to the heel and outer sole of a boot or shoe the narrow side at is placed next to the outer sole, while the wide side 6 is placed next to the heel-lifts.
Having described my improved rand for.
