UNITED STATES triton.
PATENT AARON F. SMITH, OF LYNN, ASSIGNOR OF TWO-THIRDS TO AUGUSTUS SEAVER, OF BOSTON, AND CHARLES CURTIS, OF NEVTON, MASSA- CHUSETTS.
METHOD OF LASTING BOOTS OR SHOES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 371,713I dated October 18, 1887. Application filed June 2, 1887. Serial No. 240,031. (No model.)
.To all whom it may concern.:
Be it known that I, AARON F. SMITH, of Lynn, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in'Methods of Making Boots or Shoes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to the manufacture of boots or shoes of the kind shown in Letters Patent of the United States granted to A. Seaver, April 5, 1887, No. 369,822; The shoe described in said patent has no inner sole, and the only sole that is employed is secured to the upper, firstby cement while the upper is on the last, and then by stitches or other permanent fastenings after the upper is removed from the last. The absence of an inner sole gives the shoea very flexible bottom. It is not desirable, however, that the shank portion of the sole be as flexible as the fore part, particularly in high-heeled shoes, and it has been found that the shanks of such shoes, when made entirely without an inner sole, will not hold their shape as perfectly as is desirable. i
My invention consists in the improved method hereinafter described of making boots or shoes, whereby the desired flexibility of the fore part andstiffness ofthe shank are secured.
Of the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specilicatiom'Figure 1 represents a longitudinal section of the upper and inner sole on the last. Fig. Zrepresentsalongitudinal section of a shoe made by my improved method. Fig. 3 represents asection on line wx, Fig. 2, looking downwardly. Fig. 3u rep resents a similar section showing the edge of the upper cut away over the exposed surface of the fore part.
The sameletters of reference indicate the same parts in all the figures.
In carrying out my invention I place on the bottom of the last b a half inner sole, t, formed to cover thebottom of the heel and shank of the last, and terminating at or near the ball, leaving the fore part of the lastfbottom uncovered. The forward end of the half inner sole is reduced to a thin or knife edge, as
shown. I then place the upper a on the last and draw its edges over the bottom of the half inner sole and over the uncovered fore part of the last-bottom, using stitches o, Fig. 3, or any other suitable means to secure said edges in place, so as to retain the upper on the last without preventing the removal of the last from it. I then cement to the outer surfaces of the edges of the upper, which lie upon the bottom of the half inner sole and last, an outer sole, e, using in the cementing operation a sole-laying machine having a molded yielding sole shaped pad, which presses the cement-coated outer sole against the edges ofthe upper and molds or conforms the outer and inner soles to the shape of the bottom of the last, the molded sole and upper being held in shape by the cement connection. When the cement has sufficiently set, I remove the shoe from the last and permanently unite the outer sole, upper, and half inner sole by stitches or other permanent fastenings, d.
I prefer to eut or trim away the edge of the upper that lies on the fore part of the inner sole, as shown in Fig. 3, 'said edge being cut away -close to the line of stitches, thus removing the greater part of the edge of the upper and all of the lastingstitches c lying on the uncovered fore part of the outer sole, so that a smooth surfaceis afforded, which will greatly enhance the comfort of the shoe. The operation of cutting out the edge of the upper will be performed after the permanent connection of the outer sole to the upper, and by a suitable cutting device inserted in the shoe for that purpose. It will be seen that the shoe thus made combines the flexible fore part of the Seaver shoe above referred to with the stier shank of the ordinary shoe having a full inner sole.
I claim l. The improved method' of making unturned boots or shoes having an inner sole which extends from the heel along the shank and terminates at or near the ball, which consists in lasting the upper to the inner sole, the edge of the upper being turned over upon the bottom of said inner sole and upon 'the loottom of the fore part of the last, oernenting the outer sole to the inwardly-turned edge of the upper, and. then permanently uniting the outer sole to the inner sole and upper7 as set forth.
2. The improved method of making looots orA shoes, having an inner sole which extends from the heel along the shank and terminates at or near the ball, which consists in lasting the upper tothe inner sole, the edge of the upper being turned over upon the bottom of said inner sole and upon the bottom of the fore part of the last, cenienting the outer sole to the inwardlyturned edge of the upper, then permanently uniting the upper, inner sole, and outer sole, and nally cutting out the edges of the upper along the uncovered fore part of the outer` sole, as set forth.
In testimony whereof l have signed my name to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses, this 26thV day of May, A. D. 12587. l
AARON F. SMITH.
