Description
UNITED STATES PATENT Crema@ BENJAMIN D. BOOVER, 0F HAVERHILL, MASSACHUSETTS.
SOLE-EDGE TRIMMER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 268,858, dated December 12, 1882.
Application filed April 13, 1882. (Model.)
To all whom it may concern:
y Be it known that I, BENJAMIN D BoovER, of Haverhill, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented a newand useful Im provenientin Sole-Edge Trimmers for Boots and Shoes, of which the following is a specification. A
The object of my' invention is to combinein one tool the means oftrimming around, a beveled, or square edge, as desired, of a boot or shoe sole.
The invention consists of a guard of peculiar construction, used in connection .with another guard and a cutter, so that by a simple change of location ofthe parts the cutter caube made to trim aboot or shoe sole with a round, a beveled, or square edge.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 repiesents a side view of the tool when arranged to cut a round edge. Fig. 2 is a front view of same, looking toward the cutting-edge of the knife. Fig. 3 represents a front View of the tool arranged for cutting a beveled ed ge. Fig.`
4 shows the tool arranged for cutting asquare edge; Fig. 5, views ofthe curved knife. Fig. 6 is a view of the straight knife; Fig. 7, views ofthe back guard Fig. 8, views of the guard; Fig. 9, views of the angle-piece.
A is a handle, into which is fitted aknife or cutter, B, constructed with a curved portion at or near the upper end, as shown in Fig. 5.
C is what I term a back guard, which is curved at its upper end, as shown separately in Fig. 7, so as to allow the shavings to escape freely from the cutter, and the end c projects over, as shown, against which projecting end the cntterB abuts; or it may be fitted in a notch or groove made in the said projecting edge c. The cutter B has a slot, b, at one side, throughwhich passes a screw, d, by means of which and the washer @the guard O is secured to the cutter B, the slot admitting of au adjustment of guard C to cut more or less deep into the sole-edge. The guard C is provided with a projecting edge, g, against which the edge ofthe cutter lits.
At one side ofthe guard Cisarranged aguard, E, (Shown in detail in Fig. S.) This guard E is provided with a curved portion, h, which acts as the guard, and a straight portion,j, which serves as a guide. The guard E is secured in position by means of screws fj' entering the guard C and passing through the holese, which are made large enough to allow of the guard E being adjusted in any desired position relatively to the cutting-edge ofthe cutter B. Ou the opposite side of the back guard, C, is secured the angle-piece F, which serves as a bearing to the back of the curved cutter B.
In Fig. 3 the tool is showu'as arranged for cutting a beveled edge, in which case the straight knife or cutter B is'nsed, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4, and abuts against the under side of the portion c, or may be tittedin a notch in the same, and is held against the projection g, the position of the angle-piece F being changed so as to overlap the rear edge of the cutter B', and the guard E being in the same position as when the tool is used with the curved cutter B.
In Fig. 4 the tool is shown as arranged for cutting a straight edge, the only change required from the position shown in Fig. 3 being the reversing of the guard E, so as to bring the straight pnrtj againstor ne'ar the cuttingedge of the cutter B', as shown.
What I claim as my invention is-' y A sole-edge trimmer constructed with a back guard,0, carrying the reversible guard E, having one straight side, j, and one curved side, h, and the angle-piece F, and adapted to accommodate a straight or a curved knife, substantially as and for the purpose set forth. In testimony whereof' I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
' J'. H. ADAMS, E. PLANTA.
