Description

(Modem F. MOULTON & G. M. ADAMS.
' HEEL TRIMMER.
No. 252,243. Patented Jan. 10, 18812.
'tion.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
I FRANKLIN MOULTON AND CHARLES M. ADAMS, OF ASHLAND, MASS.
HEEL-TRIMMER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No; 252,243, dated January 10, 1882.
Application filed June 6, 1881. (ModeL) To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, FRANKLIN MOULTON and GHARLEs M. ADAMS, citizens oftheUnited States, residing at Ashland, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Heel-Trimmers; andwe do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reerence beiughad to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of relerence marked thereon.
Figure l of the drawings is a plan view of a heel-tiimming device embodying our invenguard, showing the manner ofconnecting them to the device. Fig. 3 is a detail view of the guard and guard-knife, and Fig. 4 is a perspective View of the guard.
The present invention has relation to that class of heel-trimmers for which a patent was granted to Franklin Moulton October 12,1880,-
No. 233,108, and is designed as an improvement thereon, said improvements being fully illustrated in the draw ings and hereinafter de scribed. I
In the accompanying drawings, A represents one of the many forms of heel-trimming devices, having the usual knife, B, connected in any suitable manner to the arms a b. The arm it upon its inner side is formed with a recess to receive the shank of a guard, C, said shank being made wedge shape, so as to prevent it from working out of place and more securely holding the guard in position with relation to the knife B.
The guard G has a concave face, a, so as to rest on the boot or shoe upper under the heel, and is located in close contact with the corner of the knife B, which trims the heel.
A guard-knife, I), is connected to the guard C at an angle thereto, said knife being dovetailed to fit within a dovetailed recess, d, a screw, 6, holding the knife stationary therein.
The edge of the knife D is located directly under the edge of the concave face'c, this edge or portion of the guard running between the outer sole and the upper, thereby allowing the knife to take out the feather-edge on the outer Fig. 2 is a detail view of the knives and tied.
sole next to the upper at the same time the heel is trimmed by the knife B, which not only saves time but takes thefeather-edge off much neater and truer. The edge or point of the knife D, being under the lower edge of the guard G, protects the edge or point from cutting the upper.
The bevel of the knife can be ground so as to take out a large shaving and make a deep groove, or a small shaving and alight or shallow groove, or both ends of the knife can be ground, one end for a deep groove and the other for a light or shallow groove.
In case the knife is worn out or breaks off at the end it can be ground up and placed in position the same as when new, the knife being removed from the guard by loosening the screw c,which will allowthe knife to he slipped outof the dovetail recess (1.
The wedge-shaped shankfof the gage O is formed with an elongated slot, 9, for the reception of a screw, h, the end thereof passing through the slot and engaging with a screwthreadcd lint, i, by which means the guard is held in place and at the same time admitting of its adjustability.
Having now fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a heel-trimming machine, the combination, with the knife B, of the guard G, having the concave face 0, said guard being adjustably connected to its support and carrying the adjustable knife I), substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The guard 0, having concave face 0 and wedge-shaped shank f, with elongated slot 9, for attaching it to the arm a, the dovetail recess d, for connecting thereto the guard-knife D, substantially as and for the purpose speci- In testimony that we claim the above we have hereunto subscribed our names in the presence of two witnesses.
