UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
@HARLEY OTTO EBERLEIN, OF SHAWANO, WISCONSIN, ASSIGNOR TO HIM' V SELF AND MICHAEL G. EBERLEIN, OF SAME PLACE.
CORN-CUTTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N o. 664,627, dated. December 25, 1900.
Application filed September 5, 1900. Serial No. 29,043. (No model.)
To /LZ/ whom t may concern.-
Be it known that I, @HARLEY OTTO EBEE- LEIN, acitizen of the United States, and a residentofShawano,in thecountyofShawanoaud Slate of Wisconsin, have invented a new and Improved Corn-Cutter, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to improvements in devices for cutting corn; and the object is to provide a simple device of this character that may be securely fastened to a persons boot or shoe and by means of which a person without stooping may cut the cornstalks close to the ground, leaving a short stubble, and, further, to so construct the device that it will not interfere with a persons walking.
I will describe a corn-cutter embodying my invention, and then point out the novel features in the appended claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specioation, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the iigures.
Figure l is a perspective View of a corn-eutter embodying my invention and showing the same as attached to a shoe. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the device. Fig. 3 is a section on the line t 0c of Fig. 2, and Fig. 4 is a section on the line y y of Fig. 2.
The corn-cutter comprises a metal plate l, longitudinally curved to conform to the sole of a shoe or boot. For convenience in Walking the device should be made as light as possible. Therefore I make it of thin sheet metal, in which longitudinally-extended ribs 2 are formed. An extension-plate 3 is adjnstably connected to the rear end of the foot-plate 1. This extension-plate is provided with a slot l, through which a screw 5 passes and engages with a nut 5, The plate is prevented from lateral movement by downwardly-turned lugs 6, which extend into the channels formed by the depressed ribs 2. The rear end of the extension-plate is turned downward and is designed to engage against the inner surface of the heel of the shoe or boot, and near the front end of the plate l is an upwardly-turned lug 7, designed to engage with the sole of the shoe at the toe. By thus engaging the heel and toe of the shoe the device will be prevented from longitudinal movement while cutting corn.
The device is to be held on the boot or shoe by means of a toe-strap 8, an instep-strap 9, and a heel-strap l0.
Attached to the front end of the plate l is a cutter-blade ll. This cutter-blade is made removable from the plate for convenience in sharpening. Preferably the cutting edge of this blade will be longitudinally concaved, as indicated in the drawings. At the inner side and at the front or toe portion of the plate l is a rotating disk l2. This disk 12 is in line with the blade ll and is designed to prevent said blade from coming in contact with the foot of a person opposite to that upon which the device is secu red, thus preventing 'any possible cutting of the other shoe or boot.
In operation the operator takes hold of the cornstalks and then by forcing his foot forward against the blade 1I cuts through' the stalks near the ground. As the plate l is 1ong-itudinally concaved to conform to the sole of the shoe or boot and as the whole device is very light, it will not interfere with a persons Walking. Y
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. Acorn-cuttingdevice,comprisingametal foot-plate having downwardly-pressed ribs, an extension-plate having a slot formed in it, a screwpassing through said slot and into the foot-plate, downward extensions on the front end of said extension-plate and engaging in the channels formed by the depressed ribs, and a 'cutting-blade on the front end of said foot-plate, substantially as specified.
2. Acorn-cutting device, comprisingafootplate, a cutting-blade on the toe end thereof, and a rotary disk on the plate in line with the blade and located at one end thereof, substantially as specified.
3. A corn-cutting device, comprising a footl name to this speeication in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.

plate, an adjustable extension-plate on one end thereof, fastening-straps attached to the foot-plate, a cutting blade removably attached to the front end of said foot-plate, and a roller 5 attached to the foot-plate at one end of the blade, substantially as specified.
In ltestimony whereof I have signed my
