This invention relates to a guard for the heel trimming knife of a machine used in shops for trimming lifts, replaced'on shoes.

The principal objects of the invention are to provide an effective guard for the rotating knife which trims the convex surface of the lift; to provide this guard with means by which it can be adjusted relative to the rotating trimming knife, both longitudinally and laterally, and to provide means on the guard for protecting the covering on the heel above the lift from being engaged in any way by the cutter and thereby damaged.

The invention is shown as applied to a machine of well known type having a driving shaft III provided on the end thereof with a heel trimming cutter Il adapted to operate on the lift of a heel of a shoe in the manner shown in Fig. 3. 'I'his cutter, of course, is old and operates in the usual way. The main diiiiculty that this invention is designed to avoid is the accidental slipping of this cutter above the lift I2 and cutting into the covering I3 with which the main part of the heel is covered.

This guard comprises a stationary sleeve I4 through which the shaft I0 of the cutter I I passes and in which it is centered. This sleeve I4 is mounted in bearings on the machine frame I6 and is provided with a longitudinal slot I1` for oil. On the end of this sleeve is a head I8 which extends to the rear surface of the trimming cutter I I and is slightly greater in diameter than this cutter.

On this head is mounted a main guard 20. This guard is provided with longitudinal slots in which screws 2l are located for the purpose of setting the guard 20 in adjusted positions on the head I8. This guard 2D extends throughout more than a half circle and guards the back of the cutter. It has a flat end plate 22 whichl extends throughout just about a half circle and closes the end ofthe guard to that extent but it has a semicircular opening. This end plate22 is provided with two parallel opposite tangential slots 23 for receiving a pair of fastening screws 24 for securing to this top plate a second flat semi-circular plate 25 in adjusted position. 'I'he convex surface of the edge of this plate 25 is exposed between the longitudinal edges 26`of the guard 20, which edges constitute the extreme boundary of that guard and leave a space on the side toward the Work. The plate 25`is adjusted preferably so that it furnishes a guard for engaging the covering I3 on the heel of the shoe being operated upon, thus keeping the cutter away from the covering at that point. 'This constitutes an important feature of the guard and it is adjustable to whatever position may be necessary.

Another feature of the guard consists of an arcuate plate 28 which may be of sheet metal and is held in position by -two screws 29 extending into the headV I8.` This plate preferably is provided with two slots 30 arranged longitudinally so that it can be adjusted in an axial direction. The purpose of this plate is to engage the bottom of the lift as shown in Fig. 3 and thus locate the shoe in proper position with respect to the cutter and the guard plate 25.

From this it Will be seen that the guarding device is very simple, that it accurately locates the heel and lift, absolutely prevents the cutter from digging into the covering I3 above the lift, and that these parts are all readily adjustable for different shoes. In adjusting, the screws simply have to be loosened `and the various elements can be adjusted andfastened again without removing the screws or getting the parts out of proper position. The device is designed particularly for ladies shoes and is shown as operating upon a ladys shoe but the principle is capable of general application. y

Although I have illustrated and described only one -form of the invention I am aware of the fact that modifications can be made therein by any person skilled in the art without departing from the scope of the invention as expressed in the claim. Therefore I do not wish to be limited in this respect otherwise than as set forth in the claim but what I do claim isz- As an article of manufacture, a heel trimmer guard comprising a head, a convex semi-cylindrical guard fixed to said head and longitudinally adjustable with respect thereto, an arcuate plate kmounted on the opposite side of said head and longitudinally adjustable thereon, independently of the adjustment of the guard, for engaging the bottom of a lift to be trimmed, and means independent of said plate carried by said guard for engaging the covering of the heel above the lift and protecting the same from the cutter.
