BENJAMIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Beverly, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain In provements in Sole-Slotting Machines, of which the following' description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specication, like reference characters on the drawings indicating like parts in the several figures.
rl`his invention relates to machines for operating upon the soles of boots and slices and is herein illustrated in connection with a machine for producing a transverse groove or slot across a sole which is to be used in a shoe hai/'ing a spring heel.
in the manufacture cf turn slices having spring heels it is customary to cut a slot or groove across the flesh side of the sole at the junction of the heel and shank portions to receive the beveled end of the spring lift and to facilitate the bending of the sole at that point; and the general object of the present invention is to provide a simple and effective power-actuated machine for accomplishing this result.
Accordingly one feature of the present invention consists in the provision with a knife and a feed roll for advancing a piece of stock thereto of a yieldingly mounted idle roll for supporting the stock during the feeding operation. And 'preferably the feed roll comprises aV section or Y ember the periphery of which corresponds in outline to the outline of the edge of the knife; and the idle supporting roll is adjustable toward and from the feed roll. Y With such construction the driving mechanism for the supporting roll which would necessarily be of a complicated nature in order to provide for adjustment of said roll is dispensed with, and at the same time pieces of stock of di'erent thickness may be operated upon.
In order to facilitate the ease with which the cutting operation is performed another feature ofthe invention consists in the provision in a machine of the class described of a grooving knife the axis of which is arranged at an oblique angle to the line of feed of the stock: and in order to provide clearance for said knife the angles of the bevelsV force required to feed the stock forward' will be less than would otherwise be necessary. f
Another feature of the invention consists in the provision in a machine of the class described of a knife, means for adjusting said knife and a retaining means for holding said knife in place, the parts being so constructed and arranged that the knife may be removed from the machine and replaced therein without disturbing said adjustment. ln the illustrated embodiment the knifel is fixed to a cylindrical holder which may be adjusted angularly in a socket by a rack, and longitudinally by a screw which is carried by a retaining cap, said cap being threaded upon the end of the socket.
lVhen, therefore, the retaining cap has been unscrewed, the cap, screw, holder and knife may be drawn out of the socket. This is particularly convenient when it is desired to sharpen the knife, since it is evident that after such sharpening the parts can be replaced without .A disturbing the adjusting members, it being necessary merely to screw the retaining cap once more into place.
These and other features of the invention including certain details of construction and combinations of parts will be explained in connection with an illustrative machine and will be pointed out in the appended claims.

Extending laterally from the head ,l is a bracket 3 having a bore which receives the stem 5 of a yoke between the arms 7 of which is mounted a stock supporting;- roll 9, said roll being rotatable on a shaft l0 which is held in the arms of the yoke. The arms 7 'of the voke areprovided with extensions, oneof whichpis shown at 11, and these eX- tensions uphold a supporting table 13 which carries adjustablyl mounted thereon an edge gage 15, said ga ge being curved downwardly Y at its rear portion and being provided with an extension 17 which engages the upper surface of the margin of the sole during its passage through the machine. Inthe illustrated embodiment'of the inknife is substantially Vfshaped, and hence the central section or member39 is frusto-conical. Because of the shape of the section 39 the skiving which is removed by the knife is crowded between said knife and section only along a line determined by the Yintersection ofthe plane of the base of said section with-thesurface of the stock; and consequently the knife mayV be set close in toward the bite of the section 39 without causing objectionable the skiving which is being removed.
Attention is here directed to the simplicity of the feeding .mechanism- The stock is held firmly against the upper feed roll `by the idle roll 9 andthe table 13, the outer sections or members 35 and37 engaging the stockat each side of the knife andthe 'cen tral section engaging the skiving as it is being removed from the stock. It is thus possible to cause the knife to make clean uniform cuts without the necessity of providing a more or less complicated mechanism for rotating the adjustable lower roll.
The head1 of the machine is providedat its upper portion with flanges 41 which form binding of vertical guideways in which are `mounted theslides 48 of a carrier 45, said carrier being provided with a cut-away portion spanned by a cross bar 47 through which is threaded an adjusting screw 49, this adjusting screw being rotatable in a flange 51 of the head but held from longitudinal'movement with respect thereto, a lock nut 53 be.- ing provided vto insure that the carrier 45 shall be held securely in adjusted position.
The carrier 45 is formed with a cylindrical socket 55 having a slot 57 communicating with the interior thereof and having formedV on its outer end exterior 'screw threads 59. Adapted to coperate with the screw threads 59 is a cap 61,7and rotatably mounted in the cap but held from longitudinal movement with respect thereto is an adjusting screw 63 provided with a knurled head 65. The threaded end of this screw engages the rear end of a cylindrical knife holder.67 and serves to adjust said knife holder longitudi- Y threadedthrough the end of the boss, a'lock n nut 77 being provided to hold the vrack in adjusted position.

By referring to Fig. Q, it will be seen i that the point of intersection of the cutting edges 85 and 89 is concentric with lthe knife To facilitatev the cutting operation Vthe ,holder 67. It is thus possible to adjust the lao aXis of the socket 55 is arranged at an oblique angle to the bite of the rolls and consequently to the direction in which the stock is fed, and in order to provide proper clearance the rib 83 of the knife adjacent the upright edge 85 is beveled as at 91, the eXtension 87 being provided with a bevel on its under side as shown in dotted lines in F ig. fi, both of which bevels lie in planes parallel to the direction in which the stock is fed. In the use of the machine the handheld 23 is rotated to accommodate the machine to the thickness of the stock which is to be operated upon, and the screw t9 is `turned to regulate the depth of cut. The longitudinal adjustment of the knife is accomplished by turning the screw 63 and thefangular adjustment by turning the rack 7l. rihese parts together with the edge gage 15 having been adjusted, power is applied to the shaft 33, and the stock is operated upon as shown in lfig. 3 wherein the stock is indicated at 93 andthe portion being removed at 95.
Although the invention has been set forth in connection with a particular machine, it should be understood that the invention is not limited in the scope of its application to the particular machine shown and described.
Having'thus described the invention, what 1 claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
1. A machine of the class described having, in combination, a knife having its edge formed to cut a V-shaped groove in a piece of stock, means for supporting said stock, and means for feeding said stock, said feeding means comprising a Vroll having a central section to engage the portion of the stock which is removed by the knife and spaced sections arranged to engage the uncut stock on both sides of said knife.
2. A machine of the class described having, in combination, a knife, a feed roll, means for rotating said feed roll, an idle supporting roll, a supporting table, said roll and table being adjustable in unison, and yielding means for supporting said roll and table.
3. A machine of the class described having, in combination, a knife having its edge shaped to cut a groove in a piece of stock, means for supporting said stock, and means for feeding said stock, said feeding means comprising members for engaging the stock at each side of the knife and a member having `its periphery formed to correspond to the shape of the knife edge and arranged to engage that portion of the stock which is removed by the knife.
4. A machine of the class described having, in combination, a knife having its edge shaped to cut a groove in a piece of stock, yielding means for supporting said stock,
and means for feeding said stock, said feeding means comprising members for engaging the stock at each side of the knife and a member having its periphery formed to correspond to the shape of the knife edge and arranged to engage that portion of the stock which is removed by the knife.
5. A machine of the class described having, in combination, grooving knife, a stock supporting table, a stock supporting roll carried by said table, a feed roll comprising end members arranged to engage the stock on each side of the knife and a central member having its periphery formed to correspond to the shape of the edge of the knife and arranged to engage that portion of the stock which is removed by said knife, yielding means for causing said feed roll and supporting roll to approach each other, and means for actuating said feed roll.
6. A machine of the class described having, in combination, a feed roll for advancing a piece of stock, means for rotating said roll, a yieldingly sustained idle supporting roll, a grooving knife having its axis arranged obliquely with respect to the direction in which said stock is fed, means for adjusting said knife vertically, means for adjusting said knife angularly about its axis, and means for adj ustingv said knife longitudinally.
A machine of the class described having, in combination, a feed roll, means for rotating said roll, a supporting roll yieldingly held, and a grooving knife having beveled edffes, the aXis of which is arranged obliquely to the direction in which the stock is fed by said rolls, the angles of the bevels which form the edges of said knife being such that said bevels lie in planes parallel to the direction in which said stock is fed.
8. A machine of the class described having` feed rolls for advancing a piece of stock to be operated upon and means for actuating one of said rolls in combination with a knife having' its aXis oblique to the line of feed, a carrier by which said knife is supported, means for adjusting said knife angularly about its axis and means for raising and lowering said carrier.
9. A machine of the class described having means for feeding a piece of stock to be operated upon in combination with a member having a socket, a knife holder capable of longitudinal and angular adjustment fitted in said socket, a knife carried by said holder and means acting upon said holder for moving the holder angularly while maintaining the longitudinal adjustment.
10. A machine of the class described having stock feeding mechanism in combination with a grooving knife, a holder by which said 'knife is carried, means for adjusting said holder angularly about its axis, means for adjusting said holder longitudinally, and a holder-retaining member by Which one of said means isv carried.

A machine of the class described having means for feeding a piece of stock to be operated upon in combination With a carrier provided with a socket, a knife holder slidable in said socket,V a knife carried by said holder, means for adjusting said holder angularly, a removable retaining member, and means engaging said member for adjusting said holder longitudinally.

A machineof the class described having means for feeding a piece of stock to be operated upon in combination With a carrier provided With a cylindrical socket, a knife holder, a knife carried by said holder, a member movable to adjust said holder angularly, a second member movable to adjust said holder longitudinally, and a retaining cap the construction being such that upon disconnecting the cap, the holder and With it the knife and one of the adjusting members may be removed from the machine While maintaining the position of the other adjusting member.
