Application November 25, 1946, Serial No. 712,219
6 Claims. (01.155-141) l This invention relates to improvements in foldlngchairs;
An object of the invention is to provide an improved form of folding chair having integrally formed rear supporting legs and backside frame members, with a combined seatand frame hinged at its rear between said rear supporting legs and pivotally supporting the front chair legs, and latch mechanisms at the four corners of said chair seat being automatically lockable when said chair is set up.
Another object of the invention is to provide an improved form of folding chair having integrally formed rear supporting legs and back-- side frame members, with a seat and seat frame hinged to and between said rear supporting legs and pivotally supporting the front chair legs, together with cooperating latch mechanisms at the four corners of said chair being automatically lockable when said chair is set up, and the unitary means for simultaneously releasing all of said latch mechanisms when said chair is to be folded.
A further object of the invention is to provide an improved folding chair construction with four point locking mechanisms therefor being highly efficient in operation, and relatively inexpensive to manufacture and produce.
Other objects will appear as the description proceeds.
In the accompanying drawings which form a part of this application,
Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view taken through the improved folding chair when set up;
Figure 2 is a side elevation of the improved folding chair showing the same in folded position;
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken on the line 3--3 of Figure 1;
Figure 4 is a fragmentary sectional view taken on the line 44 of Figure 3, and
Figure 5 is a fragmentary sectional view taken on the line 5-5 of Figure 4.
Like characters of reference are used throughout the following specification and the accom panying drawings to designate corresponding parts.
In carrying out the invention, there is provided an improved form of folding chair having integrally formed back legs I and backside frame members 2 extending upwardly therefrom as continuations thereof.
A substantially square seat frame is formed with opposite side members 3 and 4 and with connecting front and rear members 5 and 6 respectively. The angle-iron stop braces I and 8 are secured by screws 9 to the rear inner surfaces,
of said side frame members 3 and 4, being extended upwardly tolie next to theinner surfaces of the chair backsideframe members 2,-being pivotally supported upon the headedbearing .pintles l0 secured in the inner surfaces of said,
members 2. i a
The angle brackets II are fixedly secured by the screws l2 to the inner surfaces of the front legs 13 of the chair at their upper ends, and are pivotally connected at their opposite ends upon the pivot pins I4 attached to the inner forward surfaces of the side frame members 3 and 4.
Rearwardly extending longitudinal locking slots l5 are formed in said angle brackets II to slidably receive the transversely extending operation or latch release bar l6 for locking the front legs when in open position, said bar being normally urged in a rearward direction by means of the coil springs I! received in the bores H3 in the front frame members 5 with their opposite ends resiliently engaging the forward edges of said latch release bar It.
Recesses l9 are formed in the forward edges of the back legs I, and the headed keeper studs are secured in the inner walls of said recesses to cooperate with and receive the notches, 2| formed in the rear ends of the side locking bars 22, which are pivoted on the pivot pins or members 23 secured to the inner surfaces of said side frame members 3 and 4, when said chair is set up in position for use. i
The front ends of the side locking bars 22 are twisted to provide the forwardly extending cam fingers 24 with their depending cam ends 25 adapted to extend over the latch release bar It for retaining the same in the locking slots l5 when the chair is set up, and also acts to release bar 22 from the keeper studs 20 as the bar It is pressed to release the locks. Coil springs are disposed over the cam ends 25 of the bars 22 for holding the bar 22 onto the bar I6 to secure the lock at 20.
Suitable connecting braces 26 will be disposed between the rear and front legs of the chair, and will be mounted upon the pins 2! and 28, respectively, for pivotal movement with respect to said chair legs.
From the foregoing description, it will be apparent that there has been devised a highly efficient form of folding chair with four point locking means therefor which will be automatically locked when said chair is set up for use, and a single lock releasing bar which will be manually operable for simultaneously releasing all four latch mechanisms when the chair is to be folded.
While the preferred embodiment of the instant invention has been illustrated and described, it will be understood that it is not intended to limit the scope of the invention thereto, as many minor changes in detail of construction may be resorted to without departure from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent oi"- the United States is: f
1. A folding chair having a back and 'supportin legs therefor, a seat having front, rear and side.
cured to said front legs and pivotally secured to said side members of said seat, a latch release-bar 3. The combination of claim 1 wherein said second-mentioned means includes lateral pins extending from said back legs and notches in said- ,extendingarfromgsaid b i klegs and notches in saidlockihg' bars for receiving said pins.
1 U 6. The combination of claim 5 and resilient members, means for hinging said seat to said back legs, front legs, brackets having;slotsfigedlwsee;
means urging said locking bars into locking en- Lmgagement with. said latch release bar and said resiliently urged into locking-engagement with said slots, locking bars pivoted intermediate their ends to said side members of said seatymeans-associated with one of theiends of said locking bars means urging said locking bars into ,lockingi;en.-
