Application November 8, 1943, Serial No. 509,358
2 Claims. 1
This invention relates to improvements in infants folding seat attachments for toilets wherein a childs toilet seat provided with a folding back-rest and arms is disposed upon a toilet seat for adults.
An object of the invention is to afford a childs toilet seat having a folding superstructure including a back-rest having braces pivotally connected with the seat and provided with means that engages the seat to stop backward swing of the back-rest relative thereto upon reaching operative position, and means on the seat to lock the back-rest in said position.
Another object of the invention is to afiord a seat structure in which is included a seat, a backrest structure connected with the seat for pivotal movement thereon, and means on the back-rest structure and seat that has clamping engagement with said seat to lock the back-rest in operative position thereon.
And a further object of the invention is to provide in connection with a seat a back-rest having braces therefor pivoted to said seat, each brace having a seat-engaging foot to limit backward swing of said braces, and means on said seat to engage said feet upon engagement with the seat to thus lock the back-rest in operative position relative to said seat.
Other objects and advantages of the invention appear in the following description.
An illustrative embodiment of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Fig, l is a side elevational view in section showing a chair structure in which the invention is incorporated;
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary rear elevational view projected from Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of one of the backrest braces used in the structure; and
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of a latch for locking the brace and seat together.
The illustrative embodiment of the invention consists of a seat I having an opening 2 therein as usually provided in toilet seats. To each side of the seat adjacent the rear end thereof is secured a brace 3 by means of a pivot screw 4 upon which the brace has swinging movement, and said brace has an inturned foot 5 that has direct contact with the adjacent top surface of the seat by which the backswing of the brace is stopped upon reaching operative position. Between the upper ends of the braces is secured a back-rest 6 having movement therewith relative to the seat.
Pivotally connected with the back-rest are arm-rests I that are supported at their forward end portions by links 8 that have pivotal connections with said arm-rests and the seat, the backrest, arm-rests and links being arranged to fold forwardly upon the seat, as in the usual manner.
To the rear end of the seat is attached a spring latch 9 having a flat base [0 that underlies and is secured to the seat and an upright free end portion II that normally rests against the rear face of the seat. The upright end of the latch has an opening l2 therein for the reception of a lug I3 that extends rearwardly from the foot 5 and protrudes into the opening IS in the corresponding latch which occurs when the back-rest is moved into its operating position. By this arrangement the rear end of the seat is tightly clamped between the feet 5 and bases [0 of the latches upon engagement of the lugs in the latch openings. Thus the feet are firmly secured against the top of the seat and the braces secured firmly in back-rest supporting position.
In use, the attachment is positioned on an adult toilet seat (not shown) in the usual manner. As the back-rest and arm-rest structure is unfolded the feet 5 on the braces 3 are automatically engaged by the latches and thus the back-rest is locked in upright position. The latches are disengaged by applying thumb pressure rearwardly against the projecting free end portions thereof. When the latches are freed from the foot lugs l3, backward swing of the folding parts is averted by contact of the feet 5 with the seat, while permitting forward movement of said parts to folded position.
Variations from the particular construction above disclosed may readily be made by exercise of engineering skill without departure from the spirit or scope of the invention, and the following claims are intended to be inclusive of such variations.
What I claim is:
1. In an attachment for toilets, where a ch'ilds seat has a folding back-rest structure and means to hold said back-rest in operating position, a seat, a back-rest having braces therefor connected with the seat for pivotal movement, each brace having a foot that overlies and bears on said seat when the back-rest is swung rearwardly to operative position, and a latch for each foot having a base secured to the bottom of the seat and an upright free end portion that has locking engagement with the corresponding foot when the back-rest is moved into said selected position.
2. A childs toilet seat attachment for an adult toilet, said attachment consisting of a ch'ilds seat provided with a back-rest structure pivotally connected with said seat, said structure having feet that have contact with the top face of said seat to stop backward movement of said backrest upon reaching operative position, and latch members secured to the bottom face of said seat that engage said feet when in contact with said seat and lock the back-rest in said operative position.
