C. R. PRICE.
FENCE POST.
Patented Dec. 20,1881.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE;
CHARLES R. PRICE, OF MARENGO, IOWA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-THIRD TO CHRISTIAN BEATY, OF SAME PLACE.
FENCE-POST.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 251,282, dated December 20, 1881.
Applicationfiled September 16, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CHARLES R. PRIcE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Marengo, in the county of Iowa and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fence-Posts and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention consists in certain details of construction in fence-posts, as hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation of the post. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the lower section thereof, and Fig. 3 is a reverse elevation of the post.
The post comprises the two sections A A,
one hinged or pivoted to the other, the section A consisting of right-angularly arranged or intersecting plates or boards 12 0, one designed to be tapered considerably and the other but slightly toward the bottom to facilitate the insertion of the post into the soil. The upper end of section A is adapted to extend up into a vertical slot, H, in the lower end of section A, to effect, in connection with other means presentlydescribed, the hinging or pivoting of the sections together. I
The pin or bar e unites the sections of the post but, as equivalent thereto, a screw-bolt may be employed for this purpose, secured by a nut.
The removable pin or bar f is designed to lock the fence in an upright or vertical position, and it is readily removable from the orifices f, and, when withdrawn, the fence may belowered to the ground for the purpose of driving stock in or out of the inclosure. This construction also greatly facilitates the removal of the posts and fence when desirable, as the lower sections of the posts can readily be lifted out of the ground by placing fulcrums under the lower part of the upper sections or joints and using the upper sections or top of the posts as levers.
The upper sections, A, of the posts of my fence are composed of the flaring parts h h, which are converged near the bottom thereof to form parallel vertical sides, in order that a part of such sections may be removed and the vertical slots H be thus formed therein. Itis also provided with the oblique slots K K, which terminate at bottom in the horizontal apertures K K for reception of the bars or wires L L, and these are rigidly secured in position by means of the wedges M M.
It will be noticed that the insertion of the wire or bars is expeditiously effected by slipping it down through the oblique slots K, terminating in the wire or bar holding apertures or sockets.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A fence-post composed of sections A and A, section A having the flaring parts h hconverging at the lower part of such sections, where it is provided with a vertical slot, H, in combination with section A and pin or barf, substantially as shown, and for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
CHARLES R. PRICE.
