N ITED STATES- PATENT OFFICE.
FREDERICK G. LEIBE, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY.
PORTABLE WRITING-DESK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 251,255, dated December 20, 1881.
Application filed July 5, 1881.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FREDERICK G. LEIBE, a resident of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in. Portable Writing-Desks; and I do hereby declare the following to be afull, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part this specification.
The object of thisinvention is to increase the convenience and usefulness of the writingdesk; and it consists in the arrangement and conformation of parts, all of which will be hereinafter fully set forth, and embodied in the several clauses of the claim.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, in which the several letters of reference indicate like parts in each of the several figures of the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of an open portable writing-desk, illustrating the manner of using the improvements. Figs. 2 and 3are sectional views of portions of the device, showing details of construction and further illustrating the operation thereof. Said sectional views are taken through lines 3 and a, respectively, of Fig. 4, which last figure is more particularly a front elevation of the cover of thedesk, showing thehereinafter-mentioned folding leaves in a closed position, and also showing certain other details more clearly.
In carrying out my'invention I construct the body A and cover B of the portable writingdesk in substantially the manner shown, and within said cover, upon the partition a, secured upon the back wall of the cover, running from side to side of the same, are hinged the folding desk-leaves O O, in such a manner as that when said cover is open to a vertical position, as shown, the said desk-leaves may be unfolded and allowed to rest upon the body in an inclined position.
Upon the under side of the portion C of the desk are secured wedge-shaped supports b, which rest upon the body A, or, as in the case shown, a tray, 0, arranged within the same.
(No model.)
Said supports 1) project, asshown in Fig.2, and are thus adapted to give firmness to the leaves 0 O, as will be apparent.
The space within the cover B, back of the partition to, is subdivided by a partition, d, into apartments D E, the latter being considerably smaller than the former, and adapted to hold an ink-well e e and revent the same from moving laterally therein. The space or apartment E is adapted for paper, letters, &c., a rack or other means being provided for the purpose of holding the same.
The ink-well e e is an L- shaped vessel, the portion 6 of the chamber therein being'of sufficient capacity to receive the ink when the cover is closed, rendering a cork or stopper unnecessary. The upper portion of the said L- shaped ink-well lies flush with the upper edge of the partition a. Upon the under side of the deskleaf 0, flush with the edge opposite said well, is secured a projecting stay, 9, which, when the desk-leaves U C are folded, engages with the said upper portion of the ink-Well and holds the same securely, preventing said well from being displaced when the cover is closed, as will be well understood upon reference to the drawings.
The upper edge of the partition a, in front of the chamber E, is grooved or recessed, as shown in Fig. 3, sut'ficiently to be adapted to receive a pen or pencil, and the folding leaves 0 O, lying over said receptacle, (lettered h,) hold the same therein when the desk is closed.
Upon the'inner side walls of the cover B, in front of the partition a, are secured cleats n, which are adapted to hold said partition a more securely in place, and act as supports for the unfolded desk-leaf O to rest upon, the upper edge of supports being beveled for the purpose, as shown more clearly in Figs. 2 and 3.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and wish to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination, with the body and'cover of a portable Writing-desk, of the partition on, having folding leaves secured thereto, a partition, (I, forming, in connection with parts a and B, an ink-well-receiving chamber, the ink-well, and a stay, g, projecting from beneath said folding leaves, and adapted to engage with erating substantially as herein set forth and 10 shown.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 15th day of June, 1881.
FEEDERioK e. 'LEIBE.
