SAMUEL K. DARROYV, OF POUGHKEEPSIE, NEW YORK.
COMBINED FiRE-SCREEN AND DESK.
SPECIFIGATIQN forming part of Letters Patent No. 319,198, dated June 2,1885.
Application filed September 8, 1884.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL K. DARRow, a citizen of the United States, residing at Poughkeepsie, in the county of Dutchess and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined FireScreens and Desks; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a vertical sec tional view of my device. Fig. 2 is a rear view of the same, and Fig. 3 is a front view.
This invention has relation to convertible fire-screens; and it consists in the construc tion and novel arrangement of devices,as hereinafter set forth, and pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings, the letter A designates an upright frame, the sides B of which are parallel and terminate below in broad feet C. These sides are connected above by the crossbar D, and near their lower ends by the bar E. The design of the frame may be as ornamental as taste may require.
F indicates a shallow desk of sufficient breadth to extend between the side uprights, B, from one to the other. To its back G are secured pivots or trunnions H, which bear in seats a in the wear-plates b, which are secured to the inner sides of the uprights B. In this manner the desk is pivoted to the uprights. When in horizontal position, it rests on ledges c, which are provided on the inner sides of the uprights in front, as shown. In this po sition it maybe used for writing purposes, the feet of the frame being sufficiently broad to hold the desk steady. The desk may be chambered and provided with partitions extending to the top (1, which is hinged. In this manner compartments may be formed for bold mg paper and envelopes, so that they will not become jumbled together when the desk is (No model.)
turned into the upright position. Arecess, e, is made in the top of the desk, near its back, in which is located a trough or holder, K, which is pivoted at its ends to bearings in the ends of said recess, as shown at Z. This trough is designed to hold the ink and pens or the ink only. Its weight is mainly below the level of its pivots, so that it will always swing downward and maintain its level position, prevent ing the ink from being spilled. To the bottom of the desk is'secured a screen, M, which may be ornamented by painting, embroidery, or in any other manner, according to taste. W'hen the desk is turned up between the uprights, this screen is presented to view. A border, a, is usually extended around the screen to protect it. A stop, 8, prevents the desk from swinging backward beyond the upright position, and slide-bolts serve to hold the desk Vertical when engaged in bearings of the side bars of the frame; or spring-catches may be employed for this purpose.
Having described this invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
1. The combination, with the frame having the uprights B, of the desk F, pivoted thereto, and provided at its upper inner end with the transverse recess 6, and the trough pivoted within the said recess, whereby the said desk may be turned up over the trough and secured in position, substantially as specified.
2. The combination, with the main frame, of the desk pivoted to the uprights B thereof, and provided at its inner upper side with a transverse curvilinear recess, 6, the weighted pivoted trough K, having a conformable eX terior surface, and devices for holding the desk in a closed and open position, respectively, as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
SAMUEL K. DARROW'.
