CONVERTIBLE CHAIR.

SPECIFICATION forming part Of Letters Patent No. 491,602, dated February 14, 1893. Application filed March 21,1892. Serial No. 425,848. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, CATHERINE SCHULTE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Port Huron, in the county of St. Clair and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in'Convertible Chairs; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference beinghad totheaccompanyingdrawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

This invention relates to new and useful improvements in convertible chairs, and consists in a certain construction and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter fully set forth, the essential features of which being pointed out particularly in the claim.

The object of the invention is to provide a chair, that may be used ordinarily as a rocking chair, and which is readily convertible into a support or rest upon which to offer prayer, at which time the chair is automatically locked to prevent its rocking, the bottom of said chair being provided with a receptacle in which may be contained the textbooks for such service. This object is attained by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1, is a side elevation of my improved chair, when in position for offering prayer thereon. Fig. 2, is an enlarged central vertical section through the chair in the position shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3, is a like section through the chair in its normal position.

Referring to the letters of reference, A, indicates the frame of the chair, which is provided with an upholstered bottom B. The rear rail a of said bottom, is hinged to a fixed cross-rail e of the frame, as shown at c. The front rail f of the bottom is provided with a shoulder 71 that is adapted to bear upon the front cross -rail (1 of the frame, by which means the bottom is supported at its forward edge. Pivoted to the rear rail to of the bottom, at each end thereof, is a depending rod h, the lower end of which is pivoted to the brace arm C which is in turn pivoted at o to the rocker D, whereby, when the hinged bottom is raised to a vertical position, the rods h draw upon the brace-arms C and throw their rear ends downward, so as to brace the chair and prevent its rocking, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The bottom I3, of the chair is hollow, and is divided by a central partition 11, forming receptacles for books that are closed by the sliding panels a, it. These receptacles being readily accessible when the bottom B is raised to the vertical position.

The back of the chair is composed of two sections, the lower removable section E, and the upper swinging section F, both of which are upholstered. The section F of the back is pivoted at m between the uprights II, which permits it to swing forward into a horizontal position. The lower section E rests upon the cross'rail c, and is removably attached to the section F, by means of dowel pins '11. Upon the adjacent faces of the rails I of the frame, are secured the cleats a, that are adapted to support the section E when removed from the back and placed thereon, as shown in Fig. 2.

When it is desired to offer prayer, the section E of the back is removed and placed upon the cleats z, the section F is swung to a horizontal position, and supported by the bottom B, which is turned up to a vertical position, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, at the same time the brace-arm C is thrown down to prevent the rocking of the chair. In which position the backseat-ion E, affords a rest on which to kneel; the section F affords a support for the arms, and prayer-book, and the receptacles in the bottom afford a convenient place for keeping such book, and other matter of like character. After the service the chair is again restored to the position shown in Fig. 3, the brace-arms folding parallel with the rockers, when it may be used as an ordinary rocking chair.

Having thus fully set forth my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is;--
