SAFETY-PIN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 251,210, dated December 20, 1881,

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THEODORE W. FOSTER, of Providence, in the State of Rhode Island, have invented an Improvement in Safety-Pins, of which the following is a specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the improved attachment of a spiral spring to the back of a jewelry-pin, whereby the point of the fastening-tongue is prevented from accidental displacement from the hook.
Figure 1 is a plan view of the back of the pin. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a transverse section taken in the line 00 a; and through the cap of the spring.
In the drawings, A is the front plate; B, the pivoted tongue, jointed to the plate A at the point I). O is the ordinary point-covering hook, attached to the. back of the plate.
The spiral spring D is soldered at one end to the back of the plate A and at the opposite end to the inner side of the end of the cap E. The cap E, covering the sides of the spring, is provided with a groove or indentation, 6, made diametrically across the end of the cap to receive the tongue B. The spring 1) is placed near to the joint I), and serves to press the I point of the tongue B firmly against the inner side ofthe hook. When the tongue B is being soldered to its joint-piece the heat employed is sufficient to draw the spring temper of the wire, making the tongue soft and easily bent at near the joint, so that the tongue loses its proper elasticity, and is therefore in constant danger of beingwithdrawn from under the hook. This defect will be remedied by the application of the spiral spring and cap, as above described, without rendering the pin inconvenient in its attachment to the garment.
