SPECIFICATION forming partof Letters Patent No. 251,190, dated December 20, 1881.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, EDWARD A. (JooPER, of the city of Buffalo, in the county of Erie and StateofNew York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Gag-Runners, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to a novel construction of a check-loop or gag-runner, whereby the loop through which the check-rein runs is enabled to followthe movements of the horses head, thereby preventing the chafing, bending, and twisting of the straps to which the check-loop is attached and maintaining the neat and attractive appearance of these parts.

My invention consists to that end principally ofa check-loop or runner pivoted to the buckle, whereby it is attached to the head-strap in such manner that the loop can swing forward and backward on the buckle and follow the movements of the check-rein; also, of the particular means whereby the loop is pivoted to the buckle, as hereinafter fully set forth.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a rear elevation of my improved check-loop.

Fig. 3 is a rear elevation of the buckle previous to connecting the loop therewith. Fig. 4 is a rear elevation, showing a modified construction of my improved check-loop.

prevented from being lifted out of the notch d of the loop by compressing the jaws of the notch above the stud c after the latter has been placed in the notch, as represented in Figs. 1 and 3. If preferred, however, the stud 0 may be made oval or flattened, as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 4, the width of its cross-section being greater than its height, and the notch 01 may be constructed with an upper contracted portion, 6, permitting the stud to pass through only when placed on edge, while the lower portion of the notch is enlarged to support the stud after it has been given a quarter-turn. When the parts are so constructed the loop is readily attached to the buckle placing the loop in a horizontal position and depressing its stud into the notch of the buckle. By turning the loop into a vertical position the stud is locked in the notch. As the loop does not materially deviate from a vertical position when I in use, it is not liable to become accidentally detached from the buckle. 'lhe loop is free to swing on its stud in the direction in which the checkaein moves, thereby preventing the chafing of the check-rein and the bendingand twisting of the head-strap to which the buckle is attached.

I claim as my invention- 1. The combination, with a buckle, A, provided with a notch or recess, d, of a check-loop, B, having a stud or pivot, c, engaging in said notch or recess, whereby the loop is enabled to swing forward and backward in the direction in which the check-rein moves, substantially as set forth.

2. The combination, with a buckle, A, provided with a notch or recess, d, of a checkloop, B, having astud or pivot, c, engaging in thenotchot'the buckle, and the means whereby the pivotisconfined in the notch,substantially as set forth.
