Beit known that I, ORLANDO BAEEELLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at South Hartford, in the county of IVashington and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Checkrein Attachments; and I do declare the following to driver handling the reins.

This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements inV checkreins for harnesses; and it has for its objects, among oth ers, to provide an improved construction for this purpose by which'the head of the horse may be held in any desired position by the He can raise or lower the head without leaving the vehicle. He can turn the head of the horse either Way" without raising the head, if desired. He can seesaw on the reins without any side motion on the check-bit. I provide a strap attached to the reins and free to play through a loop or ring attached to the checkrein. I arrange the parts so that if the glands of the neck are swollen or callous-they will notbe aected by my check.

My improvement is applicable to either single or double harness. It is readily and quickly applied or detached, is simple and inexpensive, and in practice has proved most efficient for the purpose for which it is in- Jtended.

Other objects and advantages of theinvention will hereinafter appear, and the novel features thereof will be specifically defined by the appended claim. A

The novelty in the presentinstance resides in the peculiar combinations and the construction, arrangement, and adaptation ot parts, all as more fully hereinafter described, shown in the drawings, and then particularly pointed out in the claim.

The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this speciiication, and in which Figure l is aview illustrating my improve-v ment applied to a single harness. Fig. 2 is a like view showing it applied to a double har ness. Fig. 3 is a plan view thereof.

Like letters of reference indicate like parts throughout the several views in which they occur.

Referring now to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates the reins; B, the martingale, through the rings of which the reins are passed in the usual manner.

C is the checkrein, which at its rear end is provided with a loop or ring a, and through this loop or ring is passed the bight ofthe strap D, the ends of which are passed through the rings or loops b on the harness-saddle, the ends of the strap being connected to the reins in any suitable manner-as, for instance, by buckles of any known or preferred form. By this construction the position and'movement of the head of the horse are at alltimes under the control of the party in the vehicle. The bight of the strap being loosely held in the loop or ring of the checkrein permits of manipulation of the reins without pulling the head of the horse up or down.

It is deemed of the utmostimportance that the bight of the strap D be loosely heid in the ring or loop of the checkrein, as shown, and that a single connection be made between the reins and the said ring or loop, so that the movement given to the check-bit be equalto the movement of the reins, and so that the reins can be seesawed without side motion on the check-bit.

What I claim as new is* The combination, with an overdraw-check lbridle having a short overdraw-strap extending toward the rear and provided at its end with a loop, of thereins and the supplemental strap having its ends attached to the reins to the rear ot' the harness-saddle, passed through the terrets engaged with said loop in front of the saddle, and adapted to render therethrough, substantially as and for the purpose described.
