IMPROVEMENT IN TRACE-CARRIERS FOR HARNESS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 118,344, dated August 22, 1871.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, EDWARD A. COOPER, of Lancaster, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented an Improvement in Trace Carriers for Horses Harness, of which the following is a specification:

Tracecarriers for harness consisting of a hook or other device attached to or forming a part of that ring or frame to which connect the back crupper and hip-straps are well-known and in more or less common use. My invention consists in the peculiar arrangement, with such ring, of a cross-bar on each side, provided with a pendent tongue so as to permit the eockeye of the trace to pass through the loop formed by said cross-bar and engage with the tongue thereof, as will be presently fully explained.

In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a plan of my improved trace-carrier. Fig. 2 is a section in line 00 m, and Fig. 3 a section in line y 3 Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a section similar to Fig. 2 in line of the hip-straps, showing the manner of attaching the traces.

Like letters designate like parts in each of the figures.

A is the ring or frame of my improved carrier, represented of the full size. a a, are the bars or sides to which the back-strap and crupper are respectively attached; a to, bars to which the hip-straps are attached. I) b are elevated cross bars, on the under side of which project pendent tongues c. on each side, I prefer to arrange a cross-bar, d, which forms the fulcrum or rest for the cockeye of the trace when attached to the carrier. This cross-bar, however, is not absolutely essential, as the loop of the hipstraps c e which pass around the bars a may be made to perform the same function in a less perfect manner by making the bridge 1) lower. The cockeye or end of the trace is engaged with my improved carrier by inserting it between the bridge I) and cross-bar d, as shown at the right-in Fig. 4. At the left in the same figure the cockeye is shown in the position in which it is when the trace is supported by the carrier.

My improved device can be cheaply manufactured, it being readily cast complete in one piece. It presents a neat appearance; the traces are easily connected therewith; while there are no projecting parts to catch the tail. of the animal or reins of the harness when using the same.

I claim as my invention The arrangement, with the frame A, of the bridge-bars b b and pendent tongues c c, forming a tracecarrier, substantially as hereinbefore set forth.
