SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 569,048, dated October 6, 1896.

Be it known that I, NELSON H. MEsIcK, of Glencoe Mills, in the county of Columbia and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Harness, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention relates to harnesses used on horses drawing two-wheeled vehicles; and its object is to provide certain new and useful improvements in such harnesses, whereby the jars and jerks incident to the stepping or shoulder motion of the animal are not transmitted to the vehicle, and whereby the occupants of the vehicle are insured easy riding.
The invention consists principally of a tug, a strap connected with the saddle, and a link connecting the said strap and the said tug and arranged to yield longitudinally and vertically to relieve the said tug of the stepping or shoulder motion of the animal.
The invention also consists of certain parts and details and combinations of the same, as will be fully described hereinafter, and then pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improvement as applied. Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the improvement. Fig. 3 is an enlarged perspective view of part of the improvement, and Fig. 4 is an enlarged sectional plan view of the tug on the line 4 4 of Fig. 3.
The tug A, engaging the shaft B, is provided with an eye A, engaged by an elongated link G, loosely engaging the buckleplate of a buckle D,'on which buckles the lower end of a strap E, extending upward and connected at its upper end with a loop F, held on a plate G, secured to the saddle H by the terret I.
It will beseen that the link 0 forms a yielding connection between the tug A and the plate of the buckle D, so that the stepping or shoulder motion of the animal is not transmitted to the tug, as the link 0 yields longitudinally and vertically to relieve the tug of said motion. It is understood that the link 0 can swing transversely as well as longitudinally in the eye A and the plate D, so that the above result is obtained.
On the tug A and near the lower end thereof is formed a second eye A engaged loosely bya link J, similar to the link 0, and loosely connected with a plate K, forming part of the belly-band L, which is thus held and supported from the two tugs and from the saddle.
The arrangement described is such that the shafts B are properly supported from the saddle H, carried on the animals back, but at the same time a longitudinally and vertically yielding connection is made between the tug and the saddle, so that the jars and jerks incident to the stepping motion of the animal 'are not transmitted to the tug, the shafts, and
the vehicle, and consequently the occupants of the vehicle can ride easily.
The tug A is preferably made as a metal ring formed with an annular recess A adapted to be engaged by a ring A of leather, rubber, or similar material, the ring A being sprung into the annular recess, as indicated in Fig. 4, the .inner face of the ring projecting inward beyond the inner face of'the tug.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A harness, comprising a tug formed with eyes, an elongated link engaging the upper one 'of the eyes, a buckle-plate loosely connected with the said link, a strap engaging the said buckle-plate, a loop held on the strap, and a plate engaging the said loop and fastened to the saddle, substantially as shown and described.
2. A harness, comprising a tug formed with an upper and a lower eye, an elongated link engaging said upper eye, a buckle plate loosely connected with the said link, a strap engaging the said buckle-plate, a loop held on the strap, a plate engaging the said loop and fastened to the saddle, a second link engaging the lower eye of the tug, and a bellyband plate loosely connected with the said second link, substantially as shown and described.
3. The combination with a shaft-tug formed with a metallic ring having an interior annular recess and an elastic ring fitted into said recess, said tug having an upper and a lower eye; of a link engaging the upper eye, a nected with said latter link, as shown and buckle-plate loosely connected withsaid link, described.
