Description

Aprilv 25, 1950 R. R. NORWOOD BAG HOLDER Filed Sept. 12, 1947 INVENTOR ATTORNEYS outer ends 9, and an intermediate handle Patented Apr. 25, 1950 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE BAG HOLDER Robert R. Norwood, Mineral Wells, Tex.
Application September 12, 1947, Serial No. 773,671
1 Claim.
This invention relates to bag holders designed for use in connection with delivery spouts, for holding bags in their open positions, so that material from the spouts will be delivered to the bags supported thereon without danger of the material spilling or the bag becoming disconnected from the spout.
An important object of the invention is to provide a bag holder of this character which is operated by a single lever having a double hook, to the end that the bag is securely fastened or held to the delivery spout, by the holder operated by a single operation by the attendant.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists of certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts, hereinafter more fully described and pointed out in the claim, it being understood that changes maybe made in the construction and arrangement of parts without departing from the spirit of the invention as claimed.
Referring to the drawing:
Figure 1 is an elevational view illustrating a bag holder constructed in accordance with the invention, as mounted on the delivery spout of a packaging device.
Figure 2 is an enlarged perspective view illustrating a spout and showing the bag holder as moved to its active or holding position.
Figure 3 is a perspective view taken from the rear of the spout, illustrating the bag holder.
Referring to the drawing in detail, the reference character 5 indicates a delivery spout, through which material being packaged in bags or sacks, is being delivered.
The bag holder forming the essence of the present invention, includes an outwardly extended flange 6 extended along the reanedge of the spout 5, as clearly shown by Figure 3 of the drawing. v
The bag holder also includes a substantially U-shaped member providing arms {which are pivotally connected to the spout 5, bymeans of the bolts 8, the arms being provided with offset section Ill. 7
As clearly shown by the drawing, the spout 5 is wide at its bottom, and the length'of. the arms 1, is suchthat the offset portions thereof will be held against movement over the lower end of the spout. The ofiset portions or ends 9, provide supports for the gripping plates i I that have inwardly turned ends [2 adapted to engage the spout at an angle of approximately 45, and cooperate with the spout in gripping a bag which is positioned over the end of the spout.
It will be seen that due to the construction of the spout, and inwardly turned ends of the plates I I, the weclging action will be set up between the gripping plates II and spout to hold the ba supported on the spout, against displacement, the pressure of the material within the bag acting to draw the gripping plates into close engagement with the bag.
From the foregoing, it will be seen that dueto the construction shown and described, all that is necessary to secure a bag to the spout, is to position one end of the open bag over the flange 6, and place the opposite edge of the bag over the spout. The handle may now be dropped until the gripping plates engage the bag, which will movably but securely hold the bag in place under the weight of the material fed thereinto.
What is claimed is:
The combination with a delivery spout having an outwardly flared discharge end, of a bag holder comprising an outwardly extended flange formed along one side of the delivery spout at its open end, a pivoted member including arms pivotally connected to the sides of the spout, said arms having offset ends, depending gripping plates having inwardly extended lower ends, secured to the oifset outer ends of the arms, said plates cooperating with the outer flared portion of the spout in gripping a sack positioned over the discharge end of the delivery spout, securing the bag to the spout, and a handle by means of which the pivoted member is operated.
