This application is a division of my co-pending application Serial No. 377,884, filed Feb. "I, 1941, which resulted in U. 3. Patent #2383909 dated August 21, 1945.

This invention relates to hanger devices, and more particularly to garment hanger means. especially for use in connection with paper bags or other receptacles.

It is an object of the present invention to provide hanger means adapted to support a garment thereon in folded condition, said hanger means, when accommodated in a bag bracing the upper part of the same, which is preferably made of flexible or paper material and may be used to enclose said garment.

It is another object of the present invention to provide garment hanger means including a hand grip facilitating support of a garment in folded condition.

A still further object of the present invention is to provide a flexible garment hanger structure which carries a removable rod .member for supporting a garment thereon, said rod member being secured in firm position by said structure.

Yet, another object of the present invention is to provide a garment hanger having a yoke or ball member which is made of flexible material and carries a rod member, the bail or yoke member, when suspended and upon engagement of a garment with said rod member. being flexed due to the weight of the garment, thereby forcing the ends of said ball member to firmly hold or engage the ends of said rod member.

It is a still further object of the present invention to provide a hanger device provided with a loop element for engagement with the hook or hooks of conventional garment shoulder hangers, the aforesaid rod member being untilized to receive and support lower portion or portions of garments suspending from said shoulder hangers, in folded condition.

Yet, a further object of the present invention is to provide a hanger device for use in a paper bag or the like, which device permits the transport of a garment or garments of a length greater than the length of the bag, said garment or garments being held in folded position in said bag without being crushed or crumbled.

Still another object of the present invention is to provide a hanger device for a garment or a plurality of garments which device enables a person to conveniently and easily pack said garments and to carry them in a bag, which may prefer- 2 ably be made of paper or similar inexpensive flexible material. a portion of said device forming a hand grip by which said device and garments thereon may be carried by the hand of a person or may be suspended from a suitable support.

It is yet a further object of the present invention to provide hanger means particularly adapted for use in paper or like bags and which is economical, eflicient, practical, inexpensive and capable of supporting a garment in compact form.

Yet, another object of the present invention is to connect garment shoulder hanger means with a garment folding device, one or more garment portions depending from said shoulder hanger means being folded over said folding device, which is positioned in a plane different from that of said shoulder hanger means, preferably laterally thereto.

These and other objects and advantages of the invention will appear from the following disclosure thereof together with the attached drawing which illustrates certain forms of embodiment thereof. These forms are shown for the purpose of illustrating the invention since the same has been found in practice to give satisfactory and reliable results, although it is to be understood that the various-parts of which the invention consists can be variously arranged and organized and that the invention is not limited to the precise arrangement and organization of the instrumentalities as herein shown and described.

Fig. 1 illustrates one form of a hanger device made in accordance with the'invention.

Fig. 2 shows the device of Fig. 1 with one end of the rod member thereof disengaged (the garment shoulder hanger seen in Fig. 1 being omitted).

Fig. 3 shows the hanger device of Fig. 1 enclosed in a bag and supporting a garment in folded condition.

Referring now to the drawing, numeral 20 indicates a conventional bag made of paper or similar material used in the tailoring, cleaning and dyeing trade, and which may have closure means II at the side of the bag 20 to hold the front and rear walls of said bag together in closed position of the latter (Fig. 3).

Disposed within the bag 20 is a hanger or folding device 22 shown as being made of one piece of wire material and having a' handle or hand grip 23 projecting from within said bag therewithout through a slot 25 of said bag 20. Connected to folding device 22 is the conventional garment shoulder hanger 24, as clearly seen in Fig. 1.

According to Fig. 1 the hanger of folding device 22 is provided with a flexible ball or yoke member having aligned and horizontally directed arms 46, a hand grip 23 positioned intermediate and above said arms and a substantially rigid rod member 43 positioned between downwardly directed parallel legs 45 for engagement with the latter. A loop is pivotally suspended from hand grip 23 for which purpose said grip 23 is provided with a downwardly directed groove or notch 4| tov hold loop 40 in place. Loop 49 is employable for receiving the hook 42 of one or a plurality of conventional garment shoulder hangers 24. When one or more garments or dresses are hung on said conventional shoulder hangers and the latter are suspended from loop 40, the lower depending portions of the garments may then be folded over bar or rod 43. To this end, bar 43 and legs are provided with interfitting formations 3l-32 and 33-44. Bar 43 has reduced ends 44 for engagement with the hook shaped ends 45 of bail member 48 of the folding device 22 and for removal therefrom. Bar 43 may be first removed from ball or yoke 43 and after the depending dress portions are lifted by means of bar 43 the latter is then again brought into engagement with said ends 45 at 32 and 34 supporting thereby the folded over dress or garment portions. Thus, dress 50 is maintained in neatly folded condition and may be carried in a bag, as indicated by dot-dash lines of Fig. 3. The folding means 22 will assume a position laterally of the shoulder hanger means 24 and are thus positioned in a plane different from that of the shoulder hanger means 24.

Dress 50 may be carried inbag 2|.through which hand grip23 of device 22 projects for engagement with the hand of a person (not shown).

It can be seen from the above disclosure that the instrumentalities employed in this invention maintain a garment or a plurality'thereof in compact folded condition thereby permitting the use of a relatively short bag 20, as illustrated in Fig. 3, thus taking up a relatively small space therein and further making the garment package unusually simple and easy to carry.

Fromthe above it will be realized that there has been provided according to this invention a garment supporting device which comprises a flexible bail member provided with substantially horizontally extending flexible arms, downwardly directed ends depending from said arms, respectively, U-shaped hand grip means engaging said ball member and positioned intermediate said arms and above said ends, and a substantially rigid rod member engaging with said ends for 4 supporting said garment thereon in folded condition, said downwardly directed ends upon loading of said rod member with said garment tightly engaging and exerting oppositely directed pressure lengthwise of said rod member.

It is well understood that loop 40, as mentioned, may be made from wire, any suitable string material, or may form a part of the folding device 22 and may be afllxed thereto. The folding device 22 may be made from a single piece of wire, as disclosed in my U. 8. Patent No. 2,383,009 dated August 21, 1945.

Although I have described my improvement with considerable detail and with respect to a certain particular form of my invention, I do not desire to be limited to such details since changes and modifications in the form, arrangement, proportions and sizes thereof may well be made without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention in its broadest aspect.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is:

In a garment supporting device, a U-shaped bail member comprising substantially horizontally directed arms aligned to each other and terminating in downwardly extending parallel legs, a U -shaped hand grip fixed to and positioned intermediate said arms, said hand grip being positioned above said arms and being provided with a centrally arranged and downwardly directed notch, a loop element for supporting garment shoulder hanger means freely and swingably engaging said notch and depending from said hand grip, a substantlally rigid rod member extending parallel to said arms and positioned between said legs of said bail member for engagement therewith, and interfitting formations at the extremities of said rod member and of said legs, respectively, for removably connecting said rod member with said legs, said rod member being adapted to support between said legs of said U-shaped bail member the lower portion of a garment when said-garment is supported by said garment shoulder hanger and depends therefrom.
