' 10, Claims. (01. 2067) 7 This invention-relates to garment cover or casing structures, which may be used for traveling, as well as for storing purposes and which may employ garment folding means in order to reduce the dimensions of the cover structure to a minimum.
It is one of the objects of the invention to provide means affording a substantially dust-proof closure for cover structures without the necessity of combining same with any complicated and bulky frames, braces, etc.
It is another object of the invention to provide means facilitating the manufacture of an inexpensive cover structure of the above type, which may be cut from a single piece of sheet material made of a plastic (preferably transparent), cellulosic or similar substance, which permits discarding of the cover structure after it has been vention, the cover being shownin open position. .Fig; .6 illustrates a front elevational view of the garment-cover of Fig. in closed position. i Fig. '7 is asectioh'al View taken along line .'I''! of Fig. 6. I vFig.8 is a front elevational view of a still further modified form of a garment cover made in provide means permitting the employment of one Fig. 1 shows a garment cover made in accordance with this invention in open position-and in front elevation.
Fig. 2 shows the garment cover of Fig. 1 in closed condition and in elevation.
, Fig. 3 is an enlarged sectional view taken along line 33 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 3a is'a fragmentary sectional view similar to that of Fig. 3 but showing the upper portion only and illustrating a modification thereof.
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary view of a corner of the garment cover in somewhat modified form and in open position.
Fig. 5 shows a garment cover in a further modifled .form'and made in accordance with the inaccordance with this invention as shown in open position. .Fig. 9 illustrates the garment cover of Fig. 8 i closed but unfolded position. 7
Referring now more particularly to the drawingsthere is shown in Fig. l a garment cover or casing [0 made of cellulosic or'plasticmaterial which may be easily folded. The casing. has a rear wall Hand front wall l2. These walls are preferably made from one single piece of material having'a fold at l3 by which they are hinged together. Fold I3 also forms the end of a pocket M which is obtained by stitching together in superposed position adjacent portions I5a and Mia of side edges; [5 and I6, respectively, which portions l5a and 16a are positioned at opposite sides of and extend a predetermined length from the fold. l3. Y
Front wall l2 forms at the upper end of the pocket I4 a fold IT as can be seen from Figs. 1 and 2. Front'wall I2 has further a central extension l2a for a purpose later described.
Rear wall I l as well as front wall 12 are further provided with lateral walls or side flaps l8, I9 20 and 2|, respectively, which are fixed as by stitches 25 along side edges I5 and [6, respectively, and further. along upper edge 22 of the rear wall II and upper edge 23 of the front wall l2 of hollow body orcasing Ill. The side flaps are defined by inclined longitudinal inner edges lBa, 19a, 20a andeZia which terminate, respectively, adjacent pocket 14 as may be visualized from Fig. 1 and converge toward the upperpr end edges 22 and Zitowhich they are affixed by means of stitches and the like.
As seen in Fig. 1 between the inner faces of rear wall II and side flaps l8 and I9 there extends loosely a rod'member 26 which is exposed with its median portion 21 between the ends l8b and {9b of; the-side flaps l8 and [9 which define therebetween a median part of the upper end edge 22 andform at said median edge part the opening 24. Onmedian portion 21 of rod 26 there is affixed ajhandle 28'fterminating into two loops 29 and 30. A further centrally arranged loop 3| is carried by medianportion 21, which loop 3| has a depending loop portion 31a adapted. to carry a garment hanger of conventional " design 32, 3
Adjacent the ends of rod 26, which may be made of wood, metal or plastic material and which should be relatively rigid there are further slidably engaged S-shaped loops 33 and 34 for the purpose of engaging with loop portion 330. and 34a, respectively, a garment folding member 35 whose structure and function has been more clearly described in my U. S. Patent No. 2,180,489.
While Fig. 1 shows casing H in open position and with the handle 28 carrying rod 26 inserted within the upper part of the garment casing, Fig. 2 shows this garment casing in closed position and so constructed that side flaps 26 and 2| are placed over the outer face and upper edge 22 of rear wall so that the inner faces of front wall l2 and of side flaps 26 and 2| contact and overlie side flaps l8 and H! as well as the contiguous parts of rear wall II at the outer face thereof. Thus, flaps 2|], 2| form retaining or closure means of the garment casing or receptacle l0.
' Fig. 2 shows garment 4|! depending from garment hanger 32 and folded over folding device 35 whereby the garment of reduced length is enclosed in garment casing I6 which is folded along folding line l3. Extension |'2a in such closed position of the garment casing is threaded through the handle ends 29 and 30 and extends then over and somewhat along the upper part of the outer face of rear wall I I to thereby close and overlie opening 24.
It can thus be seen that a substantially dustproof closure of the garment cover or casing is obtained in which rod 26 abuts against the upper inner seam at end edge 22, braces the foldable material and facilitates by means of handle 28 carrying of the closed garment casing of reduced size and with the garment in folded condition (Fig. 2 showing for claritys sake rod 26 with its loops in non-abutting position).
Fig. 3a shows the upper part of a sectional view somewhat similar to that of Fig. 3 in which median portion 21 of rod 26 is shown in section together with its B-shaped loop 3|. This loop 3| has further extensions 3|b and 3|c integral with the strip material of which the loop is made. It is preferred to employ any suitable flexible and foldable plastic substance for such strip material. Extensions 31b and 3|c form protecting flaps whose width is determined by the inner distance between the handle loops 29 and 3D and overlie the opening 24 in closed position of the garment cover. Thus extension |2a heretoforementioned with respect to Figs. 1 to 3 may be dispensed with and any waste of material when cutting walls H and I2 of the garment cover may thus be avoided.
Fig. 4 shows the replacement of the pocket l4 hereinabove referred to by employing a fold |3a forming the symmetrical axis of the hinged walls II and I2 of the garment casing] The lateral flaps l9 and 2| terminate at and coincide with the fold |3a at 4|.
' In order to prevent any dust or other foreign matter from penetrating the garment cover when in folded condition a relatively flexible and preferably arc-shaped gusset insert 42 is employed which extends lengthwise of edge I6, is stitched thereto at 25 and projects therefrom toward the interior of the garment cover. This insert 42 is normally in contact with the inner faces of side flaps I9 and 2| and the inner faces of walls and I2. Thus it will be readily realized that when this modified garment cover la is brought into foldin condition about fold |3,a the portion adjacent said fold will be kept closed by the pliable insert 42 which is held in position by the folded garment, which retains insert 42 away from its contact with the inner faces of walls H and i2 against which the garment comes to lie. Fig. 4 shows only a right hand portion of the garment cover |0a positioned at its symmetrical fold line. Otherwise the garment cover may be constructed in accordance with remaining parts seen in Fig. 1 or 3a, respectively.
Figs. 5 to 7, inclusive, show a modified form of the garment cover which is of reduced size in open as well as closed conditions thereof. Cover 56 has the rear wall 5| and front Wall 52 (which forms a wedge-shaped median flap) and the fold 53 forming the end of pocket 5 which is formed by the lower portions of the rear and front walls 5| and 52.
Walls 5| and 52 are stitched or otherwise sealed together along side edges 55 and 56 but for the median opening 5?. Front wall 52 of rear wall 5| includes side flaps 58 and 59 which are con-- nectable by means of slide fasteners 60 and 6| to the upwardly converging side edges 52b and 520 of the aforesaid complementary median flap forming the movable portion of front wall 52. Front wall 52 in this particular instance is further provided with an extension 52a having a snap button part 62 for a purpose later described. Between the inner faces of side flaps 58 and 59- and rear wall 5| and adjacent to the upper or end edge 64 of the garment cover 59 there extend loops 65 and 65 which, in this instance, are attached to the upper edge 64 of rear wall 5|. These loops are made from suitable plastic strip material and preferably from the same material as the garment cover.
It is proposed to have the garment cover front wall and rear wall together with these loops 65 and 66 heat sealed so as to form a single unit. Through the openings of loops 65 and 66 there may be inserted rod 61 carrying a handle 68 terminating in loops 69 and 70 engaging rod 61. A central 8-shaped loop H is positioned on rod 61 and is employed for a purpose similar to loop 3| hereinabove referred to with respect to Fig. 1.
It will thus become apparent that a garment hanger together with a folded garment placed ther-eon may be readily inserted into the interior of garment cover 56 and held in position and depend on loop 7| as is easily understood from the disclosure hereinabove mentioned.
The slide fasteners 66 and 6| are then employed to close the front wall along the side edges 58a and 59a of the side flaps as is seen in Fig. 6, the extension 52a being threaded through handle 68 and between the. loops 69 and 10 thereof and then closed at the outer face of rear wall 5| by the engagement of snap fastener parts 62 and 63 as may be visualized from Fig. 7, which shows an enlarged sectional view of the garment cover taken along the line l-| of Fig. 6.
It may be further seen from Fig. 5 that the median flap of front wall 52 depends from fold 72 about which the same may be swung to open and closed positions of garment cover, respectively.
It is well understood that the unitary structure 26 with loops 3|, 33 and 34 and handle 28 together with the garment hanger 32 and garment folder 35 may be used in place and instead of the fixed loops 65 and 66 and of the removable rod 61 with loop H and handle 68 as described with reference to Figs. 5 to 7, inclusive.
' Fig. 8 shows a garment cover made in accord-v ahce with-this invention in a still further modifie'd form. This garment cover is especially designed for hanging up coats, dresses and the like in full length. To this effect garment cover or casing 89 is provided with a lower closed pocket BI and an upper closable pocket 82. Both pockets are foldable upon each other about fold 83. The lower or closed pocket 8! has a rear wall 84 which extends to and forms the rear wall of the closable pocket 82.
The front wall 95 of the closed pocket 8| is connected to'the rear wall 84 along edge 86 and a predetermined distance along opposite side edges 81 and 88 and beyond the fold 83 to terminate at 89 and 99, respectively.
The-inner face 85a of front wall 85 is provided with side flaps 9I and 92 (which are similar in shape and function to side flaps 29 and 2| of Fig. 1). of the stitches between front and rear walls '84 and 85 at 89 and 99. Rear wall 84 is also provided with side flaps 93 and 94 which are affixed at upper edge 95 but leave opening 96 to which reference is made below.
Side flaps 93 and 94 are defined by downwardly diverging inner edges 93a and 94a which terminate adjacent fold 83 at 9317 and 94b, respectively. The upper closable pocket 82 is provided, in this instance, with fixed loops 9! and 98 which are stitched to or heat sealed at edge 95 when the upper edges of side flaps 93 and 99 are afiixed to rear wall 84.
Through loops 9! and 98 may be inserted as hereinabove described in respect to Figs. 5 to '7 a rod member 99 carrying a double 8-shaped loop I99 between ends I9I and I92 of handle I93 projecting from rod 99 beyond the upper edge 95 through opening 99. Loop means I99 may be em ployed to receive the hooks of garment hangers (not shown) whereby upper and lower loop portions I99a and I991) may depend from rod 99 as'seen in Fig. 9. r
When the garments are thus hung up on the hangers and introduced into the closed pocket 8| and extend into the closable pocket 82 the latter may be closed in a manner similar to that described with respect to Figs. 1 to 3, inclusive.
Side flaps 9I and 92 terminate at the ends To this effect side flaps 9| and 92 together with front wall 95=hinged about fold I99 are swung in upward direction whereby side flaps 9| and 92 embrace and envelop side flaps 93 and 94 and extend over the outer face of rear wall 84. This position of flaps 9I and 92 can be seen in Fig. 9, which shows the garment cover 99 in closed position and as seen from the back or rear thereof.
In order to take the Weight of garments off the material of the bag 89 a strip or tape of flexible or pliable material I95 may be applied to and extend from rod member 99 to rod member I 99 and may be affixed thereto in any convenient manner. Rod I95 is inserted in the lower'pocket BI and extends with its handle I91 beyond edge 86 of the lower pocket 8|. of the handle I9'I are looped around rod I96. Between these ends I98 and I99 is affixed one end 9- of tape I95 as may be visualized from Figs. 8 and 9. The other end of tape I95 may have a cutout for accommodating therein loops I99a and I99b or these loops may be formed integral with tape I95, if desired.
The material of these bags may be made of light plastic or cellulosic material since the same has not to withstandany weight or pull and serves solely as-a cover for the garments to be placed in the bag.
