Description

Oct. 31, 1950 M. w. MGWHORTER GARMENT HANGER Filed Dec. 24, 1947 MAR/E m MWHORTEP,
ATTORNEY Patented Oct. 31, 1950 UNITED STATES PATENT OFF'I CZE GARMENT HANGER Marie W. MeWhorter, Charlotte, N. 0.
Application December 24, 1947, Serial No. 793,579
3 Claims.
This invention relates to a garment hanger and is a continuation in part of the subject matter of my co-pending patent application, Serial No. 787,727, filed November 24, 1947.
This invention relates primarily to a garment hanger having means for suspending garments therefrom and having a handle portion through which the hand may be inserted for carrying the garment while hanging on the garment hanger and said handle portion having pivotally attached thereto a hook member which can be raised to vertical position when it is desired to hang the garment hanger with garments thereon onto a suitable support such as a hook or a pole from which garment hangers are suspended and when it is desired to carry the garment suspended on the hanger, the pivoted hook member can be allowed to fall downwardly out of the way and the hand or fingers of the hand can be inserted through the rectangular handle portion to thus easily carry the garment and garment hanger much more efiiciently and easily than if the garment hanger had to be carried by engaging the hand in the hook which is employed for hanging the garment hanger on a suitable support.
It is therefore an object of this invention to provide a garment hanger having a handle portion for carrying the same and also having a hook portion pivotally secured to the handle portion for use in hanging the garment hanger upon a suitable support.
Some of the objects of the invention 'having been stated, other objects will appear as the description proceeds, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is an elevation of the garment hanger with portions thereof broken away;
Figure 2 is a view similar to Figure l but showing the hook member in depending position;
Figure 3 is an isometric view of the upper portion of the garment hanger as disclosed in Figure 1;
Figure 4 is an end elevation looking to the left from the right-hand side of Figure 1.
Referring more specifically to the drawings, the numeral l indicates the upper portion of a handle member which usually would be the medial portion of a wire from which the hanger is formed. The two ends of the wire are bent downwardly at right angles from the portion H! as at I I and i2 and these ends are then bent inwardly as at [3 and I4 and twisted around each other as at l5. After the two end portions are twisted around each other as at l5, they project in opposite directions as at l6 and I! and then have inclined portions l8 and I 9 respectively and then are bent inwardly toward each other to provide legs 20 and 2| on which is mounted a suitable tubular member 22, thus completing the main body of the garment hanger.
There is also provided a hooked member comprising two portions 25 and 26 bent upon themselves as at 21 and formed into a hooked portion and then twisted together as at 28 and then these portions diverge as at 29 and 30 and are looped around the portions l3 and I4 as at 32 and 33 in a pivotal manner so that the hook member formed from portions 25 and 26 can pivot easily to fall from the position shown in Figure 1 to the position shown in Figure 2 when it is desired to use the handle portion It! for supporting the weight of the garment hanger and the garments disposed thereon.
This garment hanger can not only be employed as a regular garment hanger for placing garments thereon and hanging in a closet or inserting in a laundry garment bag as employed when garments are delivered from a laundry by employing the hook portion for hanging the garments in a closet or by employing the handle portion I0 for carrying the garments from place to place, but it can also be used in a garment bag of the type disclosed in my above referred to co-pending application.
In the drawings and specification there has been set forth a preferred embodiment of the invention and although specific terms are employed, they are used in a generic and descriptive sense only, and not for purposes of limitation, the scope of the invention being defined in the claims.
I claim:
1. A garment hanger comprising a horizontal portion on which a garment may be suspended and upwardly converging portions for also supporting a garment, said upwardly converging portions being twisted upon themselves and extending upwardly and being formed into a rectangular handle portion, a member having a hook on its free end and having diverging legs at its other end encircling the lower portion of the rectangular handle to permit the member having a hook thereon to pivot on therectangular handle portion, and said member having a hook thereon being of such a length as to cause the hook to occupy a position above the handle portion when the member having the hook thereon is raised to a vertical position.
2. A garment hanger comprising a pair of inclined portions for supporting a garment, the
lower ends of said inclined portions being turned inwardly toward each other and a tubular member mounted on the inwardly turned portions, and on which a second garment may be supported, an upwardly extending portion merging with the upper ends of the two inclined portions and having an enlarged opening therein for receiving a hand for carrying the same, the lower portion of the upward extending portion having the enlarged opening thereon having pivotally secured thereto a member whose other end is bent into the form of a hook for supporting the garment hanger and any garments disposed thereon.
3. A garment hanger comprising a rectangular handle portion, a hook member having a hook on its upper end and having diverging legsoat its lower end encircling the lower portion ofthe rectangular handle portion and being pivotally mounted thereon, the lower portion of the rectangular 4 handle portion having projecting downwardly therefrom a pair of wires twisted upon each other and extending outwardly in diverging relation to each other and then extending inwardly toward each other, and a tubular member mounted on the portions which extent inwardly toward each other.
