2 Claim.
This invention relates to a knot and rope instruction board.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a knot and rope instruction board wherein there is provided on the board the different coupling members to which rope will be connected including pulleys, cleats, spar, hook and wherein the pulley elements are adjustable as the rope is extended through the same so that a comparison of the motion and extent to which the pulleys are lifted for a given pull of rope can be readily observed and compared and whereby the pulleys will be automatically returned to their lowered position, means being provided for guiding the movement of the pulleys and the pulleys being weighted to be returned and wherein portions of the board can be folded inwardly when the board is put out of use whereby to permit the easy transport of the board.
Other objects of the present invention are to provide a knot and rope instruction board which is of simple construction, inexpensive to manufacture, convenient to use, easy to operate and efficient in operation.
For other objects and. for a better understanding of the invention, reference may be had to the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the instruction board set up for operation.
Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view taken on line 22 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view, in elevation, taken on line 33 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a front elevational view, of one of the movable guides.
Fig. 5 is a fragmentary sectional view illustrating a modification of the invention and wherein the bottom supporting boards can be folded inwardly and upwardly when the board is to be transported.
Referring now to the figures, l and II represent upright members which extend the full height of the board and between which are ex tended a top plate l2, a plate I3 and a display board I4 for knots IS. The several knots l are of different types known to seafarers and also on the board l4 at the lower edge thereof are screw eyes I! depending therefrom and immediately thereabove are a series or groups of pulleys l8 corresponding to the pulleys of a stationary pulley block. Outlined about these pulleys are lines l9 representative of pulley blocks and illustrating the connection of the pulley blocks to a adjusted to their outward positions.

Across the bottom ends of the upright mem bers is a plate 23 and between the upright members l0 there are assembled a plurality of alternate fixed guides 24 and movable guides 25 having respectively pulley blocks 26 assembled upon them. The movable guides 25 can be lifted from between the stationary guides 24 when ropes are extended through their pulley wheels 21 and secured either to their pins 28 or to the pins or screw eyes I! of the upper pulleys. As the ropes are pulled for the different pulley arrangements, the pulley blocks 26 can be'lifted. By pulling equal distances on the different ropes, the amount of lift of the pulley blocks 26 can be observed. The operation or mechanical advantage is defined on a plate 29 extending along the top of plate l3 and beneath the pulley blocks 26. The movable guides 25 may have respectively weights 3| thereon. These weights are secured by screws On the supports I 0 are end plates 33 from which depend sides 34 and 35 from an angle to provide leg portions for maintaining the board upright. These members 34 have a plate 36 on which other knots 31 can be displayed. This plate 36 may also have a cleat 38 which can be used for effecting the tying of certain knots to it.
The plates I2 and I3 extend to the side and between the plates there is extended vertically a spar 4! about which knots can be tied. The top plate I2 has a screw eye 42 suspended from the same and in this screw eye there is fitted a hook 43 to which rope can be connected.
Referring now particularly to Fig. 5, there is shown an arrangement whereby the supporting feet portions 36 are adjustably connected as indicated at 44 to a block 45 and are restrained against outward displacement by a cord 46 when When the board is to be transported, the sides or foot portions 35 and 36 are pivoted inwardly to the pull line positions shown in Fig. 5.
While various changes may be made in the detail construction, it shall be understood that such changes shall be within the spirit and scope of the present invention as defined by the appended claims.
Having thus set forth and disclosed the nature of my invention, what is claimed is:
1. A rope instruction board comprising vertically extending upright members, a display board connected between the members and having a plurality of pulley wheels therein, a plate extending between the upright members and below the display board, said plate having openings 7 therein, pulley blocks having depending guide projections extending respectively downwardly through the openings in the plate, said pulleys and said pulley blocks adapted to receive rope whereby the pulley blocks can be elevated and the projections guided by the openings in the plate, said projections of the pulleyjblocks having suflicient weight to effect the return of the pulley blocks to the downward positions upon release of the rope, fixed guides secured between the upright supports beneath the plate to provide guideways for receiving the projections of the pulley blocks, and means for supporting -'the upright members and the parts associated therewith from a horizontal surface.

A rope instruction board comprising vertically extending upright members, a display board ,connected between :the vertically :extending upright members .and;hav.ing a plurality of pulley wheels therein, pulley blocks having depending guide projections fixtendi-ng respectively downwardly therefrom, means -for slidably retaining the respective iguide projections in laterally .Spacedrelationship "with respect to one another,
said pulley wheels and said pulley blocks adapted to receive ropes to efiect the adjustment of the blocks, said projections of the pulley blocks having sufiicient weight to effect the return of the pulley blocks to their lowered positions upon release of the rope and means for supporting the upright members and the parts associated therewith in a vertically extending position EDWARD J.
