Description

1. COHN DANCING DOLL April 18, 1950 2 Sheets-Sheet 1 Filed Aug. 26, 1947 J INVENTOR.
HTZ'OKALZ'X FIEJEI DANCING DOLL I A aril 18, 1950 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 Filed Aug. 26, 1947 v Patented Apr. 18, 1950 UNITED STATES GFFF DANCINGYDOLL Irwin".Ciilin, Lominsterg'Massz. Application August 26, 194i; "serialiva. Waste 2 Claims. (01. 4s 1ss) The object of the present invention is to provide a doll incorporating a power device, the doll having a side-to-side and rotary motion secured by very simple means and without the use of surface engaging Wheels or the like, or any momentum producing means other than a rotating hat or similar member having a slightly eccentric action.
By means of the invention, a pleasing dancing" effect is secured with respect to a rigid construction which may be inexpensively molded of plastic to enclose a spring motor having a shaft which projects through the top of the doll head and carries a rotating hat. It is by means of this rotating hat, in conjunction with a broad base member having one or more central fulcrum projections, that the desired action is secured.
The invention will be described with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a front elevation showing an embodiment of the invention, the dotted lines showing the movement of the doll from side to side during the rotation of the hat;
Figure 2 is a view similar to Figure 1, but in side elevation;
Figure 3 is a plan view partly broken away, showing a hat;
Figure 4 is a bottom view partly broken away;
Figure 5 is a view in front elevation showing the relation of the gears in the spring motor;
Figure 6 is a side elevation showing the structure of Figure 5;
Figure 7 is a horizontal section, somewhat enlarged, on the line 1-1 of Figure 6; and
Figure 8 is a fragmentary vertical section on the line 8-8 of Figure 1.
The doll figure consists of a body member I, a head 2, and leg members 3. This assembly may be molded from sheet plastic, or stamped in two halves from metal or be constructed in any suitable manner to provide a body cavity adapted to receive a spring motor. In present practice the body is made of two longitudinal halves, each half being molded from a sheet of plastic. In the rear longitudinal half of the plastic structure, a motor frame 4 is mounted, the body being apertured to receive metallic tongues 4a:, which tongues are then bent over, as shown more particularly in Figure 2. In this manner the motor is suspended within the body. The motor spring is shown at 5, being held between the plate-like frame 4, and a flange bracket member 6. The spring drives a gear 1 in mesh with a pinion 8 on a shaft 9, the shaft carrying a gear [0 in mesh 2 I 2, the latter rotating vertical shaft l3 through the intermediary of a drum pinion M. The
motor shaft l5 projects through the body of the doll and its end may be formed as a winding key 153:.
To the upper end of the shaft I3 is mounted a wide brimmed hat I6, the mounting being shown at l6a:, Figure 8.
For the application of eccentricity to the hat a decorative member is applied, it being a bangle H.
The base of the doll is of special form. It consists of a plate [8 of suflicient area to give stability to the doll in both rocking and bodily rotating movements thereof. The margins of the plate are preferably upturned as at 18a, to facilitate rocking movement.
I provide at the lower face of the base l8 two fulcrum members lBxzr. These depend from the base plate a distance greater than any other portion of the plate, so thatonly a small supporting surface is normally employed. Also, inwardly of the upturned rim lilac the base plate is hollowed out as shown more particularly at 18, so that when rocking motion is given to the doll, specific areas only of the rim l8a: will bear upon the table or other support conjointly with one or both of the fulcrum members l8xrr.
When the doll is supported upon a table or other surface, the motor being wound and then released, rotation of the hat IE will result. Centrifugal force will throw the eccentric weight I! outwardly toward the horizontal and will effect a rocking motion of the doll upon the fulcrum members of its base, as shown by the dotted lines in Figs. 1 and 2, and will also cause bodily rotation of the entire dolls structure. At the same time the eccentric weight, although very light indeed, will reduce the speed of rotation of a "hat and lengthen the action of the doll.
It will be understood that the dolls lineation may be as desired. Obviously it may be an animal or bird figure, or represent a normally inanimate object. The hat may be any rotating member, and its marginal eccentricity may be secured in any suitable way, as by a thickened wall at one area, or the application of various forms of marginal ornamentation, as desired. Various other modifications may be made in the form and arrangement of the elements constituting the embodiment illustrated in the drawings without departing from the spirit of the invention. I
Having thus described my invention, what I with the pinion II, which carries a spur wheel claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. A dancing doll comprising a hollow doll figure, a motor mounted therein having a driven vertical shaft projecting outwardly of the head of the doll figure, a relatively wide eccentrically weighted hat secured on the end of said shaft to rotate therewith, the doll figure being secured on a relatively broad base having downwardly protruding projections spaced inwardly from the edges of the base forming with all points of the edge portion of the base a support wobbly in all directions when rested on a substantially flat support, the eccentrically weighted hat when rotating causing the doll to rock irregularly and to rotate simultaneously.
2. A dancing doll as set forth in claim 1 and in which the base has an upturned edge portion,
the lowermost undersurfaceof the edge portion being lower than the undersuriace oi the base intermediate the edge portion and the said downwardly protruding projections.
