Description

Filed June 4, 1946 INVEN TOR.
A from/EV Patented Dec. 28, 1948 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 2 Claims. 1
The object of the present invention is to provide a carousel toy for children embodying a base member formed as a hemisphere and provided with a motor-driven decorative wheel adapted to rotate the hemisphere and objects such as animals, of plastic or the like, mounted thereon, in such manner that the hemisphere rotates on its vertical axis. With the exception of a spring motor and a winding shaft therefor together with a key shaped as an umbrella the entire device may be made of molded plastic including the umbrella cover member.
The invention will be described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
Fig. 1 is a view in elevation showing an embodiment of the invention;
Fig. 2 is a horizontal section on the line 2--2, Fig. 3, partly broken away,
Fig. 3 is a vertical section through the upper part of the hemisphere and through the motor.
Referring to the drawings I have shown at I a hemisphere which may be formed of plastic sheet and which is provided with a cover of like material, shown at 2. The cover provides a flat surface for the mounting of the objects, those of the drawing being a plurality of animal figures, arranged near the periphery of the cover 2 and facing in the same direction. These objects may be widely varied as to kind. Carried interiorly of the hemisphere I is a spring motor box 3. Plastic strips such as that indicated at 4 may be cemented to the box and to the interior of member I for suspending the box.
In the present embodiment the motor consists of a spring 5 having its end 5:: bent around a section of the wall of box 3, the opposite end being secured to a drive shaft 6 journaled in apertures formed in the box 3 and extending upwardly through cover 2. On shaft 6 is a. gear I in mesh with a pinion 8 on a shaft 9 which also carries a gear ID in mesh with a pinion II on a shaft I2, the latter carrying a spur gear I3 in mesh with a pinion I4 connected to a shaft l5 which projects outwardly from hemisphere I.
Carried at the outer end of shaft I5 is a wheel I6 which may be of ornamental form. Its outer face at the shaft area carries a hub cap I! and at its rear face the wheel carries a cup member I8 within which may be placed a sound producing element. In the present instance the latter is a bell-sounding ball I9 formed of metal and having within it a striking pellet or shot indicated at I912.
The winding shaft 6 which projects upwardly receive a key which consists of the umbrella post 20, Fig. 1.
. spring motor within the body member, a vertically carries at its top an umbrella covering 20 of plastic, surmounted by a ball 2|.
When the motor is wound and the device placed upon a table or other plane support the motor will rotate wheel l6 upon the support, indicated at S and the hemisphere will rotate on its vertical axis with a carousel effect inasmuch as the animals or other objects will be moved forwardly in a circular path. At the same time the sound element will produce a pleasing sound effect.
It will be understood that various modifications may be made in the form and arrangement of the elements constituting the embodiment illustrated in the drawing without departing from the spirit of the invention. Thus by my using a 1 striking member like ball IS in conjunction with a plurality of metallic strips of different lengths carried at the interior of the cup I8 musical notes in succession may be sounded to produce a tune. This and other modifications will be apparent to those skilled in the art.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is as follows:
1. A carousel toy for children comprising a hemispherical body member, a cover body member, a. plurality of objects arranged about the peripheral area of the cover body member, a spring motor within the body member, a shaft projected through the body member and rotatably connected to said spring motor and a driving wheel carried by said shaft, the hemispherical body member and wheel being adapted for simultaneous contact with a plane support, the wheel being adapted to rotate the body member on its vertical axis.
2. A carousel toy for children comprising a hemispherical body member of sheet plastic, a cover for the body member, a plurality of objects mounted on the cover at its peripheral area, a
projecting wind-shaft extending from the spring j motor, a canopy supporting device removably connected to the shaft and adapted as a winding through the cover 2 is preferably squared so as to Of course, that post at its base area.
will be formed with a squared opening. This";-
the arrangement is readily understood. The post key therefor, a second shaft laterally projecting from the spring motor and driven thereby, a wheel carried by the last named shaft and adapted to rotate the body member on its vertical axis, and a sound-producing device thrown into action by the rotation of the wheel.
