Description
M. L. H. DELL March 14, 1950 JACK TOP Filed May 22, 1944 ATI'CIRN EYS Patented Mar. 14, 1950 "UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE JACK TOP Mirah L. H. Dell, Nicholls, Ga. Application May 22, 1944, Serial No. 536,776
The invention relates to a hydraulic lifting jack attachment, and more particularly to a lifting jack head. i
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a jack head of this character, wherein a push and pull action can be obtained through the use of a jack of standard construction, particularly where it is desired to move heavy objects, for example, in the pulling of a bottom shell plate up to an inner shell bottom, the head being mounted on the lift plunger or piston of the jack to have universal movement, to assure the alignment of the work in its placement.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a jack head of this character, wherein the construction thereof is such that the lift medium can be adjusted and regulated with dispatch, the head being of novel make-up, and is easily and readily applied to a jack for the purposes intended thereof.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a jack head of this character, wherein the construction of the same is such to make it safe and secure when pulling and pushing, the latter being even and uniform in the working of the jack.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a head of this character, which is simple in construction, thoroughly reliable and eflicient in operation, strong, durable, readily and easily handled, susceptible of proper adjustment, and inexpensive to manufacture and install.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists in the features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described in detail, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, which discloses the preferred embodiment of the invention,
Referring to the drawing in detail A designates generally a hydraulic jack of any standard construction, having as usual the lifting piston in operating in the ordinary manner within a cylinder H therefor, the latter being provided with a base l2, which has joined therewith the reinforc- 4 Claims- (Cl. 254-133) ing braces 13 exteriorly of the cylinder H. The piston Ii! reciprocates within the cylinder 11 through fluid action controlled in a well known manner, which is no part of the present invention.
At the uppermost end of the piston ill is a jack head constituting the present invention, which comprises a socketed lower portion l4 created by a circular rim formation IS, the uppermost portion of the piston l0 being snugly fitted into the socket in this portion M to have the rim formatio concentrically about the same.
Formed with and rising centrally. from this portion M is a ball-like male member l6 loosely fitting into a companion socketed female member l! of a universal coupling or joint, the latter being centrally of and depending from a cap piece l8 preferably of circular contour, which is thickened at the center portion thereof and gradually thinned out in the direction of its outer periphery for strength and durability. This piece l8 has swivel action on the male member l6 of the coupling or joint for self adjustment.
v The base l2 of the cylinder II of the jack A is superimposed upon spaced sills l9 when the said jack is in working position, and these sills [9 bridge an opening created in a flooring 2!], which opening is to be closed by a plate 2|, the flooring 20 being supported in this instance by girders 22, resting against an inner bottom formation 23 or the like. This plate 2! has formed therewith or built thereto in a circular course spaced eyes 24 to which are connected loosely a series of turnbuckle equipped pull members 25, each turn-- buckle being denoted at 26, and such members 25 are also loosely connected to the periphery of the piece l8 in spaced relation to each other. The members '25 downwardly diverge from this piece E8 in their working relation to the plate 2!.
In the working of the jack A it should be noted from Figure 2 of the drawing that the construction hereinbefore described effects a pulling action on a piece of work, the jack being maintained in a resting position in any suitable manner, and the piston iii of the jack exerts a pushing action on the head when the jack is in operation.
The members 25 can be lengthened and shortened as the occasion may require for the proper alignment of the work to be moved by the head under the action of the piston ii] of the hydraulic jack A.
In lieu of the plate 2! any other suitable pull medium may be employed in association with the jack head, and this is true with respect to the sake of brevity.
What is claimed is:
1. A lifting jack head attachment for a piston of a hydraulic lifting jack, comprising a male coupling part having a socketed lower portion for snugly fitting the upper portion of the piston, a female coupling part companion to the male part located centrally of and depending from and forming a cap piece for the piston, and pull means connected to the periphery of the cap piece to be disposed concentrically of the jack, a plate connected to said pull means beneath said piston.
2. A lifting jack head attachment for fitting a piston of a hydraulic lifting jack, comprising a male coupling part having a socketed lower portion for snugly fitting the upper portion of the piston, a female coupling part companion to the male part located centrally of and depending from and forming a cap piece for the piston, ,pull'means connected to the periphery of the cap pieceto be disposed concentrically of the lack, a plate connected to said pull means beneath said piston, and means for lengthening and shortening the pull means.
3.. A lifting jack head attachment for fitting a piston of a hydraulic lifting jack, comprising a male coupling part having a socketed lower portion for snugly fitting the upper portion of the 4 piston, a female coupling part companion to the male part located centrally of and depending from and forming a cap piece for the piston, pull means connected to the periphery of the cap piece to be disposed concentrically of the jack, a plate connected to said pull means beneath said piston, means for lengthening and shortening the pull means, and means for loosely connecting the pull means to the lift medium.
4. .A lifting jack head attachment for fitting a piston of a hydraulic lifting jack, comprising a male coupling part having a socketed lower portion for snugly fitting the upper portion of the piston, a female coupling part companion to the male part located centrally of and depending from and forming a cap piece for the piston,
pull means connected to the periphery of the cap piece to be disposed concentrically of the jack, a plate connected to said pull means beneath said piston, means for lengthening and shortening the pull means, means for loosely connecting the pull means to the lift medium, and means for securing the socketed lower portion of the male part to the piston of the jack.
