5' Claims.
' hull of a ship,
An object of theinvention. is to provide a unit of the above type having complete facilities for installation in the supporting structure. Another objectristo provide a unit of the above type which: may be. installed in a supporting structure, butwhich may be readily detached and transported to a different locality as desired.
Another. object is to provide an apartment house structure including a plurality of remqvable living units. 9
Various other objects. and advantages will be apparentas the nature of the invention is more fully disclosed.
Although the novel features which are characteristic of this invention are pointed out more particularly in the claims, the nature of the'in.--
vention will be better understood by; referring to the following description. taken inconnection with the accompanying drawing inwhich a.-specific embodiment thereof has been set forth for. purposes of illustration.
with. arts broken away to show the internal construction, of an apartment house structure incorporating a plurality of living units embody ing the present invention.
Referring to the drawing more in detail; an apartment. house I] is shown as provided with therein.
In the drawing the figure is a perspectiveview, mounted on each crane 2 and carry drums n steel girders i2 which form essentially a "skeleton structure having openings or cells adapted to receive the 'various'housing units IT. The apartment house is provided with-a permanent outside wall [3 and on two sides, such as on the. front.
andjback; is provided with openings. 14 which are normally closed by movable panels l5. The.
panels [5 are provided with eyes- Ill and are adapted to be raised about their upper edges and slid into openings l6 providedbetween the various sections. Thepanels l5 may, if desired, be
formed in sections and operated. in. a manner, similar to a lift door of standard construction.
Suitable rollers; (not shown). may be: provided to facilitate the operation of the various panels.
.The girders 12 form an open framework which isv so. constructed that a plurality of open cells junctionwith the movable panels l5 close the.
cells when the housing unit I] is removed.
Each housing unit Il forms a complete living:
unit including the various necessary rooms and.
facilities which are completely installed. The
units are provided. with a plurality .of rollers. l8
which are adapted to slid into horizontal channel members I!) secured to the girders l2 for inserting the units from the front and rear respec- Vertical channel members tively of the house. 2! are also providedwhich register withthe'horie zontal channel memberslll and'extend vertically past the various tiers of cells. The verticalchannel members 2i are provided near their lower ends with outside notches 22 through which the.
rollers it pass and are provided opposite each of the horizontalv channelmembers IS with registering notches (not shown) to permit the roll: ers to pass into the horizontal channel members.
Located .on-the roof of the house H' are a pair of cranes 24 which are rotatably mounted on a,
tion. The cranes 24 are shown as rotatable to extend over eitherth front wall or the back wall of the house for the insertion of the housing units Electrically operated winches 28 are which are wound steel cables29 which are of a size to lift the various housing units. The cables cable if desired, or a single winch may be provided for actuating all of the cables depending upon the weight of the various units.
The housing units l! are each provided with suitable outside windows 35 and doors (not shown) which, when the unit is installed, will,
be adjacent the doors 36. of the apartment house;
i The utilities of the housing units l7, such as water gasapower, etc, are connected by unions ll and plugs 42 to permanent insulations in the Windows 43' are provided in. the'walls l3 and in the. panels ill of the house apartment house.
and are locatedto register with. the windows. 35
"of. the. unit when the latter is in place.
In. the operation. of this system, the units I11 are installed in a vacant cell. in, the apartment house by first connectingthe hooks 32to; the eyes it of. the corresponding panel l5,.lifting the panel and sliding the same into the opening it to. leave,
an outside opening to receive the unit. The unit ll-is thenhoistedinto place by locating the, cranes. 24 over the cell space and attaching the hooks 52 of the cables 29 to the eyes 33 of the unit. The
unit is then lifted, the inside roller I8 passed through the notch 22 into the vertical channels 2|, and the unit hoisted until it is brought opposite the open cell. The unit is then moved inwardly by suitable means not shown. The rollers 18 pass from the vertical channels 2| into the horizontal channels 19. At suitable intervals during the insertion of the unit, the hooks 32 are released from the eyes 33. When the unit is in place, the utilities are connected to the unions 4| and plugs 42 and the panel i5 is lowered into place over the front of the unit.
When the unit is to be removed, the reverse operation takes place, the panel l5 first being raised, the unions 4! and plugs 42 disconnected, and the unit I? being slid outwardly in horizontal channels i9. When the unit has been moved sufiiciently to expose the eyes 33, the books 32 are inserted and a strain is put on the cables 29- to assist in the removal of the unit. The unit is then lowered and may be placed on a suitable trailer truck or other means for transporting the same to a different location. The panel i5 is then lowered into position to close the vacant space.
Each of the units may comprise complete living quarters or a plurality of complementary units may be used which may be located adjacent one another or across the hallway 38 of the building, in which case one unit may include a living room, dining room and kitchenette and the other unit may include bedrooms and bath.
The unit, after being placed on a trailer truck or the like for transportation, may be moved to an apartment structure in another location, or may be placed upon foundations to constitute a detached living unit, or if desired may be attached to a hull and connected to the utilities supply thereof.
Although a specific embodiment has been shown for purpose of illustration, it is to be understood that various changes and modifications may be made therein as will be readily apparent to a person skilled in the art. The invention is only. to be restricted in accordance with the scope of the followingclaims.
