NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES THOMPSON, or BALTIMORE, MARYLAND.
WINDOW.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 249,697, dated November 15, 1881.
To all whom tt may concern Be it known that I, JAMES THOMPSON, of Baltimore city, State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Windows; and I hereby declare the same to be fully, clearly, and exactly described as follows, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a perspective view, and Fig. 2 a central vertical sectional view, of a window enibodying my invention.
My said invention relates to the front or sidewalk windows of stores having stands for the display of wares; and it has for its object to provide a window of that class having a sliding removable stand adapted to be retracted upon suitable guide-rails, and aflord facility for arranging the goods upon the stand and give access to the glass for cleaning it.
In the drawings, A is the front pane of a sidewalk-window, and B is the platform upon which the goods and wares are arranged for display. It is mounted upon supports a a, which are mortised into bars a, in the ends of which latter are pivoted rollers b, that run on rails O. 'The rear 0 of the platform B is, by preference, faced with a mirror, and has a handle, E, whereby the entire device may be retracted within the store to dress the platform or afford access to the window. The part D is glazed, so as to give light to the interior of the store from without, and the top of the frame f is beveled, as shown, so as to fit closely against a bead, e,on the ceiling of the window-space.
The additional advantages of this construction are that it closes the window-space closely, and prevents in summer the entrance of flies Application filed October 10, 1881. (No model.)
and in winter the condensation and freezing of moisture on the front pane.
The device may readily be applied to the ordinary window-space at a trifling cost, and is a great convenience.
The platform is more tastefully dressed from the front, as is possible with my device, facility is afforded for removing any article which is fancied by a purchaser, and the window-space is practically sealed. The air of the interior being thus cut off from access to the windowspace, the condensation of moisture in winter is imperceptible, and the windows are never rendered opaque by ice from condensed moist ure.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- 1. A shop or store window having a retractible platform mounted upon rollers, in combination with a suitable railway or guide for directiug the motion of the platform and guiding it into place, as set forth.
2. In combination with the window and railway O, the platform mounted upon suitable supports and rollers, and .havinga backingarranged to close tightly against the ceiling and walls of the window-space, as set forth.
3. In combination with the window A and platform B, the supports a, rollers b, rails G, and backing c D, having handle E, and adapted to close the rear of the window-space, as set forth.
JAS. THOMPSON.
