PICKER STAFF P018 LooMs.
No. 249,276. Pat

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
u ASEL M. `WADE, OF LAWRENCE, MASSACHUSETTS.
PICKER-STAFF FO R LOOMS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 249,276, dated November 8, 1881. Application filed September 15, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that LAsEL M. WADE, of `Lawrence, of the county ot' Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvementin Picker-Staffs for Looms and I do herebydeclare the same to be described in the following specification and represented in the accompanying drawings, of which- Figure 1 is a top view, Fig. 2 a side elevation, Fig. 3 a front view, Fig. 4 a vertical section, and Fig. 5 a transverse or horizontal section, of a picker-staff of my invention, the 'nature of which is defined by the claims hereinafter set forth.
rlhe staff, as hereinafter described, instead of' being made ot' wood throughout its length, is a metallic tube of proper form in transverse section, and re-enforced with Wood or other suitable material both in its upper and lower parts. It is also chanibered at top to receive a picker. Furthermore, it has recessed jaws for holding. the front lips or lift ot' the picker. It is also provided with a spring-catch to hold the picker in place. The object of making it of metal and re-enlb'rcing it in the manner specified is to obviate sundry difcnlties incident to the wooden staff, whose picker is liable to become splinter-ed while in use and to have parts of it detached and thrown into the warps, to the detriment of the weavin g.
ln the drawings, A denotes the metallic tnbular part of the staff', and B and Gk its re-euforces, of wood or other proper material. The re-enforce, at the lower part ot' the staff', is a core of wood, litting suoli lower part to a sufcient altitude, and to extend from or below it, it' necessary, as represented. The upper reenforce is also a core of wood or other suitable material, and it may be recessed, as shown, to aid informing in the upper part of the statt a chamber, a., for the reception of the picker D, composed ofa series of lifts or sections, b c o, of leather or rawhide, cemented or suitably connected, the first or outer lift being wider than the others, and received within two recessed jaws, d d, extending from the upper part of the staff, and formed in manner as represented, they being elastic, if preferable.
Within the upper re-enforce is the springcatch E, which, after the picker may have been inserted in the staff, springs forward over such picker and'holdsit in place therein.
rlhe upper re-enforce I usually extend down within the tubular portion A to or a little be yond the part thereof whichstrikes against the lay at the terminus of each throw of the staff, such being to prevent the metal from being bent in. The material used for forming the tubular part A may be sheet brass, iron, or steel, preference being given to the latter. A picker-staff so made not only cau be constructed as light it' not lighter than a wooden staff` of like size, but be much stronger, and, besides, be better in other respects.
The re-cnf'orces are to be secured in the tubular part by rivets or other suitablemeans.
viz:
1. As a new or improved manufacture, a picker-staff composed of a metallic tube, A, and of re-enforces B C, as described, arranged therein, substantially asset forth.
2. A picker-staff consisting of a metallic tube, A, and re-enforces B C, arranged in it (the said tube) as described, and having in its upper part a chamber or recess to receive and support a picker, as set forth. Y
3. A picker-staff composed of a metallic tube and re-enforces, ns described, arranged in it as set forth, and having in its upper part a chamber for receiving the picker, and recessed jaws for receiving and supporting the i'ront lift of suoli picker, all being substantially as set forth. v
4. A pickerstaff composed of a metallic tube and re-enforces, as described, and chambered in` its upper part to receive a picker, and there provided with a spring-catch for holdingthe picker in place in thechamber, all being substantially as shown and described.
Witnesses: ASEL M. WADE.
