LEVI K. BRYANT, OF LAIVRENCE, MASSACHUSETTS.
PlCKER-STICK FOR LOOMS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 415,810, dated November 26, 1889.
Application filed September 9, 1889, Serial No. 323,408- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEVI KFBRYANT, a citi-' zen of the United States, residing at Lawrence, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Picker-Sticks for Looms, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification.
In looms the picker-sticks after being in use a very short time become worn at their upper ends, where they pass through the pickers, and have constantly to be replaced by new sticks.
Now, the object of my invention is to overcome this difficulty; and it consists in forming the 'picker-stick in two parts, a lower stout portion that is attached to the loomframe and a small upper portion that passes through the picker, the two being connected together by a strap or band secured to the stout portion and into which the upper portion is slipped, as hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a side view of a pickerstick embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a rear or back view of the same. Fig. 3 is a slde view of the main portion. Fig.4 is a side view of the upper or removable portion. Fig. 5 is a section taken on line w a: of Fig. 1, and Fig. 6 is a top or plan view of Fig. 3.
A represents the main or permanent portion of the picker-stick, which is provided near its lower end with the usual hole a for attaching it to the loom-frame. The upper portion is thinned down, as shown, to the thickness of an ordinary picker-stick, and has its inner'face from the upper end I) to the point a made on a slight incline or taper.
B is a strap or band secured to the upper end of the piece Aby means of rivets, as shown.
0 is a short stick that works in the picker, and is at its lower end formed with an in-- cline to correspond to the incline on the upper end of the portion A.
To secure the two sticks together, the lower end of the portion 0 is inserted in the loop or strap B, and by reason of the two inclined surfaces coming into contact with each other it is wedged in and securely held between the strap B and the upper end of the portion A. When the portion 0 becomes worn, it can be readily knocked out by striking on its lower end, when it can be replaced by a new piece.
It will be seen that instead of having to replace the whole stick when worn the only portion that has to be replaced is the small piece 0, the main portion A lasting for an indefinite period. Thus the cost is reduced to a minimum, besides a great saving in time, which is now required to replace the wornout stick by a new one.
Although I have shown and prefer to connect the two pieces together by means of a strap, as shown, I do not confine myself to that means of connecting them, as they might be bolted or otherwise fastened together.
What I claim as my invention is 1. A picker-stick made in two parts, whereby the upper or wearing portion can be replaced when worn out, substantially as set forth.
2. A picker-stick consisting of a main portion A and an upper or wearing portion 0, secured together by a strap B, substantially as shown and described.
3. A picker-stick consisting of a main portion A, adapted to be secured to the loomframe and provided at its upper end with a bevel or inclined surface, as from b to c, a strap B, secured thereto, and a wearing portion 0, the lower end of which has a bevel or inclined surface to correspond to the inclined surface on the main portion A, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification, in the presence of two subscribingwitnesses, on this 29th day of August, A. D. 1889.
LEVI K. BRYANT.
