UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES IV. HOLBROOK, 2D, OF PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND.
LOOM-PICKEI/R.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 532,558, dated January 15, 1895.
Application filedSeptember 28,1894. Serial No. 524,396- (No model.)
being had to the accompanying drawings,
makingapart of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective View of a rawhide loom-picker constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same. Fig. 3 is a transverse section of the same on the line 3. 3. of Fig. 1.
In raw-hide loom-pickers as heretofore constructed, considerable difficulty has been ex-- perienced on account of their liability to become cracked or split under the hard wear and blows to which they are subjected, especially when the loom is running at a very high speed. To overcome this difficulty and to greatly increase the strength and durability of loom-pickers of this description, is the object of my invention, which consists in a loom-picker embodying certain novel features of construction as hereinafter set forth, and specifically pointed out in the claim. I
In the said drawings A represents the body or shank of a loom-picker, one end of which is enlarged to form the rod-holder B, which is provided at its center with a rod-hole a. Over the opposite end a of the shank A is fitted a head-cap D into which the shank extends as shown, the end 0 and the cap D, which embraces it and is secured thereto by rivets d in the usual manner, constituting the head of the picker which contacts with the point or beak of the shuttle.
The body A is composed of an outer layer or thickness f of-raw-hide folded or doubled over as shown and having an inner raw-hide fillingg composed of any'desired numberbf pieces, and between said layers 'or pieces f, g, is interposed a piece of thick woven-fabric h preferably canvas or heavy cotton duck, the several layers or thicknesses of raw-hide and woven-fabric being securely fastened together by rivets i.
In constructing the picker, I take a piece or strip of wet raw-hide of suitable shape or size to form the outside layer or thickness f and lay upon it the woven-fabric h which is preferably doubled as shown in Fig. 3 in such manner as to cause the folded edges 10 to lie flush with the adjacent edges of the raw-hide or preferably extend a little beyond the same as shown in Figs. 1 and 3. The filling g is then laid in place and the raw-hide and canvas are then doubled over a spindle to form the rod-hole a, after which the rivet holes are punched and the rivets inserted. The picker is then removed from the spindle and allowed to dry, after which the operation of riveting is completed. The head-cap D which is preferably composed of a solid piece of raw-hide of single thickness throughout is then applied in the usual manner and secured in place by the rivets d. 1
By thus interposing a piece of woven-fabric between the layers of raw-hide as above described the picker is rendered much stronger and more durable, as the woven-fabric on account of its toughness and elasticity will hold the layers of raw-hide together in. such manner asto effectually prevent the splitting or also enable the picker to betterresist the blows of the picker-stick and the concussion produced by the contact of the picker with. the end of the loom-box. Furthermore the extension of the doubled or folded edges 10 of the woven-fabric beyond the edges of the raw-hide as shown in Fig. 3 forms elastic cushions or buffers which relieve the picker of the sudden shocks to which it is subjected from contact with the picker-stick and loombox and reduces the wear to a minimum, thus particularly adapting the picker for use in looms which are run at a very high speed as is now customary.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A raw-hide loom-picker, having a filling of woven fabric interposed between the layers of raw-hide, said filling having doubled-edges extending beyond the edges of the raw-hide to form elastic cushions or buffers, substantially as set forth.
Witness my hand this 24th day of September, A. D. 1894.
CHARLES .W. HOLBROOK, 2D.
