My present invention is a novel and improved --lug strap particularly employing a plug adjust arrangement for adjustment for length oftheentire lug strap at the plug or heel .end.
Heretofore, in theuse .of lug straps for trans.- mitting power to apickerstick in standard types of looms, it'has been customary to form the lug strap construction of generally U-shapedcontour and, preferably, with .aplug or block permanently fitted at the heel .or bottom .of the U formation, .the extending arms being provided near their open ends with slots .to, allowfor adjustment -of length desired when attaching. theelug. strap .onto the actuating link 'oroperative part of the loom which gave the lug strap its impetus to throw the picker stick across "the loo'rn'during the weaving operation.
Such prior constructionswere objectionable in various features. The provision e; the slots for adjustment of length at the'open end of the arms caused considerable difiicultyin effecting the ad :iustm nt a desired 29 .1 t toi as t es slo were wii i nilie rea 9 nd fl t-1 acc s that 9 .difii i also. c nr arla i I ue sw rk; t decreasin arse-e t... as pi tween the power linkoperating the lug strap and the face of the plug or block against which the picker stick would strike. i
' A further prior .difiiculty was that occasioned by the customary riveting of the plug at the heel of the U-shaped arms, the plug of such prior constructions being rigidly attached, and, when worn down to the first rivet rendered the entire lug strap useless.
In my present improved and adjustable lug strap I provide a more convenient and quickly accessible construction for the lengthwise adjustment, said adjustment means being at the plug end or heel of the lugstrap which ordinarily extends free of the rest of the machine and out into the passageway or alley where a bank of looms are installed. Furthermore, my present invention provides quickly adjustable means to compensate for wear on the face of the plug as well as stretch or wear on the extending arms where the bolt is attached to the power link.
A still further feature and advantage of the present construction consists in a. longer and larger mass of the plug material allowing for wear of the striking face of the plug on the lug strap.
By my present construction I utilize a single square .or hexagonal bolt extending thru a lug "strap .tohold the same' rigid and in proper relation to the side arms interlocking the plug and side arms into firm positionat anylengthwise ad dusted position of the plugand arms. A rurtherlnovel feature of mypresent adjust- -.able.lug strap is that I may streamline, taper, or otherwise form the side arms so as to imparta predetermined whipj spring, and drive to the Eth c shuttle.
' Heretoiore-it has been considered essential to rely on the resilience or elasticity of the .picker stick to predetermine whip and spring in its lugstrap and, hence, through thepicker stick to operation on the shuttle of a loom, but by my present invention Imay utilize the arms of the lug strap-itself .eitheralone or in cooperation with the form, structure, and resiliency of the picker stick to efiectively provide and, preferably, predetermine the desiredw-hipjsprin'g, and resiliency of the sliuttleethrowing operation.
-I'may fo-rm-ni'ylug strap arms and plug of any suitable material. Thus the arms maybe of wood, synthetic plastic, canvas, leather, .rubbenlmetal, bra combination otthe same, and such material Lmay-Be formed .eitheras a substantial solid mass,
.or laminated where wood :is employed, or inter,- rolled where canvas is used. The plug may be also .of any suitable material as a block of wood, leather, rubber, plastic which may be enclosed lid-rubber .or canvas-if'desired, or .may be of laminated layers or wood; leather, rubber, .or synthetic plasticlmaterial. T i
Referring to the drawings:
Fig. 1 is a plan view partly in cross-section illustrating my novel and improved adjustable plug lug strap;
Fig. 2 is a side view;
Fig. 3 is a side view partly in cross-section illustrating streamlined and tapered arms of interrolled canvas;
Fig. 4 is a cross-sectional view on the line 4-4 of Fig. 1, and
Fig. 5 is a view on the line 5-5 of Fig. 1 with the adjacent arm removed.
Fig. 6 is a perspective view of a modified form of washer.
Referring to the drawings, a pair of side arms I and 2, herein shown of wood or synthetic plastic material, are provided with an intermediate plug 3 formed of laminated wear-resisting material, preferably wooden layers impregnated with synthetic plastic to strengthen, preserve, and unite the same as well as giving'them a wear-resisting surface particularly on the inner edge 5 of the aesascs 3 plug, which is herein illustrated as slightly convex, as is usual. The arms I and 2 are provided with bolt-receiving holes 6 and I at the open ends of the arms; and at the opposite ends lengthwise slots 8 and 8 are formed centrally in the arms I and 2, respectively, to allow for lengthwise adjustment of the plug 3. The plug 3 is fitted with a square, hexagonal, or'oval bolt I thru a correspondingly formed bolt sldewise of the plug 3 and it is thus adapted to hold the plug 3 firmly, and rigidly in position when the ends of the bolt" I0, which are rounded'and threaded for the pur-' V V to the squared bolt I0 and lock nuts l2.
pose as indicated at H, are each fitte'd with nuts I2 bearing against a washer I4 which spans the openings 8 and 9, and thus constitute means to interlock the plug 3 and arms I and 2 when the" To efiect lengthwise,
nuts l2--I2 are tightened. adjustment relatively between the plug 3 and arms I and 2, the nuts I2--I2 are loosened and the plug shifted, the shank of each end of the bolt II] traversing the slots 8 and 9 respectively.
In order to more fully interlock the plug 3 and arms I and 2, I Provide a pronged washer I 5 having a square opening in the center, as best shown at I6, Fig. 5, so that the same is rigid on the bolt Ill and, hence, firmly fixed on the plug 5, this washer having a plurality of prongs extending therefrom and adapted to impinge .into or to be buried slightly in the adjacent side face of the arm I or 2, respectively, asshown.
This construction adds further to maintain the plug and arms in proper position in addition to the squared shank of the bolt W, as will be'readily appreciated. c 1
In Fig. 3, I have illustrated a tapered and streamlined form of arms 2! and 22 formed of interrolled canvas with the single slots 23 and 24 at one end to receivea bolt which acts as a pivot between the lug and power link connecting'the same and with lengthwise adjusting slots 25 and 26, respectively, at the opposite end to receive the squared or non-rotating bolt in with its fastening means. V
In this form I have also illustrated a tapered and streamlined form which may be effective to predetermine'the whip and spring in the lug strap itself, although the material of the lug strap, being properly and scientifically constructed to provide whip and spring in the action of the lug strap on the picker stick, can be secured in any desired way by; the strength and resiliency of the material employed.
As shown in Fig. 6, I have illustrated a modified form of locking and pronged washer 30 to aid in interlocking the plug 5 to the arms I and 2 or 2I and 22. For this purpose, the washer 30 has a squared opening in the center 3|, a plurality of prongs 32 similar to the construction of the washer I5 already described but with the body or plate portion of the washer an extended sufficiently to have edge flanges 33 turned up therefrom in position to fit over and engage the outside edges of the arms at each side. Thus, these flanges 33 still further aid in holding the -arms and plug rigidly in alignment in addition 'I claim: r A lug strap of the kind described, having a pair of longitudinally extending arms of canvas,
- wood, plastic, or the like non-metallic material,
and a plug formed of a plurality of layers of yieldable material with centrally arranged recesses thru each layer in alignment and noncircular in cross-section, both said arms and plug being separable from each other, means to assemble said arms and plug in operative position to constitute a lug strap in a loom, in combination with fastening means to hold said plug and non-metallic arms in alignment when assembled as a lug strap, said fastening means comprising a non-rotatablebolt registering with the nonrotatable openings thru said plug layers, and a pair of washers fitted to the'bolt in non-rotatable engagement therewith between the sides of the plug and the arms, said washers having upstanding fianges toengage the opposite edges of adjacent arms and a plurality of upstanding points to penetrate said arms.
