.PICKER STICK CONNECTION 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 I INVENTOR Jbs epic Vwwre.
ATTORNEY Patented Apr. 5, 1949 UITED STATES TENT FFICE 6 Claims.
My invention relates to looms and more particularly to means whereby the picker stick may be adjusted for regulating the power and stroke thereof for driving the shuttle.
While I am aware that the prior art discloses various devices and adjustments for regulating the power and stroke of the picker stick, for instance, United States Patents Nos. 434,988; 1,392,126; 1,481,195 and 1,579,078, these devices or mechanisms are usually of a somewhat complicated construction and necessitate substantial modification of standard loom parts in order to apply or attach them to looms already in use. Furthermore, when incorporated as part of the initial or standard construction of looms, they materially increase the production costs thereof.
My invention overcomes the foregoing difliculties and disadvantages, it being one of the objects thereof to provide means whereby the picker stick may be readily adjustable relative to the operating crank arm and which means is simple in construction, durable in use, eflicient in operation, economical in manufacture, and lends itself to ready application of looms already in use without substantially modifying the latter.
With the above and other objects in view, as will hereinafter appear, the invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter set forth and illustrated in the accompanying drawings from which the several features of the invention and the advantages attained thereby will be readily understood by those skilled in the art.
Referring to the drawings wherein like reference characters designate like parts throughout the several views:
Figure l is a perspective view of my invention as attached to the associated operating parts of a loom.
Figure 2 is a side elevation thereof.
Figure 3 is an end elevation.
Figure 4 is a sectional view taken on the line 4-4 of Figure 1.
Figure 5 is a perspective view illustrating a modification in the arrangement of certain components.
Figure 6 is a side elevation of the modification.
Figure 7 is an end elevation of the modified arrangement disclosed in Figures 5 and 6.
Figure 8 is a sectional view taken on the line 8-8 of Figure 5.
In practicing my invention, as illustrated in Figures 1 to 4- of the drawings, I employ a picker stick ID of ordinary construction having its upper end equipped with the usual shuttle engaging pad or member l l and its lower end pivoted, as at l2, to a rocker-iron it carried by the loom. the latter being equipped with the usual crank arm M for operating th stick Ill.
The crank arm I4 is provided with an upper outwardly curved end section l5 attached to one end of an operating bar or arm l6 formed with an opening H. The end section i5 is formed with an opening it through which extends a bolt is provided with a nut 293. The bolt l'9 also extends through the opening ll in the operating bar or arm l6 and constitutes a pivot permitting relative movement of the arm l4 and bar 16. The opposite end of the bar It is formed with a plurality of openings 2| and is embraced by coincident end sections of a pair of elongated plates or members 22, one of said end sections having fixed thereto a pivot pin 23 which extends through one of the openings 2| and into a similar opening formed in the coincident end section of the opposite plate whereby to form a pivotable connection between the bar l6 and the plates 22.
The opposite end sections of the plates 22 embrace the side faces of the picker stick l8 and are formed with elongated registering slots 24 through which extends a clamping bolt 25 provided with a nut 26. The bolt 25 extends through an opening 21 formed in the stick I!) superjacent the rocker-iron l3 and, when the nut 26 is tightened, serves to clamp the plates 22 to the stick Ill and thus establishes a fixed connection between the plates and stick.
Obviously, operating of the crank arm M will impart reciprocating motion to the picker stick for projecting or driving the shuttle across the lay of the loom in the usual manner, it being understood that the plates 22 pivot relative to the bar it during this operation. Should it be desired to regulate the stroke and power of the stick for driving th shuttle, the nut 25 is loosened and the plates 22 adjusted relative to the picker stick I0 and bar 16 to effect the desired length of the stroke, as illustrated in dotted and full lines in Figure 2 of the drawings, whereupon the nut 26 is again tightened to clamp the plates in fixed relation to the stick. In the event that a relatively large adjustment is required to obtain the desired stroke of the picker stick, the pivot 23 may be transposed from one of the openings M to another,
As illustrated in Figures 6 to 8 of the drawings, the plates 22 may be endwisely reversed with the pivot pin 23 extending through the opening 21 of the stick to form pivotable connection therewith while the bolt l9 extends through one of the openings 2| of the bar [6 to establish a fixed connection between the bar and the plates during operation of the stick. Obviously, by adjusting the plates relative to the bar and transposing the bolt 19 from one to another of the openings 2|, the stroke of the picker stick may be varied as desired.
Without further elaboration, the foregoing will so fully explain the invention that others may, by applying current knowledge, readily adapt the same for use under various conditions of service. Moreover, it is not indispensable that all the features of the invention be used conjointly since they may be employed advantageously in various combinations and subcombinations.
It is obvious that the invention is not confined to the herein described use therefore as it may be utilized for any purpose to which it is adaptable. It is therefore to be understood that the invention is not limited to the specific construction as illustrated and described, as the same is only illustrative of the principles involved which are capable of extended application in various forms, and the invention comprehends all construction within the scope of the appended claims.
