A. LILJA WHISTLE CONTROLLING ATTACHMENT Filed July 9, 192.5
INVENTOR A. L17
ATTORNEY Patented May 5, 1925.
ALEXANDER LILJA, 0F NOTI, QREGON.
WHISTLE-CQNTROLLING ATTACHMENT.
Application filed July 9.
To 117/ trim/n i! may concern:
ie it known that I, ALEXANDER IaLJA, a citizen of the I nited States, residing at Noti, in the county of Lane and State of Oregon, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in \Yhistlc-Controlling Attachments, oi which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to whistle controlling devices for use, more especially. with log-hauling or donkey engines.
In logging operations the usual practice is to have, the whistle-valve operating arm connected to a pull line or wire extending into the woods to enable an operator there, sounding the whistle for signalling the engineer to start or stop the winding drum of the log-hauling cable.
histle operating devices of this characte are frequently broken or disarranged by trees, branches, etc., falling on the controlling line which results in accidents. injury to the equipment. and other troubles.
With these and other conditions in view my invention has for its object to provide devices interposed between the pull wire and the whistle and through the medium of which the whistle is actuated and the whistle and its connections with the engine are safeguarded from injury.
A further object is to provide means whereby quick and sharp pulls may be imparted to the valve arm instead of the slower applications effected by other appliances.
Still other objects and advantages of the invention will appear in the following specitication.
The invention consists in the novel construction. adaptation and combination of parts hereinafter described and clainied.
In the accompanying drawing,
Figure I is an elevational view of a. portion of the boiler of a donkey engine, the engine whistle and whistle controlling devices embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the whistle contrcdling devices to a larger scale than in Fig.1.
In said drawing the reference numeral 5 designates a donkey engine boiler. and G is a. whistle operativcly connected thereto. T de-ignates the whistle alvc which is normally held in its closed position by means & a spring (not shown) and is moved into its open position by means of an arm 8 secured to the stem of the valve to render the whi tle operative.
Serial No. 650.284.
According to the present invention ia stead of connecting the operating line 9 directly to the valve arm 8, as heretofore. I connect said line 9 to an end of a drag bar 11. his drag-bar is mounted for longitudinai reciprocating movements in guide elements 12 and 13 ot a frame it which is secured by means oi bolts l t to a rigid support such as the root 15 ot the house provided for the associated engine.
At the opposite end from its connection with the operating line 9. said bar is connected by a pivot pin 10 with a lever ii which is pivotally connected by a fulcrum pin in to a log element 15 ot the frame 1 t.
The lever '1 is connected. as shown, by a wire 20, or other suitable tlexibie connection with the valve-stem arm 8.
21 represents a spring provided on the drag bar 11 between the trame guide 12 and a set collar 22 which is provided on said bar. said collar being emrageable against the t'rame guide 1? which acts as a stop whereby the spring 21 serves to yieldingly hold the lever 17 in its normal full line position corresponding to the closed position of the whistle valve. The dotted line position 17 of said lever represents the same in its retracted position which corresponds with the position of the valve to sound the whistle.
The throw or movement ot the lever 17 is regulated by an adjusting stop screw :2 provided in a threaded hole in the guide t acting in cooperation of the set collar 22 with respect to the guide 113.
In operation a pull applied to the line 9 in the direction of arrows in the respective views acts through the medium of the dragbar ll. and lever 17 to draw the latter from its full line position to that in which it is indicated by dotted lines ii to eltec the blowing of the whistle.
In such operation the spring 21 contracted and upon the operator releas ng the pull line, said spring acts to return the dr" e1 bar into the position in which it is ilh! trated together with the lever 11' into full line position. The set collar 213 is lo cated to limit the swing of the lever 11' in one direction and the stop screw 2 .'-tl\t to limit the swing of the lever in the opposite direction.
By means of such devices the whi--tle and its valve are sa'teguarihal tron! injury by an; violent puli imparted to the pull line f The spring 21 serves to relieve the whi tle mechanism from stresses due to the weight of the pull line and ensures a rapid closing of the whistle valve to produce a sharp blast.
The frame 14 is advantageously provided with an apertured post element 2 t which serves as a guide or fair leader for the pull-line 9 with respect to the dragbar 11.
The preferred construction of the invention and the operation thereof will, it is thought, be understood from the foregoing description.
I do not limit myself to the specific con struction shown as changes may be made within the scope of the following claims.
hat I claim, is,--
1. A whistle control attachment embodying a whistle valve actuating lever, a guide element, means receivable in the guide element and connected with the actuating lever for moving the same, a combination adjusting and stop member carried by the guide element and adapted to intercept the lever at apredetermined point in its path of travel, and a combination adjust ing and stop member carried by the means for moving the lever for regulating the movement of said means, said adjusting and stop members being disposed for independent and relatively parallel movement along a line defined by the longitudinal axis of the lever moving means.
2. A whistle control attachment embodying a whistle valve actuating lever, a guide element, a drag bar receivable in the guide element and connected with the actuating lever for moving the same, a combination adjusting and stop screw carried by the guide element and adapted to intercept the lever at a predetermined point in one of the sectors of its path of travel, and a combination adjusting and stop collar carried by the drag bar and adapted to abut against the guide member to limit the movement of the lever at a predetermined point in another sector of its path of travel, said adjusting screw and stop collar being disposed for independent and relatively parallel movement. along a line defined by the longitudinal axis of the drag bar.
3. A whistle control attachment embody-- ing a whistle valve actuating lever, an elongated support for the lever, a plurality of aligned, spaced guide elements formed on the support, a drag bar receivable in certain of said guide elements and connected with the actuating lever for reciprocation parallel with the longitudinal axis of the support and tangentially to the arc of rotation of the lever, a combination adjusting and stop member carried by one ot the guide elements and adapted to intercept the lever at a predetcrmincd point in its path ot travei. and a combination adjusting and stop member carried by the drag bar, said adjusting and stop members being disposed for independent and relatively parallel movement along y a line defined by the long tudinal axis of the drag bar.
Signed at Noti, Oregon, this 25 day oi June, 1923.
